ROSTER
It has been a frustrating
preseason for the Camden
Bulldogs.
Anumber of key return-
ing players have been on
the shelf with various mal-
adies, and some may not
be ready when the season
starts Friday at Spring
Valley.
There isnt anything
serious, but were going to
err on the side of caution,
Bulldogs coach Jimmy
Neal said. If nothing else,
the situation has given
some other guys a better
chance to show what they
can do, and a couple have
really taken advantage of
the opportunity.
Camden is coming off a
9-2 season marred by a
first-round playoff exit.
Of course, no one is
happy with the outcome
unless you win it all, but
last years team was great
to be around, said Neal,
who is entering 14th sea-
son as Bulldogs coach.
They really bought in-
to the team concept and
played to the limit of its
ability. This years team is
more talented and has a
chance to have a good sea-
son, but we dont know the
intangible qualities yet.
Offensively, the Bull-
dogs welcome back top
running back JoJo
Brevard and center Jo-
seph Branham, tackle Sel-
wyn Hickmon and guards
Delton Bradford and Ja-
mal Jackson up front.
Branham and Hickman
are three-year starters.
Brevard rushed for 456
yards and six
touchdowns.
The big question is the
passing portion of Cam-
dens spread approach.
The new quarterback is
junior Josh Council, who
is the cousin of former star
Robert Josh Council. He
almost beat out the de-
parted Dillon Morrow for
the staring nod as a soph-
omore last season.
Seniors Darelle Smith
and Tripp Speaks are the
headliners among a most-
ly new receiving cast.
Smith started in the sec-
ondary a year ago, while
Speaks served in a backup
role until an injury late
last season gave him reg-
ular playing time.
On defense, the front
seven should be the
strength. Sheldon Wright
and Darren Chestnut are
three-year starters up
front, and Hamid Mathis
is a standout at outside
linebacker.
The big question is the
secondary, which has no
returning starters to build
around.

ROSTER
After wandering
through the prep football
wilderness for three sea-
sons, Ridge View and
coach Raymond Jennings
are operating with a sense
of urgency.
Weve gone through a
pretty rough stretch lately
for a number of reasons,
said Jennings, entering his
eighth season. Weve had
to deal with smaller num-
bers because of the split
with Blythewood, made
too many mental mis-
takes, have not had
enough commitment to
the program, and last year
we paid the price for play-
ing so many young kids.
In other words, weve
just been trying to survive.
But this year, I think we
start punching back.
Jennings also is chang-
ing his mind-set.
Im coaching like its
my last year, he said.
Were not going to be
married to the two-pla-
toon system. If somebody
can help us at two spots,
theyll play both ways. On
special teams, the 11 fast-
est guys who like to hit will
play.
The goal is to become
relevant again after win-
ning eight of 34 games the
past three seasons. The
youthful Blazers finished
2-9 last season, went 0-5 in
Region 4-4A and missed
the playoffs for the second
year in a row.
The strength of last
years team was defense,
and the unit should be bet-
ter with the return of line-
men Obinna Ntiasagwe
(73 tackles, 10 tackles for
loss, three sacks), Curtis
Bey (48, 10, 2) and Ren-
wick McNeil (27, 5, 3.5),
linebacker Jamarcus
Sharpe (54 tackles), cor-
nerback Chauncey Bess
(60 tackles, five passes
broken up) and safety Bri-
an Butler (49 tackles, two
interceptions).
Jennings realizes the
key to a turnaround hing-
es on the offense scoring
more points. Last season,
the Blazers tallied 10
touchdowns.
The new quarterback is
senior Kyle Baldwin, who
also is a baseball player.
The new-look offensive
line features senior guard
William Reeves and junior
transfers Troy Perrotti and
Armonte Porterfield. The
receiving corps has talent
if not experience, Jen-
nings said.
The proven commodity
on offense is running back
Gary Bradshaw, who ran
for 574 yards and caught
15 passes as a sophomore
Ridge View coach coach Raymond Jennings yells instructions during practice last week.

Spring Valley took posi-
tive steps in 2010 in its first
season under Miles Al-
dridge. The Vikings, who
went 3-30 from 2007-09,
won three games and
stayed close in several
others.
But Aldridge still is not
pleased.
Were still crossing the
commitment bridge, the
former college assistant
coach said. Weve made
some progress but nothing
substantial yet. When our
players are fully committed
to the program and to be-
coming better football
players, then well have a
better learning situation.
We have some good play-
ers, but well only become a
good football team when
we all are doing the right
things.
Execution is the bottom
line.
Our motto is Prove it on
the field, Aldridge said.
You can talk about making
progress, but the results
are out there for everybody
to see. The bottom line is
we still have a way to go. Its
still very much a process
were going through.
The Vikings, who have
not qualified for the Class
4A playoffs since 2006, are
looking for improvement
in all phases, but shoring
up the defense is the top
priority.
We simply gave up too
many big plays, especially
in the passing game, and
we must get better play
from our linebackers, Al-
dridge said. Were not in a
position where we can af-
ford to trade touchdowns
with teams and still hope to
win. Were not good
enough to make up for mis-
takes on a regular basis.
Spring Valleys defense
will be young and unprov-
en. Aldridge said most
starting spots are up for
grabs. The one veteran is
senior outside linebacker
Trent Bryan, who will be
asked to fill a leadership
role.
On offense, the Vikings
welcome back a number of
returning seniors: center
Link Hunter, tackle Rich-
ard Taylor, quarterback
Austin Hill and running
backs Craig Steedley and
Kadrick Thompson.
Juniors Jason Free and
Malik Wilson and sopho-
more John Miller are in the
backfield mix in Aldridges
option-based attack.
Spring Valley finished
3-8 last season, 1-4 in Re-
gion 4-4A play.

ROSTER
After flirting with an op-
tion-based running attack,
Richland Northeast is re-
turning to the spread of-
fense it abandoned in
2010.
The change last year
was based on personnel,
and this year we have the
kind of kids again you
have to have to run the
spread, Cavaliers coach
Jay Frye said. We have a
big, good-looking quarter-
back who is a strong run-
ner and has a good arm,
and we have some good,
athletic receivers.
This offense isnt new
to most of these kids, so
the transition shouldnt be
much of a problem. If we
can overcome a little inex-
perience at a few spots on
defense, we have a chance
to have a pretty good
season.
The Cavaliers posted a
7-5 record last fall and ad-
vanced to the state play-
offs for the 12th time in 13
tries under Frye.
Offensively, RNE has a
solid base up front with the
return of tackle James
Lewis and guards Chris
Miller and Decovian
Mobley.
Junior quarterback A.C.
Whaley is glad to be back
in comfortable territory
running the spread.
The offense we ran last
season really did not suit
A.C.s skills, Frye said.
The receiving corps
headliner could be senior
Chavarius Curry-Felix,
who played wing back a
year ago. Frye expects
Curry-Felix to be the pri-
mary deep threat.
The running game is in
good shape with the return
of senior Darius Paulk,
who has two 1,000-yard
seasons on his resume.
Last year, he ran for 1,032
yards and nine touch-
downs on 155 carries.
The defense will set up
in a 3-4 for the most part,
and 11 seniors are likely to
receive regular playing
time.
The anchors up front
are three-year starter
Steve Davis at nose guard
and Desmond Joyner at
one end spot. Davis had 61
tackles and eight sacks a
year ago, while Joyner
posted 56 tackles and 3.5
sacks.
Top linebacker Ryan
Quarles has graduated,
but Antwan Glover (42
tackles) and Rorlanda Gil-
more (31) return to form
the new foundation.
The star in the second-
ary is three-year starter
Chris Reeder, who was
second on the team in
tackles last season with 91
and had three intercep-
tions from his free safety
position.
Chris is a prospect and
should have a super sea-
son, Frye said.
Richland Northeast is returning to the spread offense, which better suits the skills of quarterback A.C. Whaley.

ROSTER
Lugoff-Elgins first sea-
son in Class 4A was a study
in contrasts.
The Demons got off to a
1-5 start but rebounded in
region play going 4-1
to earn a share of the 6-4A
championship. But the eu-
phoria ended when L-E
suffered a first-round play-
off loss at home to Ashley
Ridge another team
making its 4A debut in
2010.
Overall, I think we did a
lot of good things, coach
Scott Jones said. If youd
have told me five years ago
that we would not only be
playing in 4A but winning
a region championship in
our first year, I wouldnt
have believed it. Thats the
first title weve won here in
29 years, so it was a pretty
big deal.
Once more, the Demons
must adapt to the gradua-
tion of a large senior class,
but Jones is not
concerned.
Weve been in this situ-
ation for the past few
years, so its really no big
thing, said the coach, who
is entering his 10th season.
We have another big
senior class ready to take
its turn. This one is one of
the best senior classes
weve ever had. They
know what its like to com-
pete at this level, and I
think we can challenge for
a region title again if we
can avoid injuries to some
key players.
Offensively, the Demons
like to keep teams guess-
ing with different offen-
sive sets the wing-T and
the spread. But with the re-
turn of two standout run-
ning backs and no sea-
soned quarterback or re-
ceivers on the roster, the
emphasis figures to be on
the running game.
Seniors Zach Connell
and Malik Young are the
proven players men in the
backfield. Connell missed
half of last season with an
injury but became a force
upon his return, running
for 449 yards and four
touchdowns while averag-
ing 6.5 yards per carry.
Young had 394 yards and
three touchdowns and av-
eraged 4.9 yards.
Senior Dalton Simons
and sophomore Shon Bel-
ton are dueling at
quarterback.
They bring different
things to the table, but
both are good runners,
Jones said. Its too close
to call now, but no matter
who wins the job, the other
guy will be playing
somewhere.
Nose guard Ladricus
Turner, linebacker Markus
Kershaw and safety Josh
Ruiz are the key players on
defense. Connell also ex-
cels at linebacker, but his
role could be limited by his
offensive workload.
Lugoff-Elgin coach Scott Jones talks to fullback Zach Connell
during a scrimmage with Richland Northeast last week.

ROSTER
Reggie Kennedy has
been coaching for more
than two decades, but the
new Blythewood football
coach is rejuvenated now
that his duties as athletics
director are off his plate.
This is the first time
since Ive been a head
coach that I can concen-
trate strictly on football,
and thats one of the main
reasons why I took the
job, said Kennedy, who
guided successful pro-
grams at Kingstree, Or-
angeburg-Wilkinson and
Fairfield Central.
The past few years
were a grind. The adminis-
trative demands took a lit-
tle of the fun out of coach-
ing for me, but Im feeling
recharged, like Im 21
again.
Kennedy, who turned a
long dormant Kingstree
program into a playoff fix-
ture and returned Fairfield
Central to contender sta-
tus during two stints in
Winnsboro, takes over a
team that has done little
since going 24-1 and win-
ning a Class 3A state
championship in its first
two seasons. Since moving
up to 4A, the Bengals have
posted a combined 17-17
record the past three
seasons.
Kennedy, who used to
be a wing-T disciple, will
install the spread offense
he has embraced since
leaving Kingstree.
I coached against
Blythewood the past few
seasons, and the one thing
that struck me is the team
did not seem to have an of-
fensive identity, he said.
That wont be the case
now. Were a spread team,
and I think the kids are re-
sponding to it.
The transition should be
smooth with Kennedy hav-
ing a veteran quarterback
and a star receiver in tow.
Demetric Gray is back un-
der center after passing for
1,268 yards and 12 touch-
downs a year ago, while se-
nior receiver Damar Hall
caught 46 balls for 836
yards and 11 touchdowns.
Kennedy expects Jerrod
Davis and James Williams
to share time at running
back. Davis is a slashing
runner who tallied 241
rushing yards and caught
17 passes in 2010.
But Kennedy said the
teams strength should be
the defense, with nine se-
niors slated to start. Strong
safety Kyle Edwards, cor-
nerbacks Zamardre Wing-
field and Aubrey Pressley
and linebackers JoJo
Johnson and Jalen Ham-
mett lead the way.
Edwards led the team in
tackles (110) and intercep-
tions (four) last season.
Damar Hall caught 46 passes for 836 yards and 11 touchdowns for Blythewood last season.
