SAN DIEGO

Work Party!

Pastors Corner ~
THE AUTHORITY OF THE POPE AND THE CHURCH Todays Gospel is one of the biblical proofs for Papal authority in the Catholic Church. Peter is considered the First Pope to whom Jesus entrusted the keys, which stand for authority and power. Many artists portray St. Peter as an old man with a long beard, standing at the pearly gate of heaven and holding a bunch of keys, with a rooster next to him. Of course, this is just an artists interpretation. But the keys, the power to bind and to lose, are actually powers given to the Church, through the leadership of the Pope, to continue the mission and work of Jesus Christ, the real but invisible Head of the Church. These powers are functions of Christ, given to the Church, and they are: PRIESTLY the priest represents humankind before God, offering prayers and sacrifices, interceding on their behalf. Jesus Christ is the High Priest who offered a perfect sacrifice to the Father on the cross. Priestly function includes the sanctification of Gods people through the power of the sacraments and other sacred actions of the Church. PROPHETIC the prophetic role refers to being the mouthpiece of God and the Teacher of the faith and morals based on the Word of God. The prophet is also the evangelizer and bearer of Good News of Gods love and mercy for humanity. KINGLY this is the power to serve and govern, as Christ is King who sits at the right hand of the Father with all the authority and power over heaven and earth. Christs kingdom is not earthly; that is why He has a different way of serving and governing, Himself being the Messiah that serves by giving His life for the salvation of all. The Church preaches a kingdom of peace, justice, joy and love. His Kingship comes into our life by us living out the values of Christ on earth. The Mens Club and Mens Faith Group are sponsoring another Work Party on Saturday, August 27th. Kick-off time is 8:00 a.m. Lunch will be served afterwards. All adult women and men welcome!
