Question 3
Rainwater contains dissolved gases and dust. Rivers and lakes contain dissolved
and decaying substances, microorganisms and mud. Seawater contains dissolved
substances, especially common salt. It is highly contaminated with all sorts of pollutants.
It is the most polluted of the three.
Question 4
Balanced Diet
A balanced diet is one which contains the correct proportions of all the
different food requirements of the body. This balanced diet should supply enough
energy for each day’s activities.
A balanced diet consists of the following food requirements:
(a) Carbohydrates and lipids to provide energy for all the activities in the
body.
(b) Proteins to build new tissues for growth and repair damaged or dead
tissues.
(c) Vitamins to prevent diseases and for normal healthy development.
(d) Mineral salt which are essential for normal healthy growth and development.
(e) Fibres as roughage to stimulate peristalsis and prevent constipation.
(f) Water which is needed as the medium for all chemical reactions in the
cells. It helps to transport substances that are needed by the cells and
remove metabolic waste. It also helps to distribute and regulate body heat.

Question 7
A is a parasite
B is a type of fungus
C feeds on living things
D lives on dead plants and animals
Question 8
There are several theories as to why the ocean is usually ‘blue’. Some scientists
believe that when sunlight hits seawater, part of the white light is absorbed and part is
reflected. White light is composed of all the colours in the rainbow. Seawater does not
absorb blue light, so the blue light is reflected outwards. Some scientists believe that
suspended matter in the sea is responsible for its blue colour.

Question 9
empty sand
A B
Figure 2.19
Figure 2.19 shows two similar tins being suspended from the ceiling by
long strings. Tin A is empty while tin B is partially filled with sand. Tin B is
found to be harder to move compared to tin A when both the tins are given a
short sharp push of the same strength. Tin B is also found to continue swinging
over a longer period of time compared to tin A.
A the greater the mass of an object, the easier its ability to start
moving.
B the greater the mass of an object, the easier its ability to stop
moving.
C the larger the mass of an object, the larger its ability to resist
change.
D the larger the mass of an object, the smaller its ability to resist
change.

Question 10
There is always the danger that one day an asteroid might heat the earth. If this
happens it will cause great devastation to the planet.
Question 11
A laser beam inside a CD player reads or processes about 20 000 of these digits every
second, which are then converted back into sound signals.
11 Sound is imprinted on a CD as
A signals B sounds C digits D laser beams
Question 12
Pasteurization of milk improves the storing quality of milk and milk products and
at the same time can destroy some undesirable enzymes and many spoilage bacteria. It
is done by heating every particle of milk or milk product to a specific temperature for a
specified period of time without allowing recontamination of that milk or milk product
during the heat treatment process.

Question 13
Viruses do not reproduce like other organisms. They can only replicate within a
living cell, which is called a host cell. They manufacture replicas of themselves using
parts ‘borrowed’ from the host cells. When they replicate, many viruses kill the host cell.

Question 15
An eclipse of the sun is an occasion when the moon is between the earth
and the sun, so that for a short time you cannot see part or all of the sun. An
eclipse of the moon is an occasion when the earth is between the sun and the
moon, so that for a short time, you cannot see part or all of the moon.
Question 16
Jack Kilby, the American scientist, invented the first monolithic integrated circuit
in 1958. Kilby’s microchip was to the information age as what steam power was to the
Industrial Revolution. It made it possible to incorporate a roomful of equipment into a
device that could be held in the palm of the hand. This drove the space programme,
revolutionized military technology and spawned a multibillion-pound industry.

Question 17
The human brain consists of three main parts; cerebrum, cerebellum and
medulla oblongata. Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. It controls all mental
activities such as thinking, intelligence, memory, learning, reasoning and problem
solving. It is divided into two hemispheres; right and left hemispheres. The right
hemisphere controls all the activities on the left side of the body while the left
hemisphere controls all the activities on the right side of the body. The
Cerebellum is located on the posterior end of the cerebrum. Its surface is folded.
It coordinates the contraction of muscles and controls the equilibrium of the
body. Medulla oblongata is located in front of cerebellum. It links brain to the spinal
cord. It controls and regulates involuntary actions such as the rate of heartbeat,
peristalsis, blood pressure, breathing and the variation in the size of blood
vessels during vasodilation or vasoconstriction.
17 Based on the above extract, which of the following statements are true?
A I only
B I and II

Question 18
Translucent microscopic beads are injected into the bloodstream using a catheter
that is threaded through the patient’s thigh artery up to the uterus. Like tiny marbles
tumbling through a pipe, the beads travel upstream to the fibroid, where they wedge in
the vessel, blocking blood flow. Over time, the fibroid shrinks and falls away.
A thigh treatment
B fibroid treatment
C uterus treatment
D blood clotting treatment
Question 19
Many of our daily actions involve forces. When things are pushed or pulled, a
force is exerted on the object. An example of everyday force at work is pushing a chair.
11
Question 20
The human digestive system comprises of parts of the alimentary canal
which are mouth, stomach, duodenum and illeum. Food is chewed by the teeth into
small particles to increase surface area for the action of enzymes. In the
stomach, gastric glands in the wall of the stomach secrete gastric juice. Gastric
juice contains hydrochloric acid, and the enzymes pepsin and rennin. The
duodenum is the first part of the small intestine. The duodenum does not have
glands to secrete digestive juice. The rest of the small intestine after the
duodenum is the illeum. The walls of the illeum contain many intestinal glands
which secrete intestinal juice. The intestinal juice is alkaline and contains
enzymes to complete the digestion of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.

Question 21
Water can also become unfit for consumption due to leachates, that is
when something leaches from the container into the water. One extreme
example is water in a lead container. Lead leaches into water and contaminates
it. It is important therefore, to ensure that the container in which water is stored
is made from a food grade material to prevent leaching problems. Glass,
stainless steel and some plastics are good examples of such materials.
A drinking
B comprising
C composing

Question 23
Using Folder Guard Pro is a breeze. To enable protection for a folder, simply
right-click on the item and choose access level from the menu. If you do not want to
protect it with the master password, you can select an unlocking password just for that
item. You can protect almost any aspect of the Windows interface, whether you want to
remove the Shut Down and Restart commands from the Start menu, disallow the Log
Off command, disallow the Run command, or prevent users from changing the location
of the Taskbar. You can also lock down nearly any feature in Internet Explorer and
prevent others from browsing any drive.
Question 24
Mercury enters the environment through natural sources such as volcanoes and
the weathering of rocks. From the atmosphere, it is brought down by rain into
ponds, lakes or rivers. Mercury is absorbed by plankton and small fishes, to be
consumed by bigger fishes which finally end up on our dinner plates. Mercury, in its
most toxic form, methyl mercury collects in the muscle and flesh of fish and is toxic
to the human nervous system, the brain.

Question 25
Chocolate is any product based 99 per cent on cocoa solid and / or cocoa fat. Recent
research has shown that cocoa or dark chocolate has health benefits for people. Dark
chocolate is full of flavonoids – epicatechin and gallic acid. These are antioxidants that
help protect blood vessels, promote cardiac health and prevent cancer. Mild
hypertension too can be counteracted. It has been proven that other antioxidant-rich
food such as green and black tea has less flavonoids than dark chocolate.
25 All the statements below indicate evidence that dark chocolate has health
benefits for people except
A it contains high calorific content of saturated fat.
B antioxidants in it helps to avoid cancer
C it has more flavonoids than green tea

Questions 26 – 30 are based on the following passage.
All Infra Red (IR) remote controls use some kind of IR __26__. The remotes
transmit pulses of IR light to send the signal to the receiver. These IR LEDs
transmit light in the frequency range of 30 KHz to 40 KHz. These high
frequencies were __27__ so that other light sources would not interfere with
the receivers ability to correctly receive the transmitted signals. These signals are
___28___ by the IR LED in some type of binary code. It turns out that for most
electronic consumers, this coding is the same. The binary signal varies in length
for both time and bit length. There are only three different ___ 29___ that
manufacturers choose to code these signals. This coding is usually based on
varying the length of ____30____, varying the length of spaces between pulses
or altering the order between spaces or pulses.
26 A track 29 A ways
