WOW! Just LOOk at us NOW!

Open Door has been taking great strides to improve accessibility to the clients served. Adaptive equipment is very expensive; however, over time with the use of grants, donations, and monetary contributions we have been able to improve accessibility greatly. All we can say is, WOW! Look at us now! A few of our improvements include heated entrance ramps for several of our group homes, which allow clients to enter and exit their homes free of snow and ice. This makes it much safer for those who are unsteady on their feet. Also, our newest homes have extremely large restrooms, which greatly increases independence for those with mobility issues. One home has a mechanical track lift system that enables an individual with more physical challenges to be transferred to the commode and even be lowered into a nice leisurely bath. Wow! Both of our workshops have electronic doors so those individuals using walkers and wheelchairs can enter the buildings without the assistance of others. This is especially nice, hands and behinds are no longer challenged by a door as they are cleared to enter the building. The East Workshop has really been heating up Open Door with its new technology! A heated drive has been installed, clearing the drive of ice and snow so when the van drives in for transportation, the lift is clear to land on safe level payment! Oversized restrooms is another WOW feature of the East Workshop. They are designed with privacy walls rather than doors for an entrance. The clients can even stop for a drink of water on the way in using the handicap accessible drinking fountains located in the hallway. Our biggest WOW in the East Building is five re-tractable tables. They suspend

from the ceiling when not in use, allowing for more multi-purpose programming. Now you see it, now you dont! These amazing tables lower to almost any height. As with people, wheelchairs and footrests come in all different sizes and shapes. Now everyone can sit at the table comfortably. As the needs of individuals we serve arise, more equipment will be installed so we can best serve our clients. All we can say is WOW! Look at us now! This could not have been possible without the help of the many supporters of Open Door. Thank you!

Can I Quote You?

What is your favorite new WOW?
Paula H: I have the mechanical track in my bedroom but I havent had to use it yet. Im glad its ready just in case! I really like the tables at work. I can get right up to them without my footrests getting stuck. Roger: I like the washrooms. I can find my way around really easy. Scott H: I can move around myself much better. Rodney S: I get dropped off much closer to the door than before. Pat S. I like the tables, down when we are eating and up for more room when we are having a party. Jason M: I like the new vacuum cleaner. I can use it when staff is with me; I look like a Ghost Buster! Marty D: I like the lift system the best. Staff hooks me up in my sling and away I go. Sometimes to bed, the shower or the bathroom. Susan E: Everything is really groovy! When the Christmas carolers came, we put all the tables up and there was plenty of room for everyone!

In House Activities
For the last few months, Open Door has initiated a new program. Just about everyone has heard about Open Doors extensive activities program, which allows consumers to sign up for a multitude of activities in the community every month. Recently, weve decided to concentrate on fun activities within the homes, especially during the winter months where getting out and about can be difficult and unpopular. So, that is how Open Doors In House Activities Program was born. Case workers meet with the consumers monthly in their homes to develop a calendar of activities that can be done within the home. This program has turned out to be very popular. We recently had a combined home celebration for Jason M.s birthday, movie night with snacks, and holiday cookie decorating. Jasons birthday was a blast! Jason, who got to choose the menu for his birthday dinner, chose a very interesting combo of tacos and egg rolls with Spanish rice. The traditional birthday cake was replaced with a strawberry cheesecake. Add birthday presents, and you have a recipe for fun. Movie night at Pine house was a laid back and relaxing activity. Lounging on the sofa in your PJs with a bowl of popcorn and pretzels watching a movie.what could be better? Ash house baked holiday cookies and decorated them. They plan to take the decorated cookies and give each group home a plate. We also have a neighbor who gave the Ash house a plate of holiday goodies. This neighbor will be receiving a plate of cookies too. So not only are consumers having fun, but theyre fostering relationships in the community. With the addition of the In House activities, the consumers are offered the opportunity to enjoy their home, friends and fun. Now that is a combination that cant be beat.

Holiday Happenings
The Holiday Season is a time of anticipation and excitement for the consumers at Open Door. Plans for shopping, special activities, visits with family and PARTIES are in full swing by early November. This year Open Door was fortunate to be celebrating the First Christmas at three new group homes. The season officially kicks off with the annual Thanksgiving dinner for all the residential consumers. This years gathering was held at the new Developmental Training Workshop, with nearly 80 consumers and staff enjoying a delicious turkey dinner with all the fixings. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to get together and relax before the holiday bustle began. Decorating the homes for the Christmas season was in full swing starting Thanksgiving weekend. The homes had a tree decorating contest, with the winning house receiving a pizza party. One of our consumers who lives independently in the community spent several hours each day decorating his yard with hundreds of lights. And speaking of light shows, the trip to Lehnertz Drive in Aurora is so popular that two trips had to be scheduled this year! The consumers also had the opportunity to attend many cultural events including the plays A Christmas Carol, Babes In Toyland, and The Nutcracker at the Paramount Theater. Musical activities included the Waubonsee College Steel Band concert, Christmas caroling at local nursing homes and another annual favorite Christmas caroling with Dr. Csiszer and staff. Crafting is a popular activity all year round; however, this Christmas season our crafty crew was really inspired. Open Door participated in Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo by making ornaments and then going and decorating a tree at the zoo. Some consumers wanted to make their gifts this year, so several trips to the craft store and a special Stuff n Fluff workshop were scheduled. Beautiful beaded items, fleece blankets, stuffed animals and latch hook pillows were waiting under the tree for some special recipients. Another eagerly anticipated event is the Annual Parents Christmas party. This years party was initially scheduled for December 1, and we all remember what we woke up to that morning! While there was disappointment that the party had to be cancelled, the snowbound consumers spent that day marveling over the Winter Wonderland. One group decided to make cookies, which soon became another popular activity in the homes. The Ash group spent several of the following weekends baking up a storm and presented several surprised staff and neighbors with tins of delicious cookies. The Parents party was rescheduled for December 15 and the consumers and their families enjoyed an evening of pizza, sweets and dancing. (Thanks to all the parents and friends who make this party possible each year!) The week before Christmas found the consumers doing last minute shopping, wrapping presents and having more parties in their homes and at the workshops. Several consumers went home for the Christmas Holiday, others celebrated with friends and staff. All are looking forward to another year of growth, success and celebration!

New Years Resolutions 2007

Ok, be honest. How many of you have made New Years resolutions? How many of them did you keep? How many never made it past January 3? Sound familiar? Well, I know I have made the same resolutions every year since I can remember, and every year I fail to accomplish them. Oh, dont get me wrong, there has been a year or two or three that I actually followed through, but for the most part, well, you know the road paved with good intentions only leads to one place. So where did the New Years resolution begin? Historians have traced the origin of this custom back to the ancient Babylonians, who used the New Year to try to make amends for their wrongdoings of the past year. This could explain the top resolutions in todays society. You know: lose weight, quit smoking, exercise more, make more money, become more organized, etc. We are going to make up this year what we messed up last year. I questioned some of our friends here at Open Door to see what their resolutions are. Will they be your typical resolutions? Will they delve deep to come up with a fresh idea? What would they say...? Jim M.: To behave. Karen L.: To lose weight. Bob G.: I dont make one because no one ever keeps them so why make one? Sue C.: To get along with my step-mom better. Angie H.: To get along with my family better. Jean Z.: To drink more wine. Brian H.: To be a good Christian example. Lynn S.: Do my work without being told and hope things are better than 2006. Jen M.: To work when I am supposed to work. Angie J.: My resolution is to not make a resolution so I dont break it. So the million dollar question is who will keep their resolutions? Maybe we will follow up and see how everyone is doing. All I know is that whether you admit to it or not, somewhere deep down inside of all of us is a resolution to do something, improve something or quit something. We may not verbalize it, we may not act upon it, but its there. Happy New Year to all and may all your dreams, hopes and resolutions become reality. HELLO 2007!!!
