its a weighty word. But promises are readily made and easily broken. We are not judged by the promises we make. We are judged by the promises we keep.
SJRs promise to its students is that they will be part of one of Canadas pre-eminent academic training grounds for young minds, a school that embodies western Canadas unique and time-honoured values of hard, honest work, humility, ingenuity, courage and creativity. We can never waver in our commitment to that promise and that is why we must constantly look ahead, imagine the future and plan for it.

sJr students are the future leaders of the world. We have to look no further than our alumni to know that the education these students are getting is the foundation for success. the better we are, the better they will be.

global warming. political instability. poverty. these are just a few of the many concerns we have about our collective future. sJrs job is to prepare students to confront these complex challenges with a view to improving them. if we succeed, the world succeeds.

the new strategic plan

We are making a long-term pledge to our students and our community that would strengthen SJR and anticipate the tools our students need today to navigate a complicated, fast-paced and challenging world. We began by asking questions, talking to people, consulting the experts, and picking the brains of the entire SJR family alumni, parents, students, teachers and staff. There is an abundance of talent and expertise right at our fingertips and we intend to keeping tapping into that as our plan progresses. Its one thing to make the promise, but without the plan to fulfill it we wouldnt get very far. Thats why so much time and energy has gone into creating this Strategic Plan. We have built a roadmap for achieving some very important goals that affect not only the future of the School, but the future of every student in it.

if we apply this as a measure to all of our activities, from what goes on in the classroom to the food in the cafeteria; if we remind ourselves every day that nothing short of the best is the goal for that day; if the whole community says that only the highest standards in behaviour and professionalism will do no matter what our role is in the school, well have achieved what is intended by this value.

opening the windows on the world, spreading our wings, unleashing our imaginations these are the ways we inspire students to pursue their dreams and to grow into the compassionate, creative, responsible adults they will become. We must offer an environment that embraces diversity in all its forms. We must provide an opportunity for growth whether in the classroom or in the community, on the playing field or in the art studio in every part of sJr, there must live a chance to discover.

We intend to focus on the careful management of our own resources, of the environment we share, of the rights and needs of others here at home as well as globally. stewardship will be the path to taking care of ourselves, our school and our communities.

A great school must be able to look backward as well as forward. We must take from our ancestors the valuable lessons theyve taught us and stand on the shoulders of the innovation and intelligence that formed the foundations of this school. But we must also have eyes squarely focused on the future. And what a view that is. At the current pace of change, nothing we understand today will be what our graduates will inherit tomorrow. so it is more imperative than ever that we constantly study, discuss, research and imagine what that world might look like. What are the big innovations, what are the issues gripping the planet, where is technology taking us and what do we as educators need to be doing to anticipate a world thats impossible to imagine? We must somehow, imagine the possible.
