Lesson 3 Distinctions between Management in General, Personnel Management and Human Resource Management

Figure 3 As we can see from the diagram general management, personnel management and Human resource management are all inter-related but distinct on their nature and scope. In the diagram, we can see that general management includes all the resources found in an organization which enumerated as minutes, methods, man, money, machine, material and market. In general management covers six areas of concerns. These are the following: 1. Production or service management- this deals with product design, and managing production operations or service delivery operations. 2. Marketing management-deals with marketing research, the Ps of marketing and public image building. 3. Financial management- deals with fund source mobilization, managing use of funds and earnings, and financial forecasting. 4. Human resource management-deals with managing human capital and knowledge management. 5. External relations management- deals with corporate social responsibility and managing linkages and network. 6. Strategic management- deals with the analysis, decisions, and actions undertaken by decision makers and/or governing board of the organization to create and sustain competitive advantages.(p. 10)

Now under the human resource management is personnel management (see the diagram). According to our book, the term personnel management, is used to describe the process used in managing the work force but has been replaced by the terms Human Resource Management.
