Dear Colleague, We are pleased to present the fourth annual LED Japan/Strategies in Light Conference and Expo. This years event follows upon a great success in 2010, in which attendance exceeded 6,100 attendees and the exhibit floor was sold out. These are truly exciting times for the high-brightness LED industry. During the past year, the HB LED market has undergone growth not seen since the earliest days of the industry in the mid-1990s. Driven by the adoption of LED backlights in notebook computers, monitors and LCD TVs, the overall market grew by 93% in 2010 to reach $10.8 billion. Average annual growth through 2015 is forecast at 11.8% per year. As the backlight market saturates over the next few years, the main driver for overall market growth will shift to the adoption of LED lighting, which is still in its early stages. Our focus for the LED Japan/Strategies in Light Conference and Expo 2011 is

Economics of LED Manufacturing: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Speaker: Jed Dorsheimer Managing Director, Equity Research, Lighting and Solar Canaccord Genuity The recent Second Cycle of the LED market led to a 4x increase in global LED manufacturing capacity through sheer scale. However, it may be argued that with combined yields in many cases below 50%, this massive capacity is being used inefficiently. While LED demand is expected to continue rising due to increased penetration of backlighting applications and the onset of lighting, a similar Third Cycle of MOCVD equipment is not expected. Rather, a changing tide in the yield vs. scale debate may be anticipated as manufacturers devote more CapEx into increasing the yields and productivity of their existing equipment to increase their return on investment, rather than simply employing more raw capacity. This presentation will discuss the lessons of the past and explore the future of LED manufacturing economics.

SESSION 3: NEW LED TECHNOLOGIES

16:00 16:25

150- and 200-mm GaN-on-Si LED-Wafers Processed on CMOS Lines Offer the Next LED Revolution
Speaker: Erwin Ysewijn Vice President Azzurro Advanced engineering of GaN-on-Si materials has created the next generation of proven base materials for the LED industry. Large-area wafers (150 mm now, 200 mm by the end of 2011) are able to facilitate dramatic cost reduction for LED-chips. Strain-engineering technology has overcome the bowing for large area GaN-on-Si wafers. This makes GaN-on-Si wafers suitable for processing on standard CMOS lines. One further key advantage of Si substrates is a better thermal conductivity resulting in better wavelength homogeneity, i. e. reduced binning. The Si substrate is intrinsically easier to remove than sapphire substrates, enabling high-brightness thin-film LEDs with higher yield and lower cost. Needless to say, Si substrates are much less expensive and face fewer supply constraints and price fluctuations. CAPEX spending can be nullified using existing CMOS foundries to have LED-chips made on large area GaN-on-Si.
Erwin Ysewijn started his marketing and sales career in 1989 working at Hitachi Semiconductors headquarters in Tokyo getting familiar with Japanese and international business culture. His main task was market development for power semiconductors such as IGBT, discrete and modules, POWERMOSFET and GaAs devices for the K/KU-band DBS applications. Since then he has spent most of his time in large parts of Asia, covering among others, Korea, India, Taiwan and China, working on marketing, sales and strategic M & A projects. In his last position before joining AZZURRO he headed global marketing activities at Lantiq.

Enabling the LED Lighting Revolution: LED Driver Electronics is the Next Big Thing
Speaker: Leonard Livschitz President and CEO Luxera, Inc. For years the majority of investments related to LED lighting were made into the development of LED die and LED emitter packaging. Leading LED manufacturers make forward looking statements of LEDs approaching $0.001/lm in the near future. What about the rest of the system? This presentation will demonstrate the paradigm shift approach in LED driver technology to overcome the limiting factors of current electronics and open the door to a truly cost-efficient driver electronics platform with superior reliability and performance as well as features for future system upgrades and functionality.
Leonard Livschitz is the founder of Luxera as well as its president and CEO. Mr. Livschitz is a recognized industry expert in LED Lighting. For over 15 years he held a number of executive and technical positions in sales, marketing, business development, and R&D with Philips Lumileds Lighting, LedEngin, Visteon Lighting and Ford Motor Company.
