OpenOffice or LibreOffice = MS office GIMP = Photoshop gcc, g++ = Turbo C++ Open Source Application OpenOffice Alternative to MS Office OS Linux Windows Java OpenOffice provides a great alternative to existing commercial office suites. It comes with word processor Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (Writer), spreadsheet (Calc), presentation (Impress), 1.5.x, required to use full drawing and graphing tool (Draw), tool for creating OpenOffice.org functionality that need equations and formulae (Math) and finally a database tool Java which also build reports and forms (Base). All Microsoft Windows components are multi-platform and multilingual. Development is sponsored by Sun Microsystems. Windows: Windows (NT4, 2000, XP or Vista). RAM: 128 MB Linux: Debian (deb) Fedora 9 (RPM) Gentoo Portage Slackware openSUSE 11.0 (RPM) Ubuntu (deb) RAM: 128MB Probably the oldest and most well-known open source graphic application - GNU Image Manipulation Program or Gimp was started in 1995 and has since then grown to the status it has today. Gimp is a valid competitor to all of the commercial bitmap drawing programs on the market. Among its features you find: powerful painting tools, layers and channels support, multiple undo/redo, editable text layers. Gimp as a plug-in architecture and a scripting engine that allow easy extension of it's functionality. More than a 100 plug-ins and scripts are already available. Also Gimp imports files from Photoshop (psd) and can also read scalable vector graphics (svg) files. If you feel at home in Photoshop, but need an open source alternative - Gimpshop is the way to go. Gimpshop is a hack made on top of the original Gimp project which changes all menues, dialogs, etc., in order to make them look as much as their counterparts in Photoshop. This makes users who are already familiar with the layout of Photoshop feel right at home in this open source application. Please note that all features in Photoshop in not available in Gimpshop, since it is based on the Gimp project and it's feature set. Started as a fork of the Gimp project, the goal is to create a more professional graphical editing application aimed at the movie industry. One of the major differences from Gimp is that CinePaint support up to 32-bit colors. And in order to get 32-bits images into CinePaint it supports a

PSPP

SPSS

PSPP is an alternative to SPSS, a program used to analyze data. PSPP doesn't impose limits on the variables you use and you don't have to acquire different versions in order to access advanced functions. Like SPSS, PSPP can be used for non-parametric tests, descriptive statistics and more. It is a fast running package no matter how large or small the input data happens to be. You can use the graphical interface or, if you prefer, syntax commands. PSPP's data files and syntax are compatible with SPSS and it supports over a billion variables and cases. You can operate it with Open Office, Gnumeric and other open source software you may be using. Like SPSS, it's simple to import data from other sources such as text files or spreadsheets. You can also export files in portable, system and ASCII format. No matter what type of computer you have or which operating system you are using, PSPP is likely to be compatible. You have a choice of formats for your output and graphics including PDF, HTML and ASCII. PSPP also produces histograms and a variety of charts to make your results attractive and understandable for presentation.

FreeCAD

AutoCAD, SolidWorks

FreeCAD is general purpose CAD (computer aided drawing) software that targets product design and mechanical engineering. It can be easily used for any engineering specialty, featuring tools that are modeled to function like SolidWorks, Solid Edge and Catia. Its main focus is dynamic simulation and analyzation. It has a GUI (graphical user interface) based on Qt framework and its 3D viewer allows quick rendering of 3D scenes. It is simple to use and easy to quickly figure out its special functions. QCad Community Edition is an open source edition of RibbonSoft's CAD system. QCad is a 2D CAD application that aims at being simple enough for anyone to use - even users with no previous CAD experience. Compared to the Professional edition the Community Edition has no scripting or poly-line support - also features are a few months behind. Features include layers, dxf files import and export, many flexible drawing tools and precise selection tools. BRL-CAD is an open source cad systems based around constructive solid geometry (csg) modeling. On top of all of it's modeling features, such as the interactive geometry editor, BRL-CAD offers parallel ray-tracing, path-tracing, image and signal processing tools. The ray-tracing process can even be distribution over a network of

CSG is a fascinating way to work with 3d modeling and allows you to quickly build rough models and can be finalized later with all required details.

Archimedes

AutoCAD, SolidWorks

Archimedes is a computer aided design (CAD) solution focusing on architectural design. While the current version of Archimedes may not be mature enough for all this project is very promising. It already has many of the most common and advance drawing features you will find in a commercial CAD solution. However, it's interoperability with other products is still lacking. On the other hand drawing can be exported in scalable vector graphics (SVG) format - allowing you to share finished drawings with a wide audience without requiring them to install the product. OpenProj is a new open source solution for project management. It's simple user interface is very similar to that of Microsoft Project. OpenProj even let's you import you existing Microsoft Project files directly, so that you can fast and easily migrate all of you project. Primavera files can also be imported. The project plan can be viewed as a gantt charts and it also supports network diagrams (PERT charts), WBS and RBS charts. Everything is controlled and updated based on your information and run through OpenProj's advanced scheduling engine - to provide a complete upto-date view of your project. OpenProj is professional project management on your desktop not matter which operating system you use Aiming to be a direct alternative to Microsoft Project Open Workbench provides project planning and scheduling together with resource management. Open Workbench even offers import of Microsoft Project files to make migration easier.

Also need to formulate a plan for the hardware on which Linux desktop will run. Plan to buy new hardware or to utilize what we already have? Can Linux work on the hardware you are currently using? One of the advantages of Linux is that it runs well on older hardware, performing better than Microsoft Windows in this respect. Newer hardware can present challenges with Linux because, to date, there is typically no support "out of the box." However, companies such as HP, IBM, and Dell are improving their support for Linux. Supported Hardware Vendors Acer, IBM,HP, Dell, etc. Acer, IBM,HP, Dell, etc. Acer, IBM,HP, Dell, etc. Acer, IBM,HP, Dell, etc. Acer, IBM,HP, Dell, etc.
