The Joanne (Joe) Bingley Memorial Foundation, was set up because Joe, due to severe postnatal depression tragically

took her own life 10 weeks after becoming a mother. The charity works to raise the awareness of postnatal depression and to educate both the public and professionals, with aims to both save and improve lives. Did you know that according to a recent report by the Patients Association, service provision for families affected by postnatal depression can be poor to nonexistent in some areas of the UK? Therefore no help when individuals & families need it most. One approach to addressing this is a workshop presented by two trustees of the charity.

Many front line healthcare professionals may not be aware of the devastating effect of postnatal depression and they may lack the confidence to approach women who may or may not be suffering from postnatal depression. They fear they wont know what to say or do and they are afraid of the time it will take. At the heart of this one day workshop, aimed at overcoming these concerns, is Elaines powerful and inspirational story about her descent into and subsequent recovery from one of the extreme forms of postnatal depression, puerperal psychosis. Time will be set aside for opportunities to reflect on elements of the story and to consider best practice in light of this. The workshop is a mixture of presentation, group work and discussion in a supportive environment. Elaine and Ann are also happy to design a bespoke programme based upon your needs Who should attend? All those who work in any services wanting an introduction to working with women with postnatal depression and their families. Families currently affected by poor maternal mental health following childbirth.

She is now an international inspirational speaker and campaigner on the topic. Ann Girling is a health visitor by background but is now a fully accredited coach. She has both passion and knowledge in the field of postnatal depression having facilitated training and developed practice. Her book Journey to Chocolate will be published in the autumn of 2011. Both are trustees of the Joanne (Joe) Bingley Memorial Foundation.
