PROFInet

PROFInet more than just Ethernet

Open Solutions for the World of Automation

PROFInet the automation standard

When applying Ethernet in industrial automation, special demands are made of the components used. The most important are: s Industry-compatible installation s Easy network administration and diagnosis s Fast response times in the exchange of process data (real-time capability) s System-wide cross-vendor engineering s High availability of machines and systems In addition, system operators attach importance to being able to integrate existing components and applications into the new systems.

The answer to these requirements is PROFInet the Ethernet-based automation standard developed by PROFIBUS International. PROFInet allows implementation of distributed automation structures and integration of simple decentralized field devices into Ethernet systems as well as the operation of motion control applications. Realtime applications and standard TPC / IP services, like remote diagnosis, can be used at the same time.

PROFInet can be applied in a very wide range of industries, for example: s s s s Production systems Assembly systems Systems in the automotive industry Systems in the food and beverage industries s Packaging systems s ...

Range of functions of PROFInet

PROFInet specifies functions, that allow implementation of an integral automation solution from network installation to web-based diagnosis. The modular structure of PROFInet permits extremely easy expansion to include further functions. PROFInet also offers a standardized vendor-independent engineering interface. It allows easy integration of devices and components from various manufacturers into a single system. The communication links between devices are not programmed but configured in graphic form.

For communication purposes, PROFInet uses Ethernet at three performance levels: " The transfer of engineering and non-time-critical data is conducted via TCP /IP and DCOM. This communication takes place between intelligent field devices in distributed automation structures. " For transferring time-critical process data, there is the realtime channel available called Soft Realtime (SRT). It is implemented as software based on available controllers. " For motion control applications, isochronous real-time communication (IRT) is available which allows jitter accuracy of 1 s at a clock rate of 1 ms. The integration of existing field bus applications is accomplished with the proxy concept. The proxy is the representative of field bus devices on PROFInet.

The specific requirements for Ethernet networks in an industrial environment are: " System-specific cable routing " Specific degree of networking for each machine / system " Linear network structures " Rugged industry-compatible cables and connectors with special requirements fulfilled in terms of EMC and temperature. PROFInet installations are based on these principles and provide the device manufacturer with clear specifications for device interfaces and the wiring for them. The PROFInet Installation Guide provides the system manufacturer / operator with simple rules for the installation of Ethernet networks.

Network management with PROFInet

Network management covers all the functions for the administration of PROFInet devices in Ethernet networks: " Device and network configuration, e.g., issue of IP parameters based on standards like DHCP " Network diagnosis based on standards like SNMP

Integration of Web functions

The Web Integration allows access to the PROFInet devices over the Internet: PROFInet opts for utilization of proven standard technologies like http, HTML and XML. By the definition of uniform Web-Sites for device information, diagnosis and report functions, the simple search for errors and the set up are possible without engineering tools. The devices are accessed over a standard-browser, like Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Distributed automation with PROFInet

Machines and systems are divided into technological modules, each of which is comprised of mechanical, electrical / electronics and software. The functionality of the technological modules is encapsulated in the form of PROFInet components. From the outside, the PROFInet components can be accessed via interfaces with standardized definitions. They can be combined with one another like building blocks as required and easily reused.

Due to the open engineering interface, PROFInet components from different manufacturers can be imported into a higher-level engineering tool (interconnection editor), after which the communication relations between the components are configured graphically. PROFInet engineering thus takes place in three stages: " Generation of components (XML file) " Interconnection of components " Downloading of interconnection information to the devices

Downloading of the connection data into the devices.

Integration of decentralized field devices into PROFInet

Configuration

PROFInet allows direct interfacing of decentralized field devices on Ethernet (PROFInet IO). This supports flat communication hierarchies in automation. All the devices used are connected in a consistent network structure and therefore provide open communication throughout the entire production system. The signals from the field devices (distributed periphery) are processed directly in the assigned control. Configuration is performed via a device description file (GSD), which already proved successful in PROFIBUS DP. Integration of decentralized field devices is an optimal add-on to distributed automation. A combination of the two can be implemented in a PROFInet network at any time.
