balance what you want to do
and the items you wish to pur-
chase with your budget limita-
tions. After all, your project
budget will probably be your
biggest constraint when buying
materials or contracting profes-
sional services. Fortunately,
there are ways to upgrade, main-
tain and even modernize your
home, all while sticking to an
affordable budget. If you want to
transform your home from bor-
ing and outdated to interesting
and modern, try using these five
affordable actions.
Work in Small Steps
Although you might want to
redecorate your entire home all
at the same time, it's usually not
in the budget to do so. Instead,
focus on remodeling just one
room, or work on a single project
instead of starting several differ-
ent projects. This affordable
approach to home decorating
also has the advantage of giving
you plenty of time to make all
the right decisions. You'll also
avoid the problem of getting
part of the project done, then
running out of money to com-
plete it. After all, you want to cre-
ate a beautiful home, not a col-
lection of wishful and yet incom-
plete home improvement proj-
ects.
Set Realistic Goals
Although you might really
want to buy all new furniture
plus a big screen television as
part of your family room renova-
tion project, you might not be
able to afford to buy all these

cies, you should start a savings
account. You can then use the
money you save to pay for

Therapeutic lifestyle changes are important for the prevention
and management of heart disease. Dyslipidemia (abnormal lipid
levels in the blood) is one of the major modifiable risk factors of
coronary heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions.
Modifications in one's diet and regimen, collectively known as
therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC), are used by doctors and
nutritionists as a key component of treatment in the manage-
ment of dyslipidemia.
The diet component of therapeutic lifestyle change is based on
lowering the intake of saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium to
help reduce the blood cholesterol level and lower cardiovascular
risk. According to therapeutic lifestyle change diet guidelines,
one should consume just enough calories to achieve or maintain
a healthy weight and not more than 25-30% of the day's total
calories from fat. Also, it is advised to consume less than 7% of
total calories from saturated fat, less than 10% of total calories
from polyunsaturated fats, up to 20% of total calories from
monounsaturated fats, and less than 200 mg of dietary choles-
terol a day.
In order to minimize saturated fat intake, one needs to limit
the consumption of ghee, butter, margarine, coconut, coconut
oil, palm oil, and palm kernel oil. Choosing lean meats (like
chicken without the skin) and fish over red meat or shellfish may
also help to significantly reduce saturated fat intake. To step
down the total cholesterol intake, foods mainly egg yolk, cheese,
crab, lobsters, pork, mutton, and shrimps should be kept to a
minimum.
The therapeutic lifestyle change diet also promotes limiting
the intake of sodium to around 2400 mg per day. Dietary restric-
tion of sodium firstly involves restricting the intake of salt and
secondly avoiding highly salted foods such as crackers, potato
chips, salted nuts, salted popcorn, salted snacks, ready-to-eat
and processed foods, canned vegetables, baking powder, soda,
and ajinomoto.
The recommendations for cholesterol and sodium remain the
same irrespective of the total caloric intake of a person; however,
the recommendations for saturated fat and total fat are based on
the percentage of calories an individual consumes.
Furthermore, the therapeutic lifestyle change diet emphasizes
on the intake of 10-25 grams of soluble fiber every day. Soluble
fiber found in many high-fiber foods like oats, citrus fruits,
apples, barley, psyllium, flax seeds and beans decreases the
absorption of cholesterol by binding to it and thereby eliminating
it from the body.
The other major component of the therapeutic lifestyle change
is moderate exercise, which has been found to reduce the levels
of bad cholesterol (LDL and triglycerides) whilst increasing the
level of good cholesterol (HDL) in the blood.

New Vision Optical has welcomed Dr. Anna Tanke to
their staff in Gaylord. Dr. Tanke has a passion for spe-
cialty contact lens fitting; including multifocal, monovi-
sion, astigmatism lenses and keratoconic fits. Keeping
with the latest ocular medications and treatments is
very important to Dr. Tanke. She attends several hours
of continuing education classes each year and is a
member of the American Academy of Optometry and
has presented at national conferences.
Dr. Tanke was born and raised in Vassar, Michigan.

She earned her bachelors degree in Biological
Sciences from Saginaw Valley State University and grad-

Arteries carry blood from the heart to all parts of the
body. Blood pressure is the force that pushed along the
arteries every time the heart beats. So, blood pressure is
a measure of how hard the heart has to work to pump
blood.
This process is known as systolic pressure. The
process where the heart is at rest, between beats and
the blood pressure falls is known as diastolic pressure.
Blood pressure is measured using a blood pressure cuff
and recorded as systolic pressure over diastolic pres-
sure. The top number indicates the systolic pressure
and the bottom indicates the diastolic pressure. Normal
blood pressure must be lower than 120/80.
Blood pressure varies during the course of a day. It is
lowest when the person is resting and gradually rises as
the person gets up. Blood pressure usually rises when
the person is tense, agitated, or generally energetic,
even though it stays pretty much the same. Blood pres-
sure in children is comparatively much lower than in
the adults since pressure rises as a person ages.
The systolic and diastolic reading of 140/90 or higher
indicates high blood pressure. This usually results in
faster heartbeat as the heart tries to pump blood faster,
and this might result in a stroke, heart attack, and kid-
ney problems due to the pressure on the arteries.
Severe medical problems also cause blood pressure to
rise. Also, arteries become hardened and narrowed with
cholesterol plaque and calcium, resulting in the heart
having to pump harder to make blood pass through
these arteries. When the heart pumps harder, blood
pressure tends to automatically increase.
High blood pressure is linked to hypertension, which
leads to heart attack. With a reading higher than
180/110 the patient required immediate medical atten-
tion since the risk of heart attack is greatest.

The formula for losing weight is simple: eat
less and exercise more. But, it's not really all
that simple, is it? Long-term weight loss isn't
impossible, but you do have to be committed.
Having a weight loss plan for your success is a
good start.
Here are ten items that should go into your
weight loss plan.
1. Eat breakfast. This keeps you from get-
ting too hungry later and then losing control
over what you choose to eat later in the day.
2. Stock your refrigerator and pantry with
healthy foods and snacks and limit high-fat,
high-salt snacks such as potato chips and
cookies.
3. Fill up on Fiber. Eat foods like fruits, veg-
etables and whole grains. The fibers in these
foods will fill you up leaving less room for
unhealthy choices.
4. Don't fall into bad habits on weekends.
Many people will follow a strict diet on week-
ends only to fall back into eating more
(unhealthy) on the weekends as a reward for
"being good" all week. Unfortunately, this can
cause you to regain the weight you may have
lost during the week.
5. Watch portion sizes. Your perception of
what a serving size should be and a "true"
serving size can differ dramatically. Measure
your portions accurately, especially when you
first start your healthy eating regime.
6. Set lifestyle goals - not weight loss goals.
Commitment to eating healthy foods does
lead to healthy weight loss -- gradually.
Looking at your weight daily can cause dis-
couragement and will make many people
give up and go back to unhealthy food choic-
es.
7. Take healthy snacks with you when you
take road trips. Grab healthy granola bars,
bananas, apples and other fruit to prevent the
temptation of stopping for a candy bar or
milk shake.
8. Don't deny yourself the foods you love. If
you absolutely love chocolate, go ahead and
have a small piece - half of a candy bar
instead of a whole one! And avoid eating your
"splurges" every day. Save them for when you
really need them!
9. Start moving. Exercise is the key to long
term weight loss. You've heard the saying,
"Move it or lose it." Too true!
10. Keep a journal. Writing down what you
eat, when and how much you exercise and
your moods will keep you on track and moti-
vated to continue the course.
Weight loss is achieved by both diet and
exercise. It is also achieved by persistence. If
you "fall off the wagon" one day, pick yourself
up and continue your healthy lifestyle the
next. Don't give up!

The menu offers a moderately priced and
nicely varied selection of traditional
American cuisine, highlighted by freshly pre-
pared soups and salads, specialty sandwich-
es and burgers, house favorites including

Chef John Kaye, who learned his culinary

Audiences are long familiar with Jeff Daniels acting perform-
ances on the big screen in such movies at Terms of Endearment,
The Purple Rose of Cairo, Arachnophobia, Dumb & Dumber, and
my personal favorite; Escanaba in da Moonlight, but this
Michigan-based actor is also a singer/songwriter and accom-
plished guitarist with four CD recordings under his hat.
On Friday, August 19th, Mr. Daniels will bring his captivating
musical show to the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey. He
pens most of the music he performs, songs that reflect his ever-
changing view of everyday life.
I dont write hits, Daniels explains on his website; jeff-
daniels.com, They (songs) are my diaries. I had everything Ive
ever written in this big, black notebook. Some of them were
typed, some were in long hand, but all of them had a time and a
place that marked some moment in my life. If you really wanted
to get to know me, youd find me in there.
A special guest during the evening will be Brian Vander Ark, a
Lansing area native who scored a billboard chart topper, The
Freshman, in the 1990s with his band Verve Pipe.
Tickets for the August 19th performance, which begins at 7 pm,
are $30 and available at Crooked Tree, Grain Train and Blissfest. If

The heart of the multi-faceted use of the
Kirtland Center for the Performing Arts is the
Performing Artist Series, and the newly struc-
tured Build-Your-Own-Season ticket program
is designed to give patrons who see four or more
shows a generous discount, even if they do not
