LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Whats happened to Howard City!!!
TO THE EDITOR: I am a proud Citizen of Howard City because I believe that it is a Community that has not just survived but moved forward. After reading the letter to the Editor What happened to Howard City I would like to clarify what has happened to Howard City. Water Rates: Your water bill pays for two systems the Water System and the Sewer system, both are calculated on total gallons used. These rates are set not be make a profit but to support the operation and maintenance of the system and are in line with most communities our size. The water and sewer accounts are supported only by users; the Village and DDA also pay water and sewer bills to these accounts. Over the past few years the Village has been required by the DEQ to make upgrades to our systems luckily we have been able to secure grants that made less impact on the rates of the users. If a user wishes to obtain a separate meter to meter the water used for watering lawns or flowers or for sprinklers for children they should check with the Village office, this would eliminate the sewer usage charge to these activities. Bricks: Many of the residents have asked WHY? What Is It Costing ME? The answer to that question is Tax Dollars. However they are not tax dollars you have paid the Village of Howard City they are tax dollars you have already sent to Washington and Lansing that were obtained through grants from Michigan Economic Development Corp. and the Michigan Department of Transportation. Those funds if not used by the Village of Howard City would go to some other Community. Where would you rather have those tax dollars spent, Howard City or some other community? A portion of the Streetscape project is funded by the Downtown Development Authority, the funds to pay that portion is thru Tax Increment Financing. The does not raise anyones taxes and is not paid for from any General, Street, Water or Sewer account. Empty Houses: Between 2000 and 2010 Howard City housing units grew by 117 units, in 2000 there were 50 vacant homes and in 2010 there were 58 vacant homes. So with an increase of 117 homes there was only an increase of 8 vacant homes. Howard City was one of very few Citys and Villages that had an overall decrease in vacant homes between 2000 and 2010. The population grew from 1598 in 2000 to 1808 in 2010 which is a 13.1 percent increase, which was the largest percentage increase of any City or Village in Montcalm County. With growth we will encounter some problems but the positives far outweigh the negatives and if we work as a Community together we can continue build a better Howard City. S. MIcHaEl ScOTT, Village President

David Tebeau
David Tebeau, 50, of Howard City, passed away July 30, 2011, at his residence where he was surrounded by the love of his family and friends after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. David was a loyal friend, an electrician, a talented woodworker and even crafted an 18-and-a-half foot Chris Craft boat. He also was an avid fisherman, hunter and boater. David lived his life with no regrets. He was a faithful member of Bethel Lutheran Church. He was born March 26, 1961, in Muskegon, the son of William and Mary Ann (Sutherland) Tebeau. Surviving are his wife Jeanine Tebeau; mother Mary Ann Tebeau of Grand Rapids; his two beagles, Bella and Shimp; brother Steven (Diana); sister Anne Mary (Tebeau); nephew Andre Todd all of Grand Rapids; mother- and father-in-law, James (Carol) LaRue of Arizona; sisters-in-law, Laura (Mike) Gertz of Wasington, D.C. and their child Noelle and Katherine (Matt) Eppley of Arizona and their children, Rachel, Brenna and Reed. He was preceded in death by his father, William. Funeral services took place at the Bethel Lutheran Church with Pastor Joseph Fremer officiating with burial in the Reynolds Cemetery. Memorials to Spectrum Health Hospice may be left at the Heckman Funeral Home.

Leading Ladies begins Aug. 18

Ken Ludwigs uproarious comedy, Leading Ladies is the next production of the Cedar Springs Community Players. Its 1958 and down on their luck English actors, Jack and Leo are reduced to performing Shakespeare on the Moose Lodge circuit in Pennsylvania. Their fortune appears to change when they read of a dying old lady who is looking for her long lost English heirs, Max and Steve; children of her sister who moved to England many years ago. Impersonating the missing relatives, thereby inheriting part of the multi-million dollar legacy becomes the pairs new plan. As these actors take on roles of a life time the fun begins. Playwright, Ludwigs sense of humor has been compared to Billy Wilder, George S. Kaufman and the Marx Brothers. The fast paced, slapstick, goofiness of this farce is so funny, according to the Houston Press, it will make sophisticated and reasonable men and women of the 21st century cackle till their faces hurt. Dale Droski and Marc McKinley portray Leo and Jack. Laura Johnson and Katie Zank play their respective love interests, Meg and Audrey. Joanne Carter, Cody Eldred, Kim Johnson and Scott Phillips complete the cast. Performances are 7:30 PM, August 18, 19 and 20 at the historic Kent Theatre, 8 N. Main St., downtown, Cedar Springs. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Advance tickets may be purchased from the Cedar Springs Public Library, the Cedar Springs Chase Bank, a cast member or by calling 616.696.0949. For more information check out our website: wwwcscommunityplayers.org.

Health tips for the new school year

STATEPOINT MEDIA
As the new school year gears up and todo lists get longer, make sure to put your childs health on the list. Updating vaccinations, scheduling annual physicals and alerting your childs school about allergies and illnesses are crucial steps to ensure their academic success, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Children need to feel their best in order to learn, and schools need to be able to provide for students daily health issues as well as special needs, accidents and emergencies, says O. Marion Burton, MD, of the AAP. You can ensure a safe and happy year for both parent and child with a little planning. Vaccinations Thanks to immunizations, most children in the United States today lead much healthier lives than generations past. And while vaccines have reduced many infectious diseases to low levels in the United States, vacationers can bring old and new diseases back into the country. Measles, for example, is still prevalent in other parts of the world and has been linked to recent outbreaks in the U.S. Unvaccinated children are at risk. Thats why routine, up-to-date vaccinations are as important today as they have ever been. There may be tears, but the pain associated with most immunizations is minor. Consult your pediatrician about keeping your childs vaccination schedule up to date. Food Allergies and Illnesses If your child suffers from food allergies or other health issues that require management during the school day, be sure to contact the school nurse and update your child`s health plan at school. This will ensure that proper steps are taken if the child develops symptoms while at school, and

that his or her activities are not restricted unnecessarily. A childs health can change from year to year or even month to month, so make sure the school is well aware of how to handle new conditions or restrictions. Parents should also check that you have provided the school with any special medications your child needs. Annual Physicals Along with your childs regular annual physical, aspiring athletes should get a sports physical before the start of the season. Childrens bodies are vulnerable to injury, and as youngsters move through middle childhood -- becoming bigger, stronger, faster, and more aggressive -- the incidence of injuries rises. Make sure your athlete wears a well-fitted helmet, mouthpiece, face guard, padding, eye gear, protective cup, or other equipment appropriate for the sport. Of course, regardless of whether your child is on a competitive team or not, parents should promote physical activity for all kids. Fathers, sons, and brothers marched off to war 150 years ago as a civil war between the states began in the early morning hours of April 12th. Come hear the stories of the hardships the women endured as their loved ones marched off to war. Pieces of the Past will be presented by Krista Prout Wednesday, August 10th at 11 a.m. at the Reynolds Township Library. The program is being sponsored by the Library Friends Group. See civil war artifacts, historic quilts, and Howard City & Amble history. Everyone is welcome to show up for muster at 11 a.m.

HAYFOOT/STRAWFOOT

Many people complain of sinus problems. I used to be one of them. I never had any nasal congestion or itchy eyes, until I came to Michigan. Then, slowly over the years things got bad, until the early 1990s, when I was taking antibiotics at least eight times a year for sinus infections. I had become sensitive to everything. Three days after going to work for Dr. Grant Born at the Born Clinic in Grand Rapids, he said to me, You have food allergies and Candida! I am tired of hearing you snifng all the time. You need to x that. I was amazed. He knew without an examination what was wrong. I was embarrassed because I did not even realize I was snifng and snorting all the time. I was allergic to 38 of the 102 foods we tested. And I was loaded with Candida, which is a yeast commonly found in the digestive tract. It does not belong in the sinuses. Mayo Clinic published a study that found this yeast in the sinuses of many people with chronic sinusitis. Unfortunately the numbers of yeast grow every time one takes an antibiotic. The yeast then cause inammation and blockage of the sinus drain passages and then bacterial infections start again. Now the need for more antibiotics keeps the vicious cycle going along with a downward spiral in general levels of health. People that have this problem are almost always allergic to dairy. (Remember The Leaky Gut Syndrome?) Often wheat, eggs, soy, and corn become contributing foods. The yeast causes two problems. We can become allergic to them. This causes an increase in the general allergen load. And they can give off toxic by-products which can cause fatigue and bromyalgia. Because of the yeast allergy, the yeast and mold containing foods like bread, mushrooms, and alcohol drinks are often culprits. Diets high in sugar tend to feed yeast so sugars and starchy foods add to the problem. The addition of a supplement, Probiotic, is a must. These are good bacteria that are naturally found in our body, sinuses, digestive tract, and vagina. They normally help keep the yeast in check, but antibiotics kill them, so they are often out of balance, letting the yeast grow wildly. Probiotics (usually Acidophilus) should be taken orally, 2-4 billion units per day. For chronic sinusitis, it is benecial to put some Probiotic in saline nasal spray and squirt them up the nose four or ve times per day. Within six month my snotty nose was much better. I only had post nasal drainage if I cheated on dairy products. Most of the other allergic foods I was able to add back in on a limited basis as my bodys sensitivity decreased. I have not had to take an antibiotic in over 15 years. What an amazing change. So keep in mind, sinus infections may have an allergic base underneath it. There may be a yeast, Candida Albicans contributing to the problem. And you may need to replace the good health ora with some Probiotic. All and all, you can solve this problem. The bonus was that I eliminated 30 pounds of belly fat during that six months as well as feeling much, much better. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

A bad attitude can cost you custody

By Jeanne L. Jerow, Attorney, Counselor, Mediator Howard City They started with joint custody. In 2009 the Chippewa County Circuit Court granted Ms. Mattson and Mr. Stark joint custody of their daughter, who was still a very young child. Both parents doted on her. Both wanted the best for her. For the next six months they tried to make it work, but there had been a lot of love lost in their breakup. And Mother could not keep her ill feelings toward Dad under control. Mother was antagonistic. While she was with either parent the child was well cared for and loved. The schedule was two days with one parent, two days with the other, and alternating three-day weekends. Thus each parent had ve uninterrupted days at a time. But there were words during exchanges. Mother displayed anger. She was belligerent. She shouted in front of the child. She went out of her way to let him know how she felt about him. Each time, the child was with her. Eventually Mother lost custody. Theres a law the Best Interests law. A judge can only change custody if the court nds that based on 13 different factors it weighs the change is in the minor childs best interests. For the most part, these parents could have been found equal on most factors but for Moms repeated inability to be nice. Even if she didnt like Dad, and even if he might have been a real schmuck in her eyes, she had crossed the line with her inability to hold her tongue in front of the child. Clear and convincing evidence. There was clear and convincing evidence in court that since entry of the last custody order the conditions mother was subjecting the child to meaning how Mom was treating Dad in front of the child could have a signicant effect on the childs well-being. Heres the big lesson - Dad didnt have to prove that Moms behavior had already affected the childs wellbeing. It was only necessary that it could have a signicant effect. (Well, of course it could. Imagine how upset a child could be if she has to see one parent treat the other badly - even once!) So be nice to your childs other parent. Hold your tongue. Besides, its what we expect from grown-ups (and politicians, but thats for another column). Jeanne Jerow practices in Howard City. Divorce & Custody, Certicate in Estate Plans, Probate, Wills & Trusts, Auto Accidents, and Property Law. Remember, because you read it here, its not your personal legal advice. Dont depend on it.

She should have bit her lip. The Judge discussed the evidence: in March, 2010 Mother had come to Fathers home with the child in tow, shouting and cursing, and refused to leave when asked. Dad had then openly videotaped her ranting which he showed the judge during the custody hearing. On another occasion Dad already had the child in his arms when Mother decided to refuse to let the child go because Dad had showed up late. Mother grabbed her and sent her into the house. On more than one occasion Mother had verbally assaulted Father in front of the child (meaning yelled accusations and/or threats). And once, Mother was so angry she told the child it would be okay to run away from Fathers home.
