TECHNICAL SUMMARY SHEET L-arginine/L-ornithine Complex (VL409) Indications L-arginine/L-ornithine has the following benefits: Promotes healthy circulation

n Provides antioxidant protection May aid in muscle growth / anabolism May hold immunomodulatory effects L-arginine Background and Application L-arginine is considered a conditionally essential amino acid. Typically the body manufactures Larginine as needed; however in times of stress, including trauma, burns, and sepsis, the amino acid becomes essential. Food sources of L-arginine include plant and animal proteins, vegetable juice and fermented foods. Soy protein offers more L-arginine than animal protein. 1 The small intestine absorbs L-arginine ingested and is actively transported to the enterocytes or liver via the portal vein. Mechanisms of Action L-ornithine acts as a precursor to L-arginine, which is made in the kidney. L-arginine is involved in protein synthesis, detoxifying ammonia (normally formed during protein catabolism), and as a precursor for nitric oxide and creatine. Nitric oxide (NO) acts as a vasodilator in the circulatory system. It inhibits platelet aggregation and synthesis of reactive oxygen species.1 Although L-ornithine functions as a precursor to L-arginine, in some situations L-arginine produces L-ornithine. Ornithine shares the thymotrophic, immunostimulatory and secretagogue effects of arginine and these two amino acids share the same cellular mechanism of action.2 Research Summaries Cardiovascular Effects It has been proposed that supplemental L-arginine may help in treating and preventing heart disease. A review by researchers at Stanford University stated a wide array of cardiovascular disorder characterized by endothelial dysfunction are reversible by Larginine. 3 Nagaya, et al reported that oral supplementation of L-arginine showed positive results on the hemodynamics and exercise capacity

in patients with precapillary pulmonary hypertension, and also in those with congestive heart failure5. Another cited supplemental L-arginine as inducing apoptosis of macrophages in intimal lesions and regression of atheroma6. Additionally, L-arginine was shown to prevent xanthoma formation in mice supplemented with L-arginine and fed a high cholesterol diet7. L-arginine has shown in studies to hold antioxidant activity against LDL oxidation, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide anions. Muscle Anabolism High doses of L-arginine have shown to promote growth hormone, and another study reported the same effect for L-ornithine1. Growth hormone promotes lean body mass anabolism. Effects on Immune Health & Wound Healing One study showed that supplemental L-arginine improved T-lymphocyte function and lowered AGE formation in diabetic rats4. Another reported that arginine supplementation can partially reverse impaired NO synthesis in diabetic wound complications. Our Product Our product contains 500 mg of L-arginine and 250 mg of L-ornithine in a vegetarian capsule. Dosage Typical doses for cardiovascular health range from 6 to 21 grams daily of L-arginine. For L-ornithine, doses from 500 mg to 2 grams have been used. Specifications Product Name: Label Claim: How Supplied: Drop Count: Product Code: References
