18 August Events At Chanco As Police Block Students Vigil As seen by Fearless Generation 16 August 2011: Civil society organizations

announce cancellation of August 17 n ational demonstrations and the vigil until further notice. Chanco students agree to be on the streets to the University Office from Thursday to force UNIMA to r einstate the four fired academic union leaders Jessie Kabwira Kapasula, Garton K amchedzera, Blessings Chinsinga and Franz Amin so classes can begin in earnest. 16 August 2011: Chanco students notify the police that they were going to conduc t a vigil at the university office on 18th August 2011. Police accept to escort them. 17 August 2011: Students agree to gather at 8 a.m of Thursday 18 July at the Arc h for the beggining of a slow but not silent procession to the University Office . To go to Zomba zero then branch off into the M5 road taking the eastern direct ion before connecting with the road leading to the University offices. There, a petition was supposed to be served to the Vice Chancellor Dr. Fabiano. After that they would engage themselves in various activities to keep busy. Food would be s erved right at the University Office. To leave University Office for campus at 5 p.m 17 August 2011: Some bad news: Police Commissioner, after instructions from abov e, refuse the peaceful vigils saying the situation is still tense in the country . SUCC (Students Union of Chancellor College) calls for an emergency General Ass embly at 6 a.m, 18 August, at Cafe C. It is hoped SUCC will use all legal means to challenge the unfortunate decision by the police. 18 August 2011: SUCC engages its lawyers to fight the unfortunate decision by th e Police. 8.30am: Students start gathering at the Arch. 8.30am: Police vehicle full of police officers heading to Chanco. 8.30: Police officers take their positions, some hiding in the bush in a full mi litary style. 8.50am More than 100 heavily armed police officers block more than 2000 Chanco s tudents on their way to the University Office 9.00am: Anytime teargas will pollute the air. 10.00am: The battle has bgun. Police fire teargas after their colleague is sever ely beaten by students. One student is arrested. Police use live bullets, a bull et negative is found by one of the students. 10.30: Running battles along Chirunga road. Teargas everywhere. 11.20: The Party venue shifts from University Offices to Chanco Library Quadrang le, they are singing anti-wa Mutharika songa and dancing. 11.30 Running battles again between students and Police. 11.40: Disgruntled students smash a car wind screen belonging to a pompous lectu rer as he forcefuly tried to cross over the roadblock mounted by the students at the arch! 12.00: Arrested students released, one female student severely beaten.
