Living the Lectionary 10th Sunday After Pentecost

Season: Pentecost Week of August 21st What is this Faith?: The Faith to Proclaim
About the Season: The season of Pentecost is a season of being given the gifts of God for the purpose of living out His mission on earth as His Body. Its color, green, implies the growth of the Church both personally and as a Body through the work of the Holy Spirit.

About this Sunday: Faith is seen clearly in our willingness to proclaim the truth that we know. A husband cries out, I know she loves me, of his wife. Similarly, the Christian church cries out, I know Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and we show our faith in that proclamation. Reflecting on the Readings: Isaiah 51:1-6 Listen to me Isaiah, speaking in the inspiration of the Spirit, says Listen to me, and confesses who God is, what He has done and what He will do. What would you say after Listen to me while I tell you about Jesus? Psalm 138 Proclaiming Thanks In this Psalm, we see that even thanksgiving is a proclamation of what God has done for us. How have you proclaimed who God is in your thanks lately? Romans 12:1-8 Proclaiming with Your Body - Paul shows us that our whole being: thoughts, action, mind and body all proclaim to who Christ is. How have you proclaimed Him with your body and your actions this week? Matthew 16:13-20 You are the Messiah Peter faithfully proclaims Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God, even though others think differently of Jesus. Who do you say Jesus is? Law and Gospel: Law: We live in a world that doesnt seem to get who Jesus is most of the time, and if were honest, were a little confused as well sometimes, and our faithful proclamation is muddied by our ignorance and doubt. Gospel: When we cry out, Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, Jesus promises that we are included in His Church that not even the gates of hell will prevail against. Living the Lectionary Ideas:

Learn: Learn about who people say Jesus is. Look up the theological term Christology, this term means the study of who and what The Christ (which means Messiah) is. Do: Proclaim what you believe somehow and somewhere. See how people respond and react to your proclamation. Live: Develop an attitude of giving thanks to God for things that others normally attribute to luck. Can you say I was blessed instead of I was lucky?
