IMO NO
X
EMISSIONS AND WRTSIL ENGINES
The exhaust emissions regulations in Annex VI of the MARPOL 73/78
convention that entered into force on 19 May 2005 are now referred to as
IMO Tier I. In October 2008, the Marine Environment Protection Committee
(MEPC) of IMO adopted amendments to the MARPOL Annex VI regulations.
These specify further NO
X
emission limits to be known as IMO Tier II and Tier
X
III. Under IMO Tier II, the NO
X
emission limits for engines installed in ships
X
constructed on or after 1 January 2011 will be reduced, according to a speed-
dependent function, about 20% from IMO Tier I levels (see chart). All Wrtsil
engines included in this booklet comply with the NO
X
limits specied by IMO
X
Tier II.
The emission levels have been lowered largely by reducing the maximum
combustion temperatures. This has involved a combination of measures: Early
inlet valve closing (Miller timing), optimization of the combustion chamber, and
optimization of the fuel injection equipment. This has reduced the emissions
with only a marginal decrease in efciency, or none at all.
11
Under IMO Tier III, the NO
X
emission limit for engines installed in ships
X
constructed on or after 1 January 2016 will be reduced, according to a speed-
dependent function, 80% from IMO Tier I levels (see chart), when the ship is
operating in a designated Emission Control Area. Outside designated Emission
Control Areas Tier II limits apply.
Wrtsil will adapt its engines to comply with the new upcoming NO
X
emission regulations.
ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATIONS

WRTSIL DUAL FUEL ENGINES WITH
SUPERIOR ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE
Gas operation gives a great environmental advantage compared to diesel
mode seen from the exhaust gas emission point of view.
When operating the engine in gas mode the exhaust emissions are
extremely low. In gas mode operation, the NO
X
emissions are over 80% below
X
the current IMO level, complying with the upcoming IMO Tier III standard.
The SO
X
emissions are almost negligible and the amount of emitted particles
X
is less than 10% compared to a conventional marine diesel engine running
on diesel. Further, gas operation in general generates 2530% lower CO
2
emissions compared to diesel operation.
The gas engine is a clean, reliable and high efciency engine. The engine
is a perfect solution when the target is to achieve low exhaust emissions in a
cost efcient way.
WRTSIL COMMON-RAIL
Wrtsil common-rail engines, branded as RT-ex for low-speed engines and
EnviroEngine for medium-speed engines, offer distinct benets to ship owners.
One of the major benets is smokeless operation at all engine load levels,
also at low load and low revolution speed. The lower running costs of Wrtsil
common-rail engines derive from reduced maintenance and lower part-load
fuel consumption. Precise control of injection and high injection pressures at
all speeds give steady running at very low running speeds without smoking,
down to 1012% of nominal speed for low-speed engines. Particular attention
has been paid to making the system reliable. The common-rail concept also
has inherent redundancy, adding to reliability and safety.
The design of the common-rail system is optimized for new engines but it
can also be retrotted to existing engines.
WRTSIL LOW LOSS CONCEPT
The Wrtsil Low Loss Concept (LLC) is a specially developed and patented
diesel electric system. One of the LLC features is reduced electrical losses
compared to conventional diesel electric systems. This saves fuel and reduces
exhaust gas emissions. The LLC obviates the need for propulsion transformers
with associated electric losses. Results from full scale measurements
have shown total electric losses in the range of 6% for the LLC, which is
signicantly less than in conventional systems.

13
ENERGOPAC
Fuel savings and a reduction in emissions can be achieved with Wrtsil
Energopac. This is an integrated propulsion and steering system which
increases the propulsion efciency, but does not compromise on manoeuvring
characteristics and comfort levels. Energopac includes a special propeller
design, a sophisticated high-lift ap rudder equipped with an efciency bulb
and a special fairing cap connected to the propeller hub. The bulb and fairing
cap work together to streamline the water ow behind the propeller while the
twisted leading edge and rudderap reduce rudder drag. Depending on the
specic application, the power savings and emissions control with Wrtsil
Energopac may result in operational savings of up to 9%.
WRTSIL HIGH EFFICIENCY NOZZLE
The Wrtsil high efciency nozzles differ from conventional nozzles through
a special rounded leading edge and S-shaped outer surface. Since their
introduction with small propellers (less than 3.5 m diameter), several hundred
have been applied to a wide variety of vessels. Full-scale tests on several
vessels indicate an improved bollard pull in the order of 710%.
ENVIROSEALS: OCEANGUARD AND AIRGUARD
Any oil loss to the environment from a ships stern shaft sealing system is
unacceptable. Enviroseals offer pollution-free sealing systems with a proven
track record on all types of vessels. Enviroseals are equally suited to retrotting
on existing standard seal installations or, as is now common, to be specied by
owners for new-buildings.
Wrtsils Enviroseal systems prevent both the leakage of bearing oil
into the sea and the ingress of water into the bearing system. They ensure
continuous operation between planned maintenance periods, with no
unplanned dry dockings for emergency repairs.
The Oceanguard system is unique in that it enables all potentially polluting
oil to be contained within the vessel, using a double barrier comprising a
combination of face seal and lip seal technologies and a low-pressure void
space. This sealing system is ideal for use on cruise ships and ferries.
The Airguard system, with its air-induced controlled pressure components,
ensures the seal is a truly anti-pollution lip seal. This sealing system is ideal
for use on LNG carriers, container ships, bulk carriers and many other vessel
types.
14
HIGH-EFFICIENCY WASTE HEAT RECOVERY (WHR)
Waste heat recovery is an effective technology for simultaneously cutting
exhaust gas emissions and reducing fuel consumption. High-Efciency Waste
Heat Recovery plants can be installed with Wrtsil engines. This enables up
to 12% of the main engine shaft power to be recovered as electrical power
for use as additional ship propulsion power and for shipboard services. These
WHR plants thus cut exhaust gas emissions and deliver fuel savings of up to
12%.
Steam based WHR has already been successfully tted in several
installations to Wrtsil RT-ex low-speed marine engines. In the WHR plant,
a turbo-generator combines input from a steam turbine and an exhaust gas
power turbine to generate electrical power while steam from the economizer
is available for ship service heating. Steam based WHR is recommended for
vessels with high installed power.
For vessels with lower installed power the excess heat can be recovered
with an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). A non-ammable and non-toxic media
is used to utilize exhaust gas heat and also lower grade heat sources like HT
water from the engines. Due to the exibility of an ORC plant, the system can
achieve the same efciency as in the steam cycle.

WRTSIL SCRUBBER
As part of the revised and adopted Marpol Annex VI, new limitations on
SO
X
emissions have been introduced by IMO; particulate matter emissions
X
reduction is part of the same regulation. Particulate matters are considered to
be simultaneously reduced with SO
X
.
The regulation has different SO
X
limitations and time of implementation:
X
tighter limitations will be applied earlier in emission control areas, while the
global sulphur cap will be signicantly reduced by 2020 or 2025 (in case of
postponement of the implementation year).
There are no restrictions in the use of high sulphur heavy fuel oil and
abatement technologies are allowed for achieving compliance.
Exhaust gas scrubbing is a cost effective alternative to low sulphur content
fuels for reducing SO
X
emissions. Wrtsil has developed a feasible solution,
X
both for new installations and as a retrot to existing ships. Combustion units can
be diesel engines of any type or application, 2-stroke or 4-stroke.
The SO
X
removal efciency of the Wrtsil FW scrubber system is over
X
97%, making it possible to operate with 3.5% sulphur fuel and still comply
with the 0.1% sulphur fuel limit. Wrtsil FW (fresh water) scrubber concept
is based on a closed loop system, using fresh water with caustic soda (NaOH)
addition to the scrubbing water.
There are different scrubber congurations available. Main Stream
Scrubber is designed to be installed in the main exhaust gas stream of an
individual diesel engine. Integrated Scrubber is based on design where one
single unit can clean the exhaust gases of several main and auxiliary engines
and oil-red boilers onboard. The scrubber system is equipped with an
automation system for operation, emissions monitoring and safety control.
Wrtsil FW scrubber system has been approved by classication societies.
16
WRTSIL NOR
Wrtsil has developed a NO
X
reducer (NOR) based on selective, catalytic
X
reduction technologies. The programme covers Wrtsils medium-speed
engine portfolio. The reduction in NO
X
emissions is 8595%.
X
The size of the NOR is optimized in terms of performance and costs.
The main components of the SCR installation are the reactor, which is the
core of the installation, a reagent pumping unit, a dosing unit for controlling
the reagent ow, and an injection unit for feeding the reagent into the duct.
The dosing unit is provided with a dedicated control cabinet. An emission
monitoring system is available as option.

WRTSIL OILY WATER SEPARATOR
The Wrtsil OWS M-series oily water separator gives the operator effective
control over all bilge and sludge media as well as over any discharges
made into the sea. The technology behind the Wrtsil OWS M-series is a
combination of optimized traditional methods and innovative new solutions.
The separator consists of a four-stage, emulsion-breaking unit, where each
stage handles one key component of the sludge and bilge mix. It can handle
input ows with an oil content of between 0 and 100%, making it the most
versatile separator on the market.
All Wrtsil M-series units have successfully passed USCG / IMO type
approval in accordance with 46 CFR 162.050 and MEPC.107(49). The
amount of oil in water after treatment is guaranteed to be less than 5 ppm.

WRTSIL BILGEGUARD
Wrtsil BilgeGuard is a fully automated, bilge discharge monitoring system
which constantly oversees and monitors the oil content in all discharges
overboard. Should the oil content rise above the set limit, the ow will be re-
reouted back to the bilge tank. The system logs the discharge quantity and oil
content as well as time and location of the ship. All data is stored in memory
for later retrieval.
The system is enclosed in a locked, tamper-proof cabinet and all accesses
are logged in memory. For both crew members and ship management, the
Wrtsil BilgeGuard provides a priceless safety net that makes the compliance
with applicable regulations evident.

500i. The Wrtsil BWT 500i is a complete ballast water treatment system
designed for a ow rate of 500 m
3
/h (several units can be installed in
parallel for higher ow rates). Wrtsil BWT 500i is based on ltration and UV
disinfection treatment. The treatment system is unique because the actual
system incorporates both lter and the UV reactor in a single integrated unit.
The integrated concept offers a number of advantages, including a smaller
footprint, reduced pressure drop and lower power draw. The system control
panel, driver panel and switch gear panel for the UV reactor are included in
the system as separate units. The Wrtsil BWT 500i has been purpose built
for marine applications and fulls the requirements in the IMO Global Ballast
Water Convention 2004, which clearly states how ballast water should be
treated before release into the sea.

therefore congured individually.
WRTSIL CONTROL SYSTEMS
UNIFIED CONTROLS
Wrtsil unied controls, UNIC, introduce a exible and fully scalable control
system for large reciprocating diesel and gas engines.
23
HIGH RELIABILITY AND EFFICIENT DESIGN
The UNIC system is designed to full the long lifetime expectations for large
marine diesel and gas engines operating in the toughest of conditions. The
system is based on a high degree of commonalities and standard interfaces,
covering different engine sizes and fuel systems in a modular way. A
modular, standardized interface provides the designer of the off-engine
automation systems with easily reusable design. It allows conversion of
for example diesel engines to dual fuel or common rail with a minimum of
modications. Due to the pre-tested conguration, the engine or generating
set is operational with a minimum of commissioning and installation work.
The critical parts of the UNIC system are either redundant or very
fault-tolerant to enhance high safety and availability in all circumstances.
In particular, parts like the communication and power supply are fully
redundant to allow single failures without interruptions in engine operation.
Thanks to the electronic control, the engine can be adapted to different
operating conditions.
Key features of the UNIC system are a complete engine safety system,
local monitoring, speed control with loadsharing, fuel injection, timing control,
knock detection, alarm signal aquisition, start/stop sequencing, load reduction
request, system diagnostics and eldbus interface as applicable for each
engine conguration.

supply vessels, cable-layers and other ships which require manoeuvring
enhancing systems.
For vessels equipped with podded propulsors, a dedicated Wrtsil Joystick
is available, including features such as a simplex DP-mode and anchoring mode.
27
WRTSIL VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE
The variable speed drive is specially designed for lifetime operation in a
maritime environment. It is the worlds most compact, low voltage (690V)
variable speed drive with excellent performance in control of propulsion
motors, pump applications, compressors, mooring and winches, and drilling
operations. The drive is water cooled and can be directly connected to the
ships cooling water system. Other important features are the redundant
design and interchangeable power modules, which give an easy and efcient
service concept.
WRTSIL PASSIVE RECTIFIER
The variable speed drive can be delivered with a diode rectier in a 12 pulse
or 24 pulse conguration, very well suited to either a Wrtsil LLC system or a
standard transformer solution.
WRTSIL ACTIVE FRONT END RECTIFIER
The variable speed drive can also be delivered with an active rectier front
end which allows for energy ow in both directions, eliminating the need for
transformers and braking resistors. Direct Current Control and network lter
give small ripple currents and very low harmonic distortion.

MULTIDRIVE SYSTEMS, DC SOURCES
The variable speed drive can also be delivered as a multidrive system, where
the inverters are connected to the same DC-link. Combined with our patented
electronic DC breakers, these work independently. The multidrive system can
be connected to the main grid through either active or diode rectiers, and
also allows for DC-sources such as batteries and fuel cells.
29
WRTSIL SWITCHBOARDS
Wrtsil low and medium voltage switchboard systems are optimized for
marine use.
When developing our switchboard systems, the need for easy installation
and maintenance is a key consideration. The system is module-based and,
therefore, very exible. Later extensions can also be easily added.

DEFINITIONS AND NOTES FOR LOW-SPEED ENGINES
DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHTS
z All dimensions are in millimetres and are not binding.
z The engine weight is net in metric tonnes (t), without oil and water, and is
not binding.
FUEL CONSUMPTION
All brake specic fuel consumptions (BSFC) are quoted for fuel of lower
caloric value 42.7 MJ/kg, and for ISO standard reference conditions
(ISO 15550 and 3046).
The BSFC gures for Wrtsil engines are given with a tolerance of +5%.
Wrtsil RT-ex engines have a lower part-load fuel consumption than
the corresponding Wrtsil RTA engines. Wrtsil RT-ex engines are also
available with Delta Tuning and the RT-ex82C and RT-ex96C also with Low-
Load Tuning for even lower part-load fuel consumptions (see chart). Low-Load
Tuning will also be introduced to the other RT-ex engines in the portfolio.
Delta Tuning and Low-Load Tuning both take advantage of the complete
exibility in engine setting provided by the RT-ex common-rail system to
optimize fuel injection pressures and timing at all loads. Delta Tuning focuses
on reducing BSFC in the operating range below 90% engine load.
48
Low-Load Tuning further reduces BSFC in the operating range below
75% engine load by means of a modied turbocharging system layout in
combination with appropriately adjusted RT-ex system parameters.

EMISSIONS
All Wrtsil low-speed engines included in this booklet comply with the
NO
X
limits specied in Annex VI of the MARPOL 73/78 convention. For the
X
amended regulations under IMO Tier II and Tier III, please see page 10.
The latest versions of these engine types are available either complying
with the amended regulations under IMO Tier II, or complying with the existing
IMO Tier I regulations. Previous versions of these engine types comply only
with existing IMO Tier I regulations.
Compliance with the IMO Tier II NO
X
emissions limits involves a small
X
increase in fuel consumption compared with the BSFC with the Tier I limits.
Wrtsil RT-ex electronically-controlled common-rail low-speed engines will
comply with the Tier II NO
X
emissions limits with a smaller increase in fuel
X
consumption than Wrtsil RTA low-speed engines.
Provisions for compliance with IMO Tier III NO
X
emissions limits will be
X
announced at a later date but in ample time for the implementation date.
49
RATING POINTS FOR WRTSIL LOW-SPEED ENGINES
The engine layout elds for Wrtsil low-
speed engines are dened by the power/
speed rating points R1, R2, R3 and R4
(see diagram to the right). In certain
engines, the layout eld is extended to the
points R1+ and R2+. R1, or R1+ instead
if applicable, is the nominal maximum
continuous rating (MCR). Any power and
speed within the respective engine layout
eld may be selected as the Contract-MCR
(CMCR) point for an engine.
CYLINDER LUBRICATION
The load-dependent accumulator cylinder lubricating system has proven
reliable in operation since its introduction in the 1970s. It is employed as
standard on Wrtsil RTA low-speed engines of smaller bore.
To enable lubricating oil feed rates to be reduced, the accumulator system
has been further developed in recent years. The new Pulse Lubricating System
with electronic control of lubrication timing has been developed. It is available
for all Wrtsil RT-ex low-speed engines and for selected RTA engines. The
guide lubricating oil feed rate with the Pulse Lubricating System is
0.7 g/kWh. This allows important savings in engine operating costs.
For further information on this subject, please consult your nearest Wrtsil
company.

DUAL-FUEL ENGINES
Wrtsil is continuously developing its portfolio of gas and multi-fuel engines
to suit different marine applications, be they offshore oil and gas installations
where gaseous fuel is available from the process, or a merchant vessel
operating in environmentally sensitive areas. The Wrtsil engines offer high
efciency, low exhaust gas emissions and safe operation. The innovative multi-
fuel technology allows exibility to choose between gas or liquid fuel. When
necessary, the engines are capable of switching from one fuel to the other
without an interruption in power generation.

PRE-ENGINEERED MEDIUM-SPEED GENERATING SETS
78
WRTSIL GENSETS
A wide range of generating sets, comprising generator and diesel engine
mounted on a common baseframe, are available for both service power
generation and for diesel-electric propulsion. All generating sets listed in this
section are based on medium-speed diesel engines designed for operating on
heavy fuel oil. The generating sets are resiliently mounted and the generator
voltage can be selected in all cases except for the Auxpac generating sets,
which are Low Voltage only. Larger diesel generators are delivered for separate
mounting of the diesel engine and generator.

Two different propeller diameters.
Controllable pitch propeller (CS) or xed pitch propeller
(FS).
Propellers in nozzle or open propeller.
Reduction ratios optimized for application.
Weld-in stembox or can-mounted.
Soft on/off clutch or modulating clutch.
Remarks
The propellers are designed for bollard pull condition in
tug boat application.
Bollard pull calculations are based on two installations,
100% MCR power and 2% thrust deduction.
Selections are valid for classication without ice class;
nal selection is subjected to rules of classication
societies.
Thrusters with controllable pitch propellers improve
manoeuverability and efciency over the complete
speed range, and protect the engine against overload.
Thrusters with controllable pitch propellers are very
suitable for constant speed operation.
The weld-in stembox provides easy installation and
maximum stiffness of the construction in the vessel.
The can-mounted thruster provides the possibility to
install or remove the thruster while the ship is aoat.
Modulating clutches (MCD) improve manoeuverability
for thrusters with xed pitch propellers at low speeds.
Low duty (LD) modulates between 0 and idle engine
speed. Heavy duty (HD) modulates between 0 and
maximum engine speed.

WRTSIL JETS
Waterjet propulsion is the most successful and efcient method of propulsion
for vessels which have speeds in excess of 30 knots, or where there is a
likelihood of the vessel operating in shallow waters which do not permit
propulsors protruding from the hull. Wrtsil has successfully installed
waterjets in various landing craft and other applications that require shallow
water access, high maneuverability or low noise and vibration levels. In
addition, Wrtsils Waterjet and Rened Propeller (WARP) system offers a
solution for craft with a versatile operating requirement around 30 knots.
Usually about one third of the total vessel power is linked to two propellers
with the rest of the power for the central boost waterjet. The advantage is
reduced vessel draft with optimized propeller diameter for efcient cruising
around 20 knots. For top vessel speed around 30 knots the propellers and the
waterjet are designed to jointly achieve the thrust required. Wrtsil is leading
the market for WARP systems with several Navy, Ferry and Yacht applications
in operation with both controllable & xed pitch propeller waterjet
combinations.
104
WATERJET TYPES
Wrtsil has a unique portfolio of waterjet types available. The right waterjet
for your application will be selected based on the operating prole and the
required ship interface. The operating prole will determine the type of pump
to be selected. For high power dense, high speed applications above 50 knots,
a non-axial E-type pump design is available, delivering optimum performance
for extreme vessels. For applications that require optimum propulsion
efciency for design speeds below 4550 knots, our axial geometry waterjet
designs are the optimized match. Our axial waterjet design is the most
compact and most light weight waterjet design available in the full stainless
high-end waterjet market, offering extra thrust at the low end of the speed
range for top acceleration.
PRE-ASSEMBLED PACKAGES, WRTSIL SRF DESIGN
For ease of installation with minimum ship interfaces, waterjet sizes up to
the 810 can be delivered in an easy install package with all auxiliary systems
pre-mounted. The waterjet inlet duct is included in the scope of supply with
impeller shaft and bearings delivered pre-aligned on a ready-install skid.
The most compact, easy install waterjet package available in the market with stainless
steel impeller and a unique stainless steel stator section for vessel top performance long
after initial newbuild sea trials. Other system materials are optimized for use with light
weight aluminium or composite crafts.
105
The design has all oil-lubricated or oil-containing parts mounted inboard of
the vessel, and it is the only easy install waterjet package in the market with a
compact steering and reversing assembly not extending outside the transom
mounting ange diameter.
Aluminium materials are avoided for the stator bowl and the full stainless
stator section with the stainless impeller and shaft provides optimum
resistance against abrasive wear of the stator blades. Deterioration of the
stator blade prole should be avoided wherever possible since they play an
important role in the largest energy transformation that takes place in a jet
system. For vessels requiring top performance also long after initial newbuild
sea trials a stainless stator section will deliver its value.

WATERJET SIZE SELECTION
The graphs below indicate the jet size required based on the relation between
the engine power and the design speed of the vessel. For instance a ship with
four 1250 kW engines and a corresponding vessel speed of 33 knots will need
four 510 size waterjets. A ship with a design speed of 40 knots at 1250 kW
power can use 450 size waterjets. The correct jet size is thus indicated by the
line above the intersection of the power and the corresponding vessel speed
(see examples in graphs below).
We are available from the earliest design stages of the vessel to work with
you on an optimized propulsion system. Please contact us for an optimized jet
selection based on specic vessel design parameters, operating prole or for
details of waterjets above 50 knots or 30 000 kW. DXF/DWG format general
arrangement drawings of the most often used sizes are available.

WRTSIL HIGH EFFICIENCY NOZZLE
Fitting a nozzle increases the thrust at relatively low ship speeds. Signicant
savings can be achieved in terms of fuel consumption, depending on the
number of revolutions and the capacity of the engine.
The improved Wrtsil high efciency nozzle, type HR and HP, combined
with a Wrtsil propeller, can produce up to 10% more thrust than
conventional nozzles, both in bollard pull and in free sailing condition. The
nozzle prole offers a double proled cross section (outside and innerside).
This sophisticated shape improves the water ow both into and out of the
nozzle, increasing thrust performance.
ENERGOPAC
Energopac is the optimized propulsion and manoeuvring solution for coastal
and sea going vessels. The key objective is to reduce the vessels fuel
consumption by integrating both propeller and rudder design. Each Energopac
is designed to t the vessel and to meet its specic requirements; this allows
Energopac to be optimized fully for energy efciency, whilst not compromising
on either manoeuvrability or comfort levels.
FUEL SAVINGS
Energopac reduces fuel consumption because it reduces ow separation
behind the propeller hub in an effective way. Extended studies show that for
Two Wrtsil FP propellers in HR nozzles.
110
the same course-keeping
capabilities, Energopac
will create less drag than
conventional rudder systems.
Especially when using small
corrective steering forces
to keep your vessel on course,
the difference in rudder
resistance is signicant.
The high-lift performance
of Energopac requires
smaller steering angles and
consequently reduces the
rudder resistance.
DESIGN SPACE
The application of Energopac gives more freedom to optimize between
conicting requirements. High performance propeller designs are often a
compromise between increased efciency and reduced vibration levels.
Energopac allows for a propeller design, that gives the optimal balance
between these requirements.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
Energopac will effectively reduce the operational costs for any vessel with a
considerable share of free sailing time in its operational prole. Additionally, it
will work very well for propellers with a relatively large propeller hub.
The potential savings are large for vessels with highly loaded controllable pitch
propeller systems such as RoRo-vessels, ferries, container / multipurpose
vessels and vessels with an ice class notation.
COST SAVINGS WITH ENERGOPAC
The reduction in fuel consumption depends very much on the vessel type,
the operational prole of the vessel and also on the reference propeller and
rudder. For any application, the power savings can be estimated by Wrtsil.
The estimate is based on the vessel design, operational prole and other
requirements.
Proven savings in required power for a vessels trial speed vary between
29% with Energopac.

112
WRTSIL REDUCTION GEARS
The core function of a reduction gearbox is to reduce the main engine speed
to the optimum propeller speed. The Wrtsil gears have been designed to
meet the highest standards of operational efciency, reliability and low noise
and vibration.
GEAR CONFIGURATIONS
The gears can be supplied with built in multidisc clutches. Single input, single
output gears are available with vertical or horizontal offsets of the shafts. Twin
input single output gears can be delivered with up to 3.8 m horizontal offsets.
POWER TAKE-OFF (PTO)
All Wrtsil gears can be supplied with one or more PTOs for driving the shaft
alternator, compressor or pump. For single vertical and horizontal gears, the
standard PTO is primary driven. For twin input-single output gears the PTO is
optionally primary or secondary driven.
z A primary driven PTO is rotating whenever the engine is rotating.
z A secondary driven PTO is rotating whenever the propeller shaft is rotating.
Two speed PTOs are available for gear types SCV85-SCV128.

POWER TAKE-IN (PTI)
Most Wrtsil gears can be supplied with a combined PTO/PTI. In PTI mode the
shaft alternator can also be used as an electric motor.
PTI is normally used for the following operation modes:
z PTI Booster mode is used when the main power of the engine is too small,
in order to increase the total propulsion power. For this mode, no clutches
are required on the gear.
z PTI Take me home mode is used in case of emergency, if the prime mover is
out of operation. For this mode a minimum of 2 clutches are required on the gear.
Two speed PTO/PTIs are available for gear types SCV85-SCV128.
INTEGRATED OR SEPARATE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
FOR GEAR AND CP PROPELLER
Most Wrtsil gears are purposely-designed with an integrated hydraulic
system for both the gear and the CP propeller. As the separate hydraulic power
unit for the CP propeller is superuous, both installation costs for the yard
and operational costs for the owner are reduced. For safety reasons the gear
mechanically drives the main pump for the propeller. All gears can also be
interfaced to a separate hydraulic power unit.
Wrtsil gear type TCH350-S58.

Wrtsil gear type TCH370-P63.
Wrtsil is the worlds leading supplier of marine seal, bearing and stern tube
systems. Wrtsil is the only supplier in the world to offer a full range of both
radial and axial seals, commonly known as face and lip seals. The products are
available for any type and for any size of vessel, for naval and for commercial
applications. The products are reliable, efcient and easy to maintain through
Wrtsils global service network. Our range of seals, bearings and stern tubes
is unequalled in the market.
ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS
The environment is safe when Wrtsils water lubricated seal and bearing
systems are installed. There being no oil in the system, no oil leakage can
occur. Wrtsil also offers non-polluting, environmentally friendly, oil lubricated
systems in which the lubricating oil and the sea water are completely
separated; they do not share a common barrier. Such systems from Wrtsil
are in use on multiple vessel types including cruise ships, LNG carriers,
container ships and bulk carriers. The systems ensure continuous operation
between planned maintenance with no unplanned dockings for emergency
repairs.

OIL LUBRICATED LIP SEALS FOR PROPELLER SHAFTS
The oil lubricated lip seal portfolio comprises seals in various congurations
suitable for stern tubes, thrusters and pods etc. The seal rings are developed
and produced in-house from Viton which provides exceptionally high
resistance to wear and attack by either sea water or oil.
CONVENTIONAL LIP SEALS
The OLS3-P is a conventional seal
system with 3 seal rings and the
OLS4-P has an additional standby
seal ring for increased reliability.
The 4th seal ring can be activated
in the rare case of oil leakage
occurring to the sea to overcome
the leakage and to enable
continued operation of the vessel.
ENHANCED LIP SEALS
The environmental anti-pollution systems OLS3-PA & OLS4-PA operate by
separating the oil and water seal rings by a pressurised air space that is
drained and monitored inboard.
The oil pressure in the stern
tube and air pressure in the air
chamber uctuates to allow for
varying vessel draughts giving the
seal optimum performance and
increased life. The OLS3-PA has 3
seal rings and the OLS4-PA has an
additional stand-by seal ring.
LIP SEALS FOR DREDGER / ABRASIVE WATER APPLICATIONS
A further enhanced seal, ideally suited to operation in muddy / sandy water,
is available in conventional and environmental versions with or without a
stand-by seal ring. The system provides a continuous water ush to prevent
the ingress of any abrasives to the seal. The above mentioned lip seal systems
come with an OLS2-P forward lip seal comprising 2 seal rings for security
inboard.
120
OLS4-PA
OLS3-P
OIL LUBRICATED LIP SEALS FOR RUDDER STOCKS
OLR2-P & OLR3-P seals are equipped with 2 & 3 seal rings respectively. For
rudder stocks, where the seals use no shaft liner the seal rings slide directly
on the shaft, the seal rings are therefore produced in NBR.
OIL LUBRICATED FACE SEALS FOR PROPELLER
SHAFTS
A broad range of outboard seals is available in various congurations
comprising face only and face/lip
combinations. These incorporate very hard
wearing external sealing interfaces, corrosion
resistant metal components and exible
bellows. The excellent designs and use of high
quality materials ensure excellent performance
and longevity. Further security is available with
optional rope / net protection devices.
NON-POLLUTING FACE SEALS
This system is unique in that it enables
all potentially polluting oil to be contained
within the vessel, using a double barrier seal

separated by a vent space at atmospheric pressure, and a very low stern tube
pressure of no more than 0.2 bar.
FACE SEALS FOR SPECIALIST
APPLICATIONS
These face seals are ideal for
use in specialist applications
such as thrusters.
OIL LUBRICATED FACE SEALS
FOR RUDDER STOCKS
This range is ideally suited to
rudder stock applications.
WATER LUBRICATED FACE SEALS
When these water lubricated systems are used, the environment is safe. Thus
they are ideal for use in environmentally sensitive areas. Wrtsils extensive
water lubricated face seal portfolio comprises various congurations, each
suited to specic applications including
stern tubes, water jets, submarines
and rudder stocks. They can be used
in open and closed systems and are
suitable for ice class vessels. Typically
the seals comprise two assemblies; one
rotates with the shaft while the other
is stationary. A exible bellows ensures
sustained and uniform contact between
the seal interfaces during normal

ship and mechanical movements. The design
enables the seal interfaces to be inspected
without the need to disturb the propeller or
shaft.
BULKHEAD SEALS
These ensure the integrity of water tight
bulkheads where penetrated by a rotating shaft.
They are bi-directional and thus can be tted on
either side of a bulkhead.

OIL LUBRICATED WHITE METAL BEARINGS
STERN TUBE BEARINGS
White metal-lined stern tube bearings
are designed for trouble free service
throughout the life of a vessel.
LINE SHAFT BEARINGS
Used to support a propeller shaft
between the engine and stern tube.
They are available in self and forced
lubricated versions and both are
available as self-aligning with
spherical seat. Spherical bearings
allow for the dynamic changes in
shaft alignment and provide better
distribution of load across the
bearings surface.
OIL LUBRICATED
