Reading 1 -- Thus says the LORD: "Stand firm in justice; do what is right" (Isaiah 56:1, 6-7). Psalm -- O God, let all the nations praise you! (Psalm 67). Reading 2 -- The gifts and the calling of God are unable to be revoked (Romans 11:13-15, 29-32). Gospel -- Recognizing the Canaanite woman's great faith, Jesus told her, "It shall be done as you wish" (Matthew 15:21-28). WHY PRAY? The "foreigners" as Isaiah calls them, the "Gentiles" as Paul calls them, or the "Canaanites" as Matthew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today's readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The question is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of relating to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our relationship with him must be enthusiastic; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fifteenth-century poet, knew what the qualities of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Christians. The poet does not want God to merely "knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend," but also to "break, blow, burn, and make me new" (Holy Sonnets, XIV). It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, "Knock and the door will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today's Gospel, the results will follow. PARISH CLERGY Rev. Peter Quinto, RCJ, Pastor Email: pyquinto@aol.com Rev. QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK

SANCTUARY LIGHT DEDICATION VELADORA

This month of August, the sanctuary lights at the O Street church are lit in honor of the Most Blessed Sacrament for the special intentions of the Ponce Herrera Family.

How open am I to welcoming or helping people who are different from me? How do I get along with others who are different from me or who speak a foreign language?

Send, O Lord, holy apostles into your Church.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE CO-RESPONSABILIDAD DE TESORO August 6 & 7 St. Mary $ 2,852.00 St. Katherine 542.00 Total 3,395.00 Building Fund 1,562.00 May God bless you for your continued support of our church. SECOND COLLECTION Todays second collection is for the Church Building Fund. SIDE BY SIDE "Come to me, all you who labor" (Matthew 11:28). When we are overburdened, weary, confused, or sick Jesus' invitation is music to our ears, except for a small hitch. Jesus says, "Take my yoke upon you" (Matthew 11:29). How does this give rest to our souls? For generations, farmers have yoked young plough animals alongside experienced ones. The experienced animal trains the other by example. An older and weaker animal may likewise be yoked to one in its prime, so the stronger partner takes on the strain. Jesus invites us to take on his yoke so he can walk with us, helping us to do things his way. He promised never to leave us to "pull" alone. When it all gets too much or we lose our way, he will be there beside us--gentle, humble, but infinitely powerful and wise. At times when we are strong, we in turn can yoke ourselves to someone who needs that extra pull to get to firmer ground. LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW Each time you do something for someone else you are "pulling" with them. Offer each good deed you do this day, however small or great, to Jesus. MISSION STATEMENT As faithful disciples of Christ, we, the Catholic Community of St. Mary & St. Katherine, proclaim our threefold mission: to worship God, to share our faith, and to serve those who are in need.

Mission Appeal
THE COMMUNITY OF ST. PAUL We welcome this weekend Mr. Juan Camacho from the Community of St. Paul, a Public Association of the Faithful in the Catholic Church, made up of priests and lay men and women from various countries. They wish to follow St. Pauls example as a tireless evangelizer, itinerant founder of communities, and as a builder of bridges between different cultures. Their main headquarters is in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee (USA) and are also present in Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Spain.

Prayer for a New Bishop

Almighty God, send your Holy Spirit to guide those who will advise the Holy Father in the selection of the next Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno. May he have the zeal of Saint Paul, the priestly gifts of Saint John Vianney, the wisdom of a loving father and brother, and most of all, the heart of your Son, Jesus. We ask that the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us, and Saint Therese, our patroness, join us in this prayer, which we make through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The Holy Fathers August Intentions

General Intention: That the World Youth Day taking place in Madrid may encourage all the young people of the world to root and found their lives in Christ. Missionary Intention: That Christians of the West, docile to the action of the Holy Spirit, may re-encounter the freshness and enthusiasm of their faith.

FAREWELL PORTLUCK FOR DEACON JAY & CHARLENE BIEDERMANN August 14 Join us today at 12:00 noon to show our appreciation for the friendship and ministry of Deacon Jay & Charlene. DEACONS CORNER ALWAYS TRUST IN GOD My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know, if the fact that I think I am following your will, does mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you, and I hope I have that desire to please you in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right roads, even though I may know nothing about it. Therefore, I will trust you always, even though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death, I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. (based on a prayer by Thomas Merton) May God bless you all. Yours in Christ, Deacon Jay and Charlene Biedermann NOTE: Effective September 15, 2011 our new address will be: Risen Christ Parish 65 West Evergreen Drive Kalispell, Montana 59901 Phone 406-752-4219 THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY August 15 This years celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption is not a holy day of obligation since it falls on a Monday. 14 de agosto del 2011

Nuevo Obispo
