Greenway collision solution

FoLLoWinG on from the incidents of collisions between cyclists and pedestrians, and cyclists and cyclists, and the issues between the different user groups on the Millennium Greenway, Sustrans are planning a couple of days of action on the pathway. The idea is to talk to the different users, give out bike bells, leaflets etc, and gauge the general feelings of everyday users about the problems. The proposed dates for this activity are the 3rd and 6th August between 11am - 2pm in Blacon (old station site) and newton School lay-by site. Major retailer for Hoole? TRADERS on Faulkner Street fear that one of the big supermarket groups could take over the Peters Hi-Fi store after its closure. There is talk that Tesco could move into the shop on the corner of Charles Street, which would have an impact on the other shops in the street. Hoole police meeting The next Hoole police beat meeting takes place on Saturday 13th August, 11am outside the Bromfield Arms, Faulkner Street, Hoole CRIMEFILE l A camera and wooden craft artefacts were stolen from a property in Hamilton Street recently. l Knowsley Road number plates were stolen from a parked car. l Faulkner Street - A garden shed was broken into and two mountain bikes stolen. l Sefton Road - Weed killer is believed to have been used to damage the lawn of premises.

Hoole LTC is up to the mark

HooLE LTC Secretary Beth James has been presented with a plaque stating that Hoole LTC has achieved the clubmark accreditation. The presentation was undertaken by Elizabeth Sweeting, the President of the LTA, Cheshire.

Hoole LTC achieved Clubmark in 2010. Tennis Clubmark is significant to the future of British Tennis as it recognises clubs that are delivering for British Tennis and supports clubs to develop their on court programme and off court policies and procedures in line with best practice. Clubmark is built around a set of core criteria which ensure that accredited clubs operate to a set of consistent and accepted minimum operating standards. it is now universally recognised by clubs wishing to show good practice and demonstrate commitment in developing young people within their club. Hoole LTC are delighted to have achieved this accreditation and plan to build on this by running a successful 2011 Hoole open tournament. Ace Tennis Academy holiday courses are continuing throughout the summer break at Hoole LTC and two other venues.

tepping out from the cool darkness of my hallway into the blinding light of the outside world, it would appear that i am taking my life into my own hands. At first, the cracked flagstones and dust storms dancing in the kerb left an apocalyptic taste in my mouth but now, scenes reminiscent of Seymours Audrey 2 la Little Shop of Horrors, only minus the dancing girls, spring into vibrant techincolour as i round each corner.
It takes me less than five minutes to complete the short walk to work and its only when i hit Lightfoot Street do i see civilisation. Before that, i am at the mercy of the Triffids. They came after the first break in the weather. While i was out in the backyard concentrating on my alpines, they arrived - small at first and basking in the sun as they began to break through the small cracks that run along the front of the houses. not being blessed with a front garden i step out of my front door straight into the wilderness pretty much like a biblical caricature in a pair of converse trainers blinded by what i mistake as the guiding light.

Day of the Triffids...

fingers out and weeded the crops now standing 6ft tall like wiry green bouncers on the doorsteps. they heard me! My voice carried to them in the stillness of the evening and the following morning as i stepped out into the silent heat they were waiting for me. they knew my routine, where i crossed the roads and the way i peered into the empty house at the end of the street to see if the new neighbours had arrived. they knew because they lined the route. they watched me. they stood and mocked me as i passed, the whole time waiting to attack. As i neared the empty house one reached out towards me but i managed to turn what looked like a trip into a small run leaping around the vine but in my moment of smugness at having escaped its leafy clutch i ran square on into a hanging basket, knocking myself back onto the pavement and blacking out. Once A&E had finished stitching me up and Id avoided the so, how did this happen Mr Medcraft i returned home to let the concussion take effect fully aware that as I lay flat out on the sofa watching day time television - the Triffids were watching me. It would appear the Triffids have been feeding in next-doors glass recycling bags. Not once has a bag returned following a collection and although i took comfort in discovering i was not the only one to fall foul to the organic matter taking control of our streets, i do now carry a bottle of Baby Bio just in case i am cornered on my way home. It would appear the Romans wrapped their flora and fauna in coloured plastic as a way of keeping them under control, or so it would appear if you took a wander along the Dee during the Chestival. i didnt feel as brave as the mighty gladiators when stood at the front door with a roll of cling film and a packet of felt tipped pens so now only venture out during daylight hours, keep my windows shut and my mouth closed praying for the day a swarm of locusts rain from the sky and wipe the ASBO worthy shrubbery from the streets of Hoole once and for all. that or Cheshire West and Chester roll into town with a spray gun of weed killer but my moneys on the swarm.

Some thoughts about Hoole by Andy Medcraft

As I stepped out into the silent heat they were waiting for me
in the beginning i didnt notice them but then as the week went on, it became obvious that they were watching us. growing tall enough to study us through our own front windows. Their roots fixing them against the brickwork as they watch - scrutinising our daily activities and biding their time before world domination With the beauty of hindsight i should never have spoken out against them but sometimes i forget myself and openly cast an opinion. its been my downfall on many occasion. i foolishly suggested that Cheshire West and Chester should have pulled their

Amazing support for Hoole school summer fair

The fair was opened by Ian Puleston-Davies He is pictured with his daughter Maggie. THE rain stayed away but not the Hoole community who thronged to the Hoole School Summer Fair on Saturday in their hundreds. opened by Coronation Street actor and Hoole resident ian Puleston-Davies (owen Armstrong) the fair featured many traditional favourite attractions including a cake stall, raffle, a coconut shy and tombola. The entertainment on offer also included the more unusual lob the loo roll and Wii dance challenge The Fair was fortunate to be supported by many local Hoole businesses who provided raffle prizes, donations and their time to make the fair a success. Paula norris (PTA chair) said afterwards im delighted that all the hard work of the pupils, teachers, parents, volunteers and generous donors and sponsors has been rewarded. Particular thanks must go to the businesses in Hoole whose generosity has been amazing. it has been a lovely afternoon. The fair raised 2,800 which will be used to purchase staging for the school hall. Head teacher Cheryl Walton said: Last summer i came to the fair as a visitor and was thoroughly impressed by the event. This year i feel incredibly proud to be part of the school with a PTA who work tirelessly to build a bond across the entire community.

BATTERIES REChARGEd
BY ThE REV ANdY GloVER

ChIldhood holidays give me some of my fondest memories of growing up. The long summer holidays seemed to last forever. During the last week of August as a family we would go somewhere by the sea and living in Stoke many of my holidays were spent on the North Wales Coast, Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, llandudno and Prestatyn. Chester for my dad was not an enjoyable experience as we travelled by car, there was no A55 in the 70s and Chester was something of a bottleneck as we had to go out on the coast road, which meant going through Saltney. I remember vividly the bridge in Saltney with the advert to North Wales Zoo on it!

As a look back my memory plays a trick on me, it tries to convince me that all my summer holidays were hot and sunny, the truth is that i only remember the days when i was outside and playing or on a beach which was when the sun was shining i dont really remember the days sitting inside a caravan when it was poring down with rain!! it is true, however what a difference a bit of sun does make, this year we seemed to have our July weather in April and our April weather in July! i am convinced that the weather has a major effect on the psychology of the nation. Wouldnt it be great if we could guarantee the next couple of months with wall to wall sunshine, we would all feel better and get out of the house the BBQ would be out every weekend and we would enter into more conversations with our neighbours as we were all out and about much more! However, if we didnt have the British weather then what would we talk about? A comment about the weather is the opening line to many conversations and this is due primarily i think, to the fact that in england we can have all 4 seasons in one day, our weather is so changeable. in fact it was only the beginning of the month that we had to turn the heating back on since it was so cold! the truth is that next week we might be back on with the heating! In fact it has been known to snow in June, in Buxton on 2nd June 1975, rudely and infamously affecting a cricket match between Derbyshire and Lancashire at Buxton where early afternoon snow covered the pitch with around an inch of snow. Maybe you have had your holiday or you are off in the next couple of weeks, Holidays are important in the rhythm of our busy and hectic lives, it is important that take time to stop even if just for a few days if we cant afford a week away. Many of us find it hard to stop we fill our lives with so much activity but we all need to find time to stop and be, the bible calls this Sabbath, here at Hoole Baptist Church we cancel all our meetings except Sunday mornings so we can have some space to rest. For me holidays give me the opportunity to reflect back on the previous year, to take stock of what I have achieved and to give thanks to God for the many blessings I have experienced. Maybe this year you too might use your holiday time to give yourself time to rest, to count your blessings and to acknowledge gods goodness. . Lets hope this August holidays leave us recharged and refreshed so that you can face September and our usual routines of life with renewed vigour and enthusiasm.

Andy glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 22 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth pastor, before becoming the pastor and now team Leader.
