Custom Trays
Custom trays improve the accuracy of elastomeric impressions. Elastomeric impression materials are more accurate in uniform, thin layers of 2-3 mm. The custom tray must be rigid and should have stops on the occlusal surface. Clearance between the tray and the teeth should be 2-3 mm.

Preparing a Tray
Try the custom tray in the mouth to verify its fit. An adhesive (polyvinyl or polyether) is applied evenly to the internal surface of the custom tray providing a uniform bond between the impression material, adhesive, and tray. Adhesive must dry before adding the impression material.

The mixture is thoroughly spatulated until the mixed paste is uniform in color with no streaks of base or catalyst appearing in the mixture. If one component is in liquid form, a length of the base paste is dispensed on a graduated mixing pad and one drop of the liquid catalyst is added for each unit length of base.
