High school dropout rates
decrease by 45 percent across
nation
Mecosta, Osceola counties still have
higher rate than Michigan, national
average
MICHIGAN – While more students are
staying in high school and earning their
diplomas, the drop out rate in Mecosta
and Osceola counties is still higher than
national and state averages.
Across the country, the high school drop
out rate has decreased by 45 percent
from 2000 to 2009, according to Kids
Count Data 2011 from the Annie E. Casey
Foundation.
In Mecosta County, 41 students, or 7.8
percent, had dropped out of high school
in 2009. This is a 42.2-percent decrease
from the 71 students who dropped out
in 2008. Osceola County has a slightly
higher dropout rate, 8.5 percent. This
means 39 students in Osceola County left
high school without degrees in 2009, a
17-percent decrease from the number of
dropouts in 2008.
“Students are starting to understand better
that without a high school diploma or a
GED, the job market is such that they won’t
be able to find work,” said Crossroads
Charter Academy Superintendent Lynn
Gullekson. In the past, students may not
have been as aware of how competitive
the job market is, he added.
Michigan ranks 22nd of the 50 states
with its number of teens not in school and
without a high school degree. New Jersey
and New Hampshire tied for No. 1 with
only 3 percent of their students ages 16
to 19 leaving school without a diploma.
Nevada had the highest drop out rate at
11 percent.
Nationwide, 6 percent of teens dropped
out of high school in 2009, which matches
Michigan’s rate.
The drop out rate reflects a decrease of
40 percent in Michigan from 2000 to 2009.
While the number of teens dropping out
of high school in Mecosta and Osceola
counties has decreased in recent years,
their percentage is still not as low as the
state average.
Alternative high schools and summer
school programs are common methods
of helping students who may struggle in
traditional classes to still meet high school
graduation requirements.
Crossroads is the only district within the
Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School
District that does not offer an alternative
high school program. Crossroads’ summer
school program, which draws 35 to 50
students each year, typically enrolls two
or three seniors seeking credits to earn
their diplomas.
Some students, Gullekson said, come
to Crossroads after struggling to pass
classes at other schools.
“I think we have a reputation that we try to
provide some support that other schools
don’t,” he said. “Sometimes it works, and
some students are just struggling.”
Crossroads provides after school tutoring,
in-class help from paraprofessionals and
online courses to help students who have
difficulty in certain subject areas.
“We try to make accommodations for
students to earn their credits with summer
school, even after their cohort graduates,”
Gullekson said.
Evart Public Schools Superintendent
Howard Hyde credited the district’s
alternative high school and summer
school program with helping lower the
drop out rate.
“Hopefully, we’re catching some kids (in
the alternative high school),” Hyde said.
“I’m happy we improved our numbers.
It’s something we are constantly working
toward.”

alternative high school and adult education
programs last year. Typically, about 40
students enroll in the alternative high
school.
For some struggling students, graduating
high school is simply a matter of adjusting
their priorities and trying harder to come
to class and participate, which can come
with age and maturity, Hyde said.
At Big Rapids Public Schools, the anti-
bullying policy, alternative high school
and summer school program all could
contribute to a lower drop out rate, said
curriculum director Deb Tyson.
“We’ve tried to get really personal with the
kids,” Tyson said. “We want students to
feel safe at school, not rejected by their
peers.”
New Directions High School, BRPS’
alternative high school, graduates a class
of eight to 20 students each year. More
than 20 students, from BRPS as well as
other districts, attend summer school at
Big Rapids High School every year.
BRHS has made it a priority to maintain
unique electives and after school activities,
which also provide incentive for students
to stay in school, Tyson said.
Michigan’s declining drop out rate coincides
with tougher graduation requirements.
Both graduation and drop out statistics are
based on four-year rates that are affected
by students entering and leaving a district
for a variety of reasons.
In 2006, former Gov. Jennifer Granholm
signed the Michigan Merit Curriculum,
which increased regulations on classes
required to graduate from high school.
“As we get a handle on (MMC), we can
identify kids who are off track,” Tyson said.
“We specifically concentrate on getting
them back on track.”
The Class of 2011 was the first class under
Michigan Merit Curriculum for its entire
high school career. All districts within the
MOISD also met the state’s goal of 80
percent graduation rate for the Class of
2011.
“We are raising standards, and we’re
supporting students to reach those,”
Gullekson said. “We’re creating more
support to help students who struggle in
those rigorous areas.”
Evart was the only district in the MOISD to
improve its four-year graduation rate rising
from 70 percent to 76.4 percent in 2009-
10 to 2010-11, according to the Michigan
Department of Education.
Reed City Area Public Schools had the
highest graduation rate, 83.7 percent, in
the MOISD for 2010-11. Its graduation rate
was the same in 2009-10. Chippewa Hills
School District has the lowest graduation
rate of 73.3 percent for 2010-11, down
from 75.3 percent in 2009-10.
“Schools are doing their part, and I
think students deserve some credit too,”
Gullekson said. “There’s more motivation
there (for them to earn a high school
degree).”

(NewsUSA) - Lia Lee, the child of
Hmong-speaking parents, died as much
from miscommunication as from illness.
When Lia was a few months old, she
started experiencing seizures. Twice,
she was misdiagnosed with pneumonia
because her parents couldn’t describe
her symptoms to her doctors. When she
was finally diagnosed, she was prescribed
a complex regime of medications that
her parents couldn’t understand how to
administer. With doctors and parents
unable to communicate, Lia experienced
a grand mal seizure.
Unfortunately, the Lees’ experience is
not uncommon. According to the 2000
Census, over 21 million Americans speak
English less than “very well,” and 22.5
percent of Asian and Pacific Islander
speakers either don’t speak English well
or can’t speak it at all.
Some people have family members to help
them, but that can lead to other problems.
If a husband acts as an interpreter for his
wife, the doctor will have difficulty asking
her about spousal abuse. Even when
family members mean well, they are not
medical experts and may mistranslate
or fail to report every symptom that the
patient describes.
In a 2003 study, researchers analyzed 13
patient-doctor encounters that involved
an ad hoc translator, such as a nurse,
social worker or siblings. On average,
these translators made 31 mistakes
per encounter. Seventy-seven percent
of these errors could have had clinical
consequences.
Hospitals can help avoid mistakes by
using medical interpreters, or trained
professionals who facilitate communication
between patients and doctors. Hospitals
are required to offer interpreters, but it’s
an unfunded mandate: only 13 states offer
Medicaid reimbursement for interpreters.
If healthcare reform truly aims to
improve patient care, it must improve
communication. Reimbursing hospitals
for providing medical interpreters will not
only save lives, but also prevent needless
errors and reduce overall costs.
“In addition to improving quality of care
and patient safety, language services
reimbursement would alleviate the
financial burden faced by hospitals with
a large population of Limited English
Proficient patients.” said Mursal Khaliif,
senior director of multilingual services at
Cambridge Health Alliance, a Harvard
University Medical School Teaching

“A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) can
provide the same amount of light as an
incandescent by using only one-quarter of
the electricity,” explains Joe Rey-Barreau,
education consultant for the ALA and an
associate professor at the University of
Kentucky’s School of Interior Design.
“One of the great myths regarding lighting
today is that the federal government is
‘banning’ incandescent lighting,” Rey-
Barreau says. “This is false. Incandescent
lighting is not being banned. The new
legislation is only affecting the standard
100-watt incandescent bulb, which will
no longer be sold beginning in 2012.
However, an incandescent bulb that uses
only 72 watts will replace it. This new bulb
uses halogen incandescent technology
to produce a more efficient incandescent
bulb.”
Install ceiling fans
Install a ceiling fan in frequently occupied
rooms. Ceiling fans use a fraction of the
electricity of an AC unit. Therefore, the
thermostat can be raised six degrees --
say, to 78 degrees -- and make a room
feel as comfortable as if the ambient
temperature were really 72 degrees.
Utilize lighting controls
Lighting controls are an excellent option
for saving energy. It is not necessary to
invest in a comprehensive control system
where the entire house is rewired. There
are simple and less-expensive methods
for controlling light to save energy, such
as motion sensors, photocells that
operate according to light levels, timers
and dimmers.

become more efficient than ever before.

Financial Literacy Lessons:
A Family Affair
(NewsUSA) - Studies have shown that
parents have the greatest influence on
their children’s financial habits, and now,
more than ever, mothers and fathers are
taking the primary role in educating kids
about healthy money management.
“Most financial experts agree there is a
need for financial discussions among
families to avoid or soften potential future
economic upheavals,” says Suzanne
Poole, executive vice president, retail
sales strategy, TD Bank. “According to a
recent financial literacy poll by TD Bank,
only 50 percent of families report having
weekly conversations with their children,
even though there are easy ways to
incorporate tips about money in everyday
conversation.”
TD Bank surveyed 1,637 consumers
within the Northeast as well as in Florida
and Washington, D.C. With a little more
than half of families having weekly
conversations with their children about
money matters, it’s important to keep it
simple, be honest, and make it fun. Now,
let the lessons begin:
Be Open: According to the survey, a
majority of parents agree that honesty is
the best policy when talking to children
about household finances. Perhaps as a
result of the recent economic struggles,
the survey found that 55 percent of families
say they are talking with their children
more often about money.
Set Savings Goals: TD Bank’s survey
showed that teaching children to save with
a piggy bank is one of the most popular
money-related activities. That being said,
only one in three parents reports setting
a savings goal. If your child is saving,
help them set goals and define the steps

needed to reach them.
Establish a Family Budget: Despite the
evidence that better budgeting can lead to
saving, the survey shows that 47 percent
of families are still not following or creating
a monthly budget. Financial websites,

budget templates to develop a financially
fit family budget.
Enroll in Financial Literacy Programs:
Financial literacy can be a daunting task
for parents, but there are educational
tools and programs that can help with this
process. For example, TD Bank offers
an interactive financial literacy program
for grades K-12 called “WOW!Zone.” It is

com/wowzone and offers advice and
resources for parents to teach children
and teens about money, savings and

Get the Facts About Cataracts
and Surgery
(NewsUSA) - Though cataracts are the
leading cause of vision loss worldwide,
myths persist about their cause and
treatment. Cataracts affect nearly 22
million Americans age 40 and older. By
age 80, more than half of all Americans will
have cataracts, according to the National
Eye Institute.
“Cataracts are not preventable, but they
are treatable,” said Richard P. Mills, MD,
“and the best way to ensure vision stays
healthy for a lifetime is to schedule a visit
with an ophthalmologist. More than 90
percent of the people who have cataract
surgery regain useful vision.”
As the eye’s lens, located behind the pupil,
grows older, its cells die and accumulate.
The result is blurred vision and “fuzzy”
images. Eye injuries, certain medications
and diseases such as diabetes are also
known to cause cataracts. In the early
stages, stronger lighting and eyeglasses
may lessen vision problems caused
by cataracts. But at a certain point,
cataract surgery -- the most frequently
performed operation in the country -- may
be necessary. There are four common
cataract myths to dispel:
* MYTH 1: Eye drops can prevent or
dissolve cataracts.
o FACT: The Food and Drug
Administration has not approved any
drops that cure or delay cataracts. Since
cataracts are not a substance, there is
nothing for the drops to dissolve.
* MYTH 2: Close-up tasks like reading or
sewing make cataracts worse.
o FACT: Cataracts are not caused by
how people use their eyes. However,
cataracts likely become more noticeable
during close work. One sign of a cataract
is the need for more light to do the same
activities.
* MYTH 3: Cataracts are reversible.
o FACT: The lens naturally clouds as it
ages; this process is unavoidable and
irreversible. But its progress can be slowed
by quitting smoking, eating a balanced
diet and wearing sunglasses.

you have cataracts, you may qualify for
a free eye exam. The eye exams are
provided by a program called EyeCare
America, an organization that works with
nearly 7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists
across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Visit
