Registration Period

Overseas Korean admissions for the Seoul campus is only available through the early admissi ons schedule while the Yongin Campus only offers admission through the regular admissions sch edule. Applicants who already submitted qualification papers for early admission do not need to res ubmit qualification supporting documents for their regular admission attempt . However, applica nts must resubmit the admission application documents. This admission schedule also applies to prospective international students who are funded un der the Korean Government Sponsorship Program (KGSP). Those who are selected by the Nation al Institute for International Education Development (NIED) for the sponsorship are recommended to a bide by this time schedule, together with self-financing international students. However, the president of the university may set an exclusive time-line for the students sponsored by the KGSP if deemed abs olutely necessary. The terms "junior high" and "senior high school" may be country-specific. Their equivalents such as grad es 10, 11 and 12 for senior high school, in a 12 year system of formal education are equally acceptable.

For Overseas Koreans qualified under item A above, transfer admission will also be granted for graduates from other foreign-based universities (colleges), applicable to both undergraduate and gra duate programs.

5. Qualification Review Criteria


A. Recognition of Schools Outside of Korea 1) The school must be located outside Korea and must be furnished with curriculum recognized by t he local education law. 2) International schools located in Korea are not acceptable nor are kindergartens, preschools and lan

guage training institutions. 3) In principle, the school must be located in the country of the qualified parent's work or residence. However, if the qualified parent works or lives in a region which is deemed by t he head of the overseas embassy or its equivalent as being an unsafe place due to ideological, political, religious and other regions, students who studied in a third country may be acknowledged as an inevita ble and exceptional case). B. Recognition of Enrollment Period 1) The period of overseas education will be recognized to the extent of the period of mission (residen ce) of the principal guardian (qualifying parent). 2) If applicants submit a certification of reason for enrollment in a third country (as described in item 3 above) due to special circumstances, the period of enrollment in the third country may be counted. 3) Vacations between semesters during enrollment in a foreign school will be counted as the oversea s enrollment period. However, no temporary enrollments during vacation period after the student's tra nsfer back to a Korean school may be counted as a period of overseas enrollment.) 4) Admissions office will recognize overseas enrollments that are as short as a semester or a term. H owever, in such a case, the student must have been enrolled for the entire semester, from the beginning to end. 5) For prospective graduates from senior high school abroad, HUFS will recognize the period remain ing to the day of the graduation as the period of overseas enrollment. 6) Admissions office will also recognize grades skipped or early graduates due to academic excellen ce, unless any irregularities or malpractice is suspected. 7) Up to a semester (6 months) of duplicated enrollment period overseas will be recognized as part of overseas enrollment if it is caused due to variation of academic calendar between two countries. 8) Period of enrollment as a repeat student will not be counted. 9) Any other matters not defined here will be as determined by the HUFS admissions board for overs eas Koreans and International Students.

qualified parent. There is no requirement or restriction as to the interval of repatriation and expatriati on to the concerned country. Also, there is no requirement in terms of spouse's actual residence overse as. 2) HUFS does not apply the 2 and half years of statute of limitation since graduation from high school, for acknowledgement of overseas Korean qualification for admissions. 3) Dual passport holders as recognized by the law governing nationality will also be recognized of their admission qualification. Applicants who do not take the written exam will be cancelled out from the selection. Applicants will be short-listed in the order of examination score (up to five times the intended prospective student headcount will be short listed after the exam). B. Selection Method 1) Overseas Koreans A) Students will be first screened based on their examination scores, regardless of department, up t o the total prospective student target number per campus or college. In the second selection phase, eac h faculty group (department/division) will select their students within their headcount plan and criteria. B) Students with tied points will be screened in the priority order of proficiency in English, then Korean. C) Admission will not be granted to applicants whose scholastic aptitude to be enrolled in HUFS is deemed inadequate. 2) International Students -There is no fixed entrance quota for any College/Divisions/Departments for prospective international students.

10. Important Notice for Applicants


A. Application Guideline 1) Qualification Review paperwork and application forms are only accepted through the internet. 2) Note that all documents submitted for admission are not returnable and the fees are not refundable (document review fee, admissions processing fee). The information in the admissions package may not be modified after final submission. However, students who applied for the early decision overseas Kor ean admissions program and have not passed the written examination will be refunded the document re view fee of 50,000won. 3) The result of document review for regular decision overseas Koreans and both early/regular decisi on international students will be notified individually no later than the last date of information services for the exam room guide. Students who did not pass the document review will be refunded of their ad missions processing fee. 4) Early decision applicants may apply to HUFS colleges and other universities at the same time. 5) Students who pass the early decision admission must register in one of the universities they have admissions to. Not registering in the early decision will not grant the applicant right to apply to the reg ular admission nor to the waiting list admissions thereafter. Violation of this policy is subject to cancel lation of all admissions and student registration. 6) Applicants who submitted the document review paperwork under the early decision admissions sc hedule do not need to resubmit the same documents for the regular admission. If the candidate fails the early admission and intends to apply for the regular admission, the university will accept the applicatio n forms without the qualification review documents. 7) Applicants may not apply to another university under the same Admission Group II or another HU FS college/division/department. Furthermore, applicants who are admitted under the regular decision s chedule and registered as a student at HUFS (including initial registration and registration for waiting l ist admissions) may not apply to the waiting list admissions. Violation of this will nullify the studen t's admission, under the relevant law. 8) Exam papers for applicants discovered cheating will be nullified and matriculation rescinded. 9) Matriculation will be rescinded in the case where the applicant is discovered to have applied throu gh illegal means such as submission of false or forged materials; 10) For matters not defined in this guidebook, the HUFS freshmen admission procedure and handboo k on outside quota admission procedures will be applicable.

B. Important Notice
Students who fall under both categories of "international student" (both paren ts hold foreign passports, completed all 12 years education overseas, North Korea n defectors) and Overseas Korean (e.g. children of overseas Korean who completed all 12 years of education abroad) must categorize themselves as "International St udents".

1) Application Form A) Be careful to ensure that the information filled out in the application documents are accurate. An y wrongful entry of information, mistakes and/or omissions will be the sole accountability of the applic ant, including any disadvantages caused due to wrong information entry. B) Indicate applicant classification in the section provided for applicant classification. C) It is important that personal identification information such as name and Korean resident ID num ber (Alien Registration Number) are indicated accurately according to their representation in the forma l certifications (passport). Korean students who do not have Korean resident number must accurately e nter the number of the Certificate of Residency in Korea and students of foreign nationality must enter the their date of birth in the first 6 digit section followed by 1000000 (1 + six zeros) for men and 2000 000 (2 + six zeros) for women. D) All document and application forms will be formally acknowledged after completion of the elect ronic payment (document review fee, admissions processing fee). E) Application forms may not be modified or cancelled after final submission. 2) Qualification Review Application Form & Overseas School Fact Sheet A) The application form for qualification review must be filled out in the order of primary, junior hi gh and senior high school enrollment in chronological order and the period of enrollment must indicate down to the month and year of enrollment. B) If there is not enough space to list the entire enrollment history, indicate in the priority of senior high then junior high schools. C) The overseas school fact sheet must contain all the information necessary to allow formal inquir y into the student's fact of enrollment such as the school address, telephone and fax numbers. Any disa dvantage caused on the student due to misinformation and omissions is the sole accountability of the st udent. C. Submission of Application Documents 1) Place all required documents including the application form and qualification review documents i n a large document envelope and attach one cover page outside the envelope indicating applicant No, t arget major (department), college and name, and add the remark "application form inside" before subm itting to the admission office in person or through postal delivery, no later than the due date indicated (post marked should be on or before the date). 2) Admission will not be granted where any of the required documents are omitted. 3) Applicants who submitted copies of originals should submit original documents no later than Febr uary 27, 2009 (Fri). 4) Original documents can be returned only to the applicants who are not admitted or who give up en rollment at HUFS, by February 27, 2009. 1. Information on the University Curriculum


HUFS currently offers a number of degree options to offer its students a wider range of choices in specialization through its double major and concentration programs, international and domestic student exchange options, among others.

1) Double-Major Program
r Double Majo Students can pursue a second major in departments and colleges othe r than their initial choice of major upon admission. Students will be recognized as B.A. holders in both fields. Benefits

All students other than transfer, law, military-entrusted students Course Requ and certificate of engineering program students must complete eithe irements r the double major option or the concentration program. This program is available in parallel with the double major option. Under the concentration track, students will not have two fields of Concentratio major but have one intensive program in field of major and a compul n sory field of minor. (law or Information Industry & students who op ted for certificate of engineering education must complete the mino r program or free electives course) Practical Fo Students declaring double major or concentration must acquire the m reign Langua inimal foreign language score to be able to graduate, even if they ge have passed the graduation examination.

2) 7+1 System
What Selection Students study one out of eight semesters overseas and credit they ea rn there are recognized for graduation. 400 students are selected from sophomore and above, by each departmen t.

Benefits

Up to 18 credits acquired during the student's study abroad will be r ecognized. Tuition for HUFS during the semester of the students enrol lment overseas will be paid from the HUFS scholarship fund (partial s cholarship in some departments). However, students must finance their own tuition for the overseas university.

3) Declaring a Second Area of Concentration in the other HUFS Campus Where students wish to declare a second area of concentration which is not of fered in their campus may attend the course for their field of minor in the ot her campus for 1-2 years after completing the initial four years in their orig inal campus. The students will be recognized as BA holders in both fields. * Seoul campus students may take courses in Philosophy and History in Yongin while Yongin Campus students may take the politics and diplomacy, public admin istration, law, business administration, journalism, advertisement and PR, TV and Film as their second concentration. 4) Interdisciplinary Programs Interdisciplinary programs are courses offered jointly by at least two depar tments (divisions, colleges). Interdisciplinary programs currently offered inc lude the North East Asia specialization program offered by the department of C hinese and Japanese, the Cultural Contents specialization program offered by t he division of literature and language studies, the BRICs-related major offere d by the economics & business departments in conjunction with IT related depar tments and EU-related specialization program offered by the EU-related departm ents. 5) Teacher Certification Program Students enrolled in departments with courses for Teacher Certification Progra m may apply for eligibility to the teacher certification program in the first semester of sophomore year. Students will be selected based on the given quota per department. Selected students will begin taking the relevant courses from the second semester of the sophomore year and after completing the entire prog ram, may be issued the teacher certification if the student received at least 80 out of 100 score in his/her major and the teacher certification courses eac h respectively. idance 6) Early Graduation Students performing with excellence in the first two years of HUFS (at least GPA 4.0 out of 4.5) are eligible to apply for early graduation. The student ma y take additional three credits per semester beginning the third year and aim to graduate within 7 semesters instead of 8. 7) Change of Major Field Change of major refers to the transfer of a student from one department (or major) to another during their enrollment at HUFS. Students who feel that thei r choice of major is not right for them after admission will have a chance to change their major once after admission, through this option. Change of major is open only within the same campus and to those successfully mo ving on the sophomore year. The allowed percentage of inbound/outbound transfers i s within 10% of admission quota per department. Student must have completed the first year with at least 34 credits with GPA of at least 3.5. Change of major is permitted limited to 1 time per student during their entire e nrollment in the university. Students from non-education colleges may not transfer to any department in the c ollege of education. The student may not move within their own college/division that they were origin ally admitted to. Change of major will be announced in December and become effective in January. 8) International University Exchange Programs HUFS will recognize credits earned by students from formal four year universit ies overseas, that are approved by HUFS, as follows: Exchange programs during HUFS academic term(6 months, 1 year): up to 17~18 credits per semester may be recognized. Short Training Program during vacation: up to 6 credits can be recognized. 9) Exchange Programs with Korean Universities HUFS will recognize credit taken from other universities in Korea with whom HU FS has an signed an exchange treaty, as follows: Up to 17 credits will be recognized per semester including credits earned fro m HUFS. Up to 35 credits from non-HUFS university (any desigated exchange universitie s) in and outside Korea will be recognized during the student's enrollment in HUFS. The maximum period of student exchange engagement that HUFS will recognize is two semesters (excludes short training during vacation or non-enrollment period). 10) Global Dual- Degree Program Students may study at overseas universities that have signed exchange agreement s st ree the with HUFS and receive bachelors degrees from both schools. HUFS is the first university in Korea to introduce such a program. Students who completed the fir two years in HUFS are sent to the University of Delaware, USA, to complete the junior and senior years. Both universities will grant the student bachelors deg in the respective field of major from their universities. Established in 1743, University of Delaware is located in the East Coast of the United States and is one of the top universities in the US.
