A dream fullled
MLK memorial, years in the making, resonates with LGBT community
By DIONNE WALKER
When a tribute to the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. is dedicated this weekend, it will mark more than the addition of a new monument to Washington, D.C.s landscape. It will symbolize the civil rights leaders success. The stone likeness rises as the rst monument to a man of color on the National Mall, 48 years after King described his then ground-breaking dream, and in a nation where at least ostensibly much of that dream has been realized. The movement was a model for countless others, including the LGBT rights push, which has shared nonviolence tenets and even leaders like gay, black activist Bayard Rustin. Yet most similarities end there. While fruits of the civil rights movement are evident in modern America apparent in a widening black middle class and a black rst family in the White House, for instance the gay rights movements successes have been slower coming. Same-sex marriage rights remain tenuous and limited to a handful of states; despite hate crime legislation, the threat of violence continues to deny many gays and lesbians a basic sense of safety in their hometowns. As the nation prepares to welcome King to the National Mall, community leaders share their outlook on the LGBT movement with the Washington Blade from a California group using civil unrest to humanize the struggle; to the partner of late gay and civil rights icon Bayard Rustin working to keep his ideals alive; to former NAACP leader Julian Bond, who uses his status as a key historic civil rights gure to promote the LGBT rights struggle as a modern civil rights ght. They point to entrenched faith-based bigotry, and even a lack of movement cohesion, as obstacles. But each believes that by using Kings model of continued struggle, the LGBT dream of full equality can be achieved.
The civil rights movement pioneered by MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., has inspired many leaders of the LGBT movement.

Images of change
The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. sitting in an Alabama jail cell. Fireghters battering blacks with powerful jets of water. Jeering whites pouring condiments over the heads of stoic lunch counter protesters. Theyre images that moved activist Robin McGehee, as a child growing up in Jackson, Miss. And today as executive director of GetEqual, she organizes demonstrations
to create actions and images she hopes will drive home the plight of gay and lesbian men and women just as powerfully. An absence of such visual tools encouraged McGehee to form the group, with ofces in Berkeley, Calif., and Washington, D.C., in January 2010. We had that in reference to the AIDS movement in ACT-UP, and ghting for adequate health care. But in reference to a full civil rights ght for equality, I couldnt think of one iconic action, she said. The group has orchestrated more than 40 actions in the last year, including one in which military veterans handcuffed themselves to the White House fence to protest Dont Ask, Dont Tell. The group honed use of such actions at the Highlander Research and Education Center, a New Market, Tenn., center that trained members of the original civil rights movement. McGehee and other LGBT equality activists underwent training at the historic center in January 2010. Not until you can give literal imagery to that discrimination do people really resonate or get it, McGehee said. Yet despite mirroring the earlier movements successful tactics, activists success in mainstreaming LGBT rights remains light years behind that of racial equality something McGehee blames
on entrenched religious bigotry. Weve gotten into a moment where people are using the Bible as a weapon, said McGehee, pointing out that while religious rhetoric once justied slavery and racism, cultural changes eventually erased such thinking. ... I dont think weve jumped that hurdle with regard to gays. McGehee is encouraged, however, by more subtle success in incorporating gays and lesbians socially. Just a few years after Ellen DeGeneres thought twice about coming out on TV, realistic portrayals of gays and lesbians are common on TV. In time, she said, I think were gonna get there.
A life of service
Walter Naegle had certainly heard of Bayard Rustin, the relentlessly active civil rights agitator who gained as much notoriety for his efforts to win black equality as for his open homosexuality. But on the day he ran into the civil rights legend on a New York City corner in April 1977, he didnt recognize him: Rustin wasnt carrying his trademark walking stick. When he gave me his name, I knew, said Naegle, whose chance meeting with Rustin lead to a 10-year relationship that
ended only when the activist died in 1987. More than two decades later, Naegle keeps Rustins ideals alive, working with lmmakers to promote Brother Outsider, a portrayal of Rustins story, executing his estate and generally overseeing the use of his image. He believes Rustins courage, openness and tireless work he was in his 70s and still agitating when he died have helped make him resonate as an icon of the human rights movement. By the time Naegle met Rustin, the activist had long been a legend. Rustin had worked with A. Philip Randolph to strengthen relationships between blacks and labor unions, but was perhaps best known for his role organizing the 1963 March on Washington. Hed also become a gay rights icon before it was fashionable: Rustin was essentially outed in 1953 when he was arrested on a morals charge, yet he refused to deny the charges or his sexual orientation. He didnt have to hide anything, he said. He was just going to be who he was and let the chips fall where they may. Rustin would pay the price for that openness.

Additionally, Wolfson said Mikulskis cosponsorship would put her in a position to back same-sex couples in her state who are married or are seeking the right to marry. While Maryland doesnt offer samesex marriage under state law, it recognizes such unions that are performed in other jurisdictions. According to recent numbers published by the Williams Institute at the University of California in Los Angeles based on data from the 2010 U.S. Census, 16,987 samesex couples live in Maryland and make up 7.88 couples in every 1,000 households. Rachel MacKnight, a Mikulski spokesperson, said the senator is very closely looking at Feinsteins legislation. As long as the Senate is out of session for August recess, Mikulski is unable to sign on as a co-sponsor to the legislation. An informed source said the senator would make an announcement regarding her support for the Respect for Marriage Act in September. Other members of the congressional delegation from Maryland have already signed on in support of the legislation. Cardin, the junior senator from Maryland, joined on as a co-sponsor in May. The legislation has a total of 28 co-sponsors in the Senate all Democrats. In the House, where Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) sponsors companion legislation, Reps. John Sarbanes, Donna Edwards and Chris Van Hollen as well as House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer have become co-sponsors. The House legislation has 120 co-sponsors in total. Lisa Polyak, acting board chair for Equality Maryland, said support from Mikulski would round out the complement of statewide elected ofcials in Maryland whove voiced support for same-sex marriage.
WATERLOO, Iowa A deadly mob beating of an Iowa teen will not be ruled a hate crime by police because of bad blood. Though two friends witnessed 19-year-old Marcellus Richard Andrews being attacked by a large group of men and women who kicked and punched the defenseless teen while shouting faggot and feminizing the teens name to Mercedes, police blamed the attack on a longer-running feud, the Des Moines Register reported. Police spokesperson Lt. Michael McNamee told the Register that the ght was unfortunate but not a hate crime. Weve done multiple interviews and we have heard those allegations, but this was not because of his persuasion or the perception of his persuasion, McNamee told the Register. These were all people who knew each other, and there was some bad blood between the two parties involved. Civil rights groups across Iowa expressed outrage this week over the decision not to pursue hate crime charges.

INDICATION: REYATAZ (atazanavir sulfate) is a prescription medicine used in combination with other medicines to treat people 6 years of age and older who are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). REYATAZ has been studied in a 48-week trial in patients who have taken anti-HIV medicines and a 96-week trial in patients who have never taken anti-HIV medicines. REYATAZ does not cure HIV or lower your chance of passing HIV to others. People taking REYATAZ may still get opportunistic infections or other conditions that happen with HIV infection. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Do not take REYATAZ if you are allergic to REYATAZ or to any of its ingredients. Do not take REYATAZ if you are taking the following medicines due to potential for serious, life-threatening side effects or death: Versed (midazolam) when taken by mouth, Halcion (triazolam), ergot medicines (dihydroergotamine, ergonovine, ergotamine, and methylergonovine such as Cafergot, Migranal, D.H.E. 45, ergotrate maleate, Methergine, and others), Propulsid (cisapride), or Orap (pimozide). Do not take REYATAZ with the following medicines due to potential for serious side effects: Camptosar (irinotecan), Crixivan (indinavir), Mevacor (lovastatin), Zocor (simvastatin), Uroxatral (alfuzosin), or Revatio (sildenafil). Do not take REYATAZ with the following medicines as they may lower the amount of REYATAZ in your blood, which may lead to increased HIV viral load and resistance to REYATAZ or other anti-HIV medicines: rifampin (also known as Rimactane , Rifadin , Rifater , or Rifamate), St. Johns wort (Hypericum perforatum)containing products, or Viramune (nevirapine). Serevent Diskus (salmeterol) and Advair (salmeterol with fluticasone) are not recommended with REYATAZ. Do not take Vfend (voriconazole) if you are taking REYATAZ and Norvir (ritonavir). The above lists of medicines are not complete. Taking REYATAZ with some other medicines may require your therapy to be monitored more closely or may require a change in dose or dose schedule of REYATAZ or the other medicine. Discuss with your healthcare provider all prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamin and herbal supplements, or other health preparations you are taking or plan to take. Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. REYATAZ use during pregnancy has not been associated with an increase in birth defects. Pregnant women have experienced serious side effects when taking REYATAZ with other HIV medicines called nucleoside analogues. After your baby is born, tell your healthcare provider if your babys skin or the white part of his/her eyes turns yellow. You should not breast-feed if you are HIV-positive. Also tell your healthcare provider if you have end-stage kidney disease managed with hemodialysis or severe liver dysfunction. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any side effects, symptoms, or conditions, including the following: Mild rash (redness and itching) without other symptoms sometimes occurs in patients taking REYATAZ, most often in the first few weeks after the medicine is started, and usually goes away within 2 weeks with no change in treatment.
Severe rash may develop with other symptoms that could be serious and potentially cause death. If you develop a rash with any of the following symptoms, stop using REYATAZ and call your healthcare provider right away: Shortness of breath General ill-feeling or flu-like symptoms Fever Muscle or joint aches Conjunctivitis (red or inflamed eyes, like pink eye) Blisters Mouth sores Swelling of your face Yellowing of the skin and/or eyes may occur due to increases in bilirubin levels in the blood (bilirubin is made by the liver). A change in the way your heart beats may occur. You may feel dizzy or lightheaded. These could be symptoms of a heart problem. Diabetes and high blood sugar may occur in patients taking protease inhibitor medicines like REYATAZ. Some patients may need changes in their diabetes medicine. If you have liver disease, including hepatitis B or C, it may get worse when you take anti-HIV medicines like REYATAZ. Kidney stones have been reported in patients taking REYATAZ. Signs or symptoms of kidney stones include pain in your side, blood in your urine, and pain when you urinate. Some patients with hemophilia have increased bleeding problems with protease inhibitor medicines like REYATAZ. Changes in body fat have been seen in some patients taking anti-HIV medicines. The cause and long-term effects are not known at this time. Immune reconstitution syndrome has been seen in some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS) and a history of opportunistic infection. Signs and symptoms of inflammation from previous infections may occur soon after starting anti-HIV treatment, including REYATAZ. Gallbladder disorders (including gallstones and gallbladder inflammation) have been reported in patients taking REYATAZ. Other common side effects of REYATAZ taken with other anti-HIV medicines include: nausea; headache; stomach pain; vomiting; diarrhea; depression; fever; dizziness; trouble sleeping; numbness, tingling, or burning of hands or feet; and muscle pain. You should take REYATAZ once daily with food (a meal or snack). Swallow the capsules whole; do not open the capsules. You should take REYATAZ and your other anti-HIV medicines exactly as instructed by your healthcare provider. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088. REYATAZ is one of several treatment options your doctor may consider. Please see Important Patient Information about REYATAZ on the adjacent pages.

Rep. TAMMY BALDWIN is expected to announce her candidacy for U.S. Senate after Labor Day.
WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY
Baldwin is widely expected to make an announcement just after Labor Day. Denis Dison, spokesperson for the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which has been pushing Baldwin to run for the Senate, said Feingolds announcement is encouraging. Were still assuming that there is going to be a competitive primary; somebody is going to pop up, Dison said. But I think if her decision had much to do with whether or not Feingold was running, obviously this is a much more encouraging environment and atmosphere to run in. Larry Sabato, a political scientist at the University of Virginia, said via e-mail that Feingolds decision to sit out the race is a big boost for Baldwin. She could not have gotten the nomination against Feingold no question he would have defeated her if she had even run, which I doubt, Sabato said. Now, shes got a good chance to be the Democratic nominee, although we have to wait and see who runs against her. The dust hasnt settled from Feingolds announcement. Other Democrats who are said to be mulling potential bids for the Senate seat include Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wisc.), a seventerm member of the U.S. House, and Steve Kagen, a former U.S. House member from Wisconsin who was unseated in 2010. Kind has publicly said hes considering jumping in the race. But according to data published by Public Policy Polling, Baldwin would defeat those opponents in a Democratic
primary. In a three-way race with Kind and Kagen she leads with 37 percent to 21 percent for Kind and 15 percent for Kagen. Additionally, in just a two-way race with Kagen she leads 48-19. In addition to favorable polling numbers in the hypothetical primary, Baldwin also has more money on hand compared to either Kind or Kagen. In the most recent Federal Election Commission reports, Baldwin posted $1.1 million in cash on hand after raising more than $600,000 thus far this election cycle. Comparatively, Kind has $478,000 in cash on hand after raising $592,00o this cycle. Kagen has no cash on hand and has only raised $18,000 this cycle. Dison said potential Democratic challengers to Baldwin will look at those numbers in determining whether to run against her. I think if anybody whos going to consider getting into the race will look at that polling, theyll look at her fundraising and decide whether it will too much of an uphill battle to challenge her, Dison said. But winning the seat against a Republican contender in the general election will be more challenging. Potential GOP opponents like former Gov. Tommy Thompson or former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann are marginally ahead of her in the polls. The data from PPP shows that in a match-up between Neumann and Baldwin, Neumann would win 44-40, although 15 percent of responders said they were undecided. In a contest between Thompson and Baldwin, Thompson would
win 50-42, although eight percent of voters identied as undecided. Fundraising data for Thompson and Neumann wasnt available on the FEC website. Sabato said the key for the general election is whether Thompson wins the GOP nomination and, if he does, how handily he wins the Republican mantle. Hes viewed as a moderate within the GOP, and as we saw in 2010, that can cause problems, Sabato said. Will the Tea Party back Mark Neumann or some other opponent of Thompson? Will Gov. Scott Walker and Sen. Ron Johnson decide to endorse Thompson or an opponent in the GOP primary? If Thompson clinches the Republican nomination without too much difculty, Sabato said hed give him a slight edge over Baldwin in the general election, but added his prediction could be off because of the timing of the Senate race. I hasten to add that Wisconsin is going to be a real battleground presidentially, Sabato said. Obamas large majority in 2008 is less representative of Wisconsins contested nature than the 2000 and 2004 presidential results, which were extremely close. Presidential coattails could matter greatly in Wisconsin, as in some other Senate contests. And look at the recent Wisconsin State Senate recall elections $30 million plus spent on a handful of local races, with emotions running very high. Sabato said things are so unclear on both sides in the Wisconsin Senate race that his Crystal Ball website will rank the contest as a Toss Up in its next edition.

proceedings has already found relief after Napolitano issued the new guidance. Alex Benshimol and Douglas Gentry, a married gay bi-national couple in California, learned on Saturday that ICE dropped proceedings against Benshimol, a Venezuelan native. In a statement, Gentry said the decision by ICE to exercise prosecutorial discretion and take Benshimol out of the deportation pipeline, effectively taking him out of danger, is extremely encouraging. This should bring hope to so many couples in our situation, Gentry said. As happy as Alex is, hes still uncertain. We will still have to ght for full equality because DOMA prevents me from petitioning for his green card. But the constant fear of exile or separation is over, and for that were very grateful. The case marks the second time this year that ICE has dropped deportation proceedings against a same-sex couple. In July, immigration ofcials discontinued proceedings against Henry Velandia, a gay Venezuelan national, who lives in New Jersey with his spouse, Josh Vandiver. Another couple that could receive a call from ICE and obtain relief is Sujey and Violeta Pando. The Denver, Colo, couple, who have been together ve years and married last year in Iowa, received media attention last week after an immigration judge decided to postpone deportation proceedings against Sujey, a Mexican national, until January. Violeta told the Blade that a phone call from ICE informing the couple that Sujey would be taken out of the pipeline
for deportation would make them so happy thered be no words to describe the feeling. I think theres a possibility because under Secretary Napolitanos memo, it listed some categories, and Sujey ts all those categories, Violeta said. So, I dont see why not, she has ties to the community, shes married to me, shes not a criminal. Growing up in Mexico, Sujey was ostracized by her family for being a tom-boy and says she was raped and beaten growing up. At the age of 16, she was brought into the United States. Her deportation troubles started in 2008, when she was arrested after a trafc violation and taken to jail. ICE was notied and deportation proceedings started against her. The specter of deportation, Violeta said, still concerns the couple and they dont know what action theyd take if a deportation was ordered against Sujey. We try not to look at that as an option, Violeta said. I dont know what I would do. We dont look at that as an option, we need to ght for this. It all goes back to DOMA. So, no, not an option. But the new guidance would only affect gay foreign nationals who are currently facing deportation proceedings. Gay foreign nationals in same-sex relationships who are seeking legal status and protections, but havent yet had deportation proceedings started against them, arent affected the Obama administrations change.

Whenever he would rise to a certain level, particularly in the African-American civil rights movement but also in other movements, something would happen and someone would try to chop him down, Naegle said. Nonetheless, He was not defeated. He didnt turn around and stop his activism he just worked on the sidelines. Rustin remained active with several organizations, including the A. Philip Randolph Institute and the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, at the time of his death. Years later, his story still has the power to inspire. Naegle said a book of his letters is slated for publication in March, in time for what would have been Rustins 100th birthday. Naegle believes his partner would have been heartened to see marriage equality happen in even one state. But he wouldnt have been satisfied with limited success. Its fine to have these victories in urban areas, Naegle said. But people all over the country should be entitled to the same thing. Gay and lesbian rights are not special rights.
The former partner of BAYARD RUSTIN said the gay civil rights leader would be happy with the arrival of marriage equality, but would have pushed for it in all 50 states.

Where others may see conflict between the black and gay rights agendas, Julian Bond sees similarities. Both groups struggle against bigotry based on personal characteristics. Both are entitled to basic rights by the same Constitution. And both benefit from each others successes. Indeed, he argues, People of color ought to be flattered that our movement has provided so much inspiration for others that it has been so widely imitated, Bond, who works as an adjunct professor at American University, told the Blade. The man who has worn many hats as a Georgia lawmaker and leader with both the Southern Poverty Law Center and the NAACP, has more recently directed his outspoken energies to the conflict between civil rights and gay rights advocates. Its a particularly touchy dispute. Old school civil rights leaders and even some black gays bristle at LGBT activists use of Kings rhetoric to promote their agenda as a modern civil rights movement. Some site racial divisions within the LGBT movement, and argue that discrimination faced by gays isnt as harsh as that faced by blacks. Yet for Bond, there isnt much of a dispute: The two groups must lock arms. Many gays and lesbians worked
side by side with me in the 60s civil rights movement. Am I now to tell them thanks for risking life and limb helping me win my rights, but they are excluded because of a condition of their birth? he said. That they cannot share now in the victories they helped to win? Bond has lent his outspoken rhetoric and organizational skills to many causes over the years. While a student at Morehouse College, in Atlanta, in the 60s, he helped organize the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, he was the first president of the SPLC and was board chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People from 1998 to 2010. Hes become one of the most vocal mainstream voices in the movement to promote equal treatment for gays and lesbians, going as far as to boycott the funeral of King widow Coretta Scott King in 2006 after the services were arranged at an anti-gay church. In July, Bond spoke at an NAACP forum discussing gay and lesbian issues in the black community, featuring openly gay black comedian Wanda Sykes and CNN anchor Don Lemon. People of color carry the badge of who we are on our faces. But we are far from the only people suffering discrimination, Bond said. Sadly so do many others. They deserve the laws protections and civil rights too. Bonds comments stand in contrast to the black communitys historically conservative stance on gay issues. Yet he said one need only look at the personal examples set by the lauded civil rights leaders to see whether such thinking is in line with Kings dream. We cannot know what Dr. King would have thought about todays GLBT movements, Bond said. But if we consider the prominent role his widow, Coretta Scott King, occupied in speaking out on GLBT rights, it is hard to believe that he would not have done the same.

As the country celebrates the ofcial opening of the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial on the Mall in Washington, we are called to remember the words and deeds of Dr. King and to think about what they meant to each of us. For some he is a savior, for others an inspiration and for others a gure of history. No matter your perspective, he was a great man with an incredible inuence on our nation. I count myself extremely lucky. I got to meet and talk with him. As awards commissioner of my New York high school, I had the opportunity to extend an invitation to Dr. King to accept our schools annual citizenship award. The principal and faculty adviser suggested that he would be much too busy to accept and that the senior class choose an alternative recipient. But we had faith and on Feb. 26, 1963, just seven months before he made his I Have a Dream speech in Washington, Dr. King arrived at George Washington High School in upper Manhattan to accept our award. Presenting that award to Dr. King is one of the highlights of my life. I am a rst generation American. My parents came to the United States to escape Nazi persecution. My father came from Germany and my mother and her parents from Austria. My fathers parents died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. I learned from my parents at an early age that discrimination of any kind is wrong and that it had to be fought. My father rst made me aware of a poem by Lutheran Pastor Martin Niemoller. It is called First They Came for the Jews. It is a simple poem. First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me. My parents taught me that when there
Dr. King fought a battle against so many, and for so many, and did it with a grace and humbleness that sometimes hid the steel in his spine.
is injustice one must speak out and they admired King for his courage and his willingness to speak up to the powers that be. After college I taught school in Harlem. The second school I taught in was a dilapidated old building on 145th Street off Broadway. The PTA decided they were going to ght to get a new school for their children. I joined the ght, taught my class in a local RKO movie theater after the parents padlocked the school doors, and took the class to demonstrate at City Hall to demand a new school. Lo and behold the parents stood up for the rights of their children and won and a new school was built. After teaching I went to work for Rep. Bella Abzug (DN.Y.) and joined with her in the ght for womens rights. Many years later as a gay man ghting for my own rights I often thought of Dr. King and looked at the picture of myself with him and was reminded again that if one man like Dr. King had the courage to lead a peaceful revolution I could summon the courage to speak out for myself and others. As we continue the ght for LGBT rights, we come across those who dont understand how it compares to the ght for civil rights and I remember how both Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, spoke out for the LGBT community. Ayn Rand once said, The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities. I often want to quote that to people who cloak their bigotry and hatred in religion and claim they are for human rights just not LGBT rights. But then I remember Dr. King and how he fought a battle against so many, and for so many, and did it with a grace and humbleness that sometimes hid the steel in his spine. He fought with love in his heart and worked for peace. Each of us in our own small way must do no less.

When the D.C Bag Tax went into effect on Jan. 1, 2010, the Wall Street Journal quoted the owner of Pleasure Place wondering if the adult toy store would be required to charge for paper or plastic bags as a result of selling edible body frosting. Being asked by a department store clerk if a bag is desired for a stack of purchased clothing due to a Godiva Chocolatier located somewhere within the sprawling building causes most people to opt for a pose this side of a shoplifter or looter. But the plastic bags at grocery stores available to package fruit, vegetables, nuts, candies, bakery goods, frozen foods or owers are exempt. Restaurant doggie bags are free as long as they are paper. Same for the bags at fast casual restaurants and take-out shops as long as there are tables and chairs. The list goes on. Re: Growing rift between Lanier, LGBT community (op-ed by Peter Rosenstein, Aug. 17) Thank you, Peter. You have provided an excellent historical account of Chief Laniers failed policies and actions with respect to MPDs GLLU. Despite Laniers soothing PR words to the LGBT community, it is the de facto anti-LGBT messages that her ofcial actions have repeatedly sent throughout MPDs chain-of-command that concern many of us. Brian First and foremost, thank you Peter for writing about whats really going on in this city with MPD and the LGBT community. We must continue informing the community on whats really happening with out sugarcoating it. I hope we continue to address this issue with MPD in the media. Ruby Corado
Re: Perry shakes up GOP presidential race (news, Aug. 18) Who was the male staffer with whom Perry allegedly had an affair? Maybe the man needs to speak out about it. The only way to defuse anti-gay hypocrisy by those who want to condemn us publicly while getting some on the side is to publicly expose the hypocrites. Hoist them up by their own petard, as they say. If that sounds too radical for some delicate PC palates, then let me ask you this: How do you like the secondclass status people like Rick Perry keep you in? How can anyone who believes it acceptable to discriminate against an entire class of citizens aspire to lead a nation whose founding document promises equal justice under law for all Americans, not only heterosexual Americans? I wont even mention the mans earlier call for Texas to secede from the union he now wants to lead. John-Manuel Andriote If it looks like George Bush, walks like George Bush and talks like George Bush, its probably Rick Perry. NaderPaulKucinichGravel
Re: Deportation halted for lesbian Mexican national in same-sex marriage (news, Aug. 20) All these administrative reforms from the Obama WH are welcome, even if they are almost three years too late. None are permanent and all are based on Obamas steeply sliding poll numbers. Bill Perdue Re: Anti-gay Indiana politician offered $80 to teen male escort (news, Aug. 12) Is it a case of self loathing, false modesty, morality (whatever that word means anymore) or simply a case of pandering to your elective despite your own true nature? But maybe thats the lesson here, that public rhetoric is so darn loud and compelling that we often find ourselves taking on positions that dont really complement our true natures. Who said politicians werent cynical? Scallywag Im sure hell be just another Christian hypocrite who comes out saying he
needs help for his addiction. When are straight Republican Christians going to realize they are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites and if there is a God, they will not be welcome in his home? Marc Re: At Iowa Republican debate, some LGBT progress, some entrenchment (news, Aug. 12) Were you watching the same debate? Ron Paul said that hed rather have all government out of marriage completely! He did say that state control was preferable to fed control but his position that hed rather let people do what they want as long as they arent hurting anybody easily came through. The difference with Ron Paul and ANY other candidate is even though he may not agree with something, like drugs, homosexuality, or other social issues, he wont impose those beliefs on you or tell you how to run your life. He wants the governments hands out of our lives. AH

Priority or option?
Its OK to give someone the benet of the doubt a time or two, but dont let yourself be played
problem? Allowing your partner to be your priority while simultaneously allowing yourself to be his or her option. With the rise in dating apps, indecipherable text messages and online dating sites, its easy to fall into the trap where you arent sure whether he is portraying an illusion, or hes really into you. Unfortunately, friends often aid in steering this confused person in the wrong direction by enforcing the idea that maybe his phone died or something came up at work when he blows them off. Friends love to identify with the victim and tend not to bring attention to the real issue at hand. Obvious one-sided relationships are painful to watch. Heres the scenario: A friend who is seeing someone has repeatedly cancelled on you when their special someone calls unexpectedly.(S) he is probably already entrenched in a one-sided relationship. The reality is that your friend needs to recognize the signs that (s)hes just not into her/him. This is challenging to do, so we recommend suggesting your friend hire a therapist or matchmaker to help him or her work past these mystifying messages and stay on the right path toward reaching the goal of a lasting relationship. Its difcult for the naive to see the warning signs of their one-sided relationship. Weve seen it many times, so here are a few: You ask your so called girl/boyfriend to meet for drinks. (S)he said (s)he is busy, but when her other plans fall through, you get a call asking Do you want to still grab a drink? Without hesitation, you say yes. Another great example is when you turn down offers from friends to hang out, praying this special person will ring. Speaking from experience, this is a great way to lose a friend. Sound silly and immature? Yes. Then why do people hang on to someone or the idea of being in a relationship with this disconnected person? Sometimes we think the more we hang out together, the more the other person will be into us. That said, yes, relationships and attraction can grow after multiple meetings. Its important to recognize the difference between getting to know you better and I have nothing else to do, so yeah, Ill meet you. There are also instances where you wont admit that the person you are pursuing is out of your league. You hold on to the thought that because you have dinner twice a week, theres a chance for the two of you to be skipping off into the sunset together. (S)he might just be bored and yes, enjoy your company. But thats it. (S)hes not going home after your date and picking out your wedding planner. Last minute dates or meet ups usually mean you are their last resort. Especially if you run in similar social circles, recognize the warning signs that (s)hes not into you before everyone talks behind your back. Dont allow your world to revolve around this person unless you get the respect and attention you deserve. To the friends out there watching this disaster unfold: Wake them up, give them a little shake, but take feelings into consideration. Say things like, So how are things going with Mr/s. So and So? or He cancelled on you again? Thats how many times in a row? or Have you ever thought it might just be a convenience for her to see you not true love? Remind your friend how it feels it feels to be stood up. Its never fun to hear that someone is using you or isnt into you as much as you hoped. Realize, reect and respond and end a potentially horric relationship that will make you look like a fool. D.C. gays know BOB MOULD from his DJ work at the Blowoff parties he spins with Richard Morel. If thats all you know of Mould, his new autobiography eshes out his impressive musical backstory.
Terri Schlichenmeyer has been reading since she was 3 years old. She lives in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books. Reach her at bookwormsez@yahoo.com.
It all started with Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. It continued with a spider, the ABCs, and being a little teapot. From there, you embraced what your older siblings listened to until you developed your own musical tastes. You had records, moved to tape, CD, and now your iPod is full. The point is, youve never been without your tunes. But what about the people who make the music you love? In the new book See a Little Light by Bob Mould (with Michael Azerrad), youll learn about one mans life in song. Born in 1960 in the northernmost end of New York, Bob Mould entered a family wracked with grief: just before Mould was born, an elder brother died of kidney cancer. Mould surmises that the timing of his birth resulted in his being a golden child, the family peacekeeper who sidestepped his fathers physical and psychological abuse. As a child, he writes, music was my escape. Moulds father, surprisingly indulgent, bought his son guitars and Mould taught himself to play chords and to create. By the time he entered high school, Mould knew that he had to get out of New York to get away from his family. He also knew he was different and that being gay would be a problem in his small hometown. He applied for and entered

There are plenty of myths and misinformation in regard to health and tness. One myth that stands out and is a frequently asked question is how can I get rid of this? This is referring to a particular fatty part of the body where someone wants to reduce, often known as spot reduction. Most people, both men and women, have specic parts of their body where they wish to reduce fat or eliminate ab. For women it is generally the hips, thighs, triceps and buttocks; for men, it is often the abdominal area. Most people have a problem area they dont like and want banished, but are at a loss, or nd themselves spinning their wheels, in trying to chip away at this fatladen area. Can it be done and how? The easy answer is yes, you can eliminate fatty areas, but the unpopular and accurate truth is that you will not be able to eliminate fat in a specic area solely by exercising that one area spot reduction simply cannot be done and the notion that it can is an ill-fated belief. Furthermore, Mother Nature played a cruel joke on the human body and she holds on to those problem areas with gusto and lets go of the fat in these areas at the last possible stage of weight loss. In other words, the area where you put fat on rst is eliminated last and vice versa. For instance, the face is generally the last area where excess fat begins to show and the rst place we take it off.

Singer PAMALA STANLEY met Blue Moon proprietors RANDY HANEY and TIM RAGAN in Puerto Vallarta and invited her to play the popular Rehoboth bar, where she was an instant hit.
WASHINGTON BLADE PHOTO BY BRANDON WAGGONER
And let me play among the stars. She owes her life in Rehoboth to Tim and Randy of the Moon. Shes not only changed the face of live entertainment in Rehoboth Beach, shes enabled us to lure other stars like CoCo Peru and Miss Richeld because shes our ambassador as she sails the seven seas off season, Ragan says. He and Haney, together 32 years, fell in love with Stanley in Puerto Vallarta eight years ago. They invited her to play the Moon for a limited appearance, and she was an instant hit. A few months later she called to say her cruise ship had been dry-docked and they brought her back to town. Her hit disco single, Coming Out of Hiding in 1984 foreshadowed what was to come: Standing in the shadows for too long. Tonight, at the Blue Moon, with a wallto-wall crowd swaying and twirling to her every note from Gershwin to Gaga Pamala Stanley, 59, is having her day in the sun, at the Moon, as the star. Theres not a shadow in sight. Shes one sultry dame, and does it with that rare combination of grace and camp. As we all age a bit, even my straight audiences on the cruise ships love a saucy tale or two, she says. Her nightly event is bookmarked on a lot of iPods and calendars. From Poodle Beach, where the young and t Gagaleaning fan base frolics and cavorts, all the way out to North Shore, where the Gershwin crowd naps and reads, you can just picture the visitors to Rehoboths gay beaches heading home en masse at 5 p.m. to shower and primp. Then they arrive sipping and twirling around one another on the Moons patio. Around 6 p.m., she takes the stage and everyone, it seems, has a favorite spot to soak in the divine Ms. Stanley. Her rapport with the audience is dually heart warming and heart
thumping and she routinely invites fans on stage to dance. Her show changes nightly. You might hear Madonnas Vogue and Gagas Born this Way one night, and the next its the Beatles and Cole Porter. She has incredible bona des: Stanley auditioned for the legendary Hal Prince for the title role in Evita and nearly eclipsed Patti LuPone. Later, she came in fourth among three spots for Bette Midlers Harlettes. Though best known for her four top 20 dance hits, she has released several recent albums, including 2007s Seasons of My Heart, an adult contemporary work with country inuences and 2009s I Am There, featuring original Christian songs. Theres a new dance album in the works, tentatively slated for a December release, according to her website. Today, throngs await her in Rehoboth. She adores her life here and the combination of fame and anonymity. If there was a Fame-Anon 12-step program, Stanley would be president. I can shop without makeup. So theres poor Patti LuPone pumping pancake into her pores and wrestling a wand of mascara just to go to the drugstore. Our Pamala slips on her ip-ops and a baseball cap and joins her buddies at the nearby Purple Parrot for lunch. Cry for Patti, not for Pamala. The disarmingly nice girl from Norfolk was the head cheerleader, the homecoming queen and came from a very talented and musical family according to her childhood neighbor and friend, Michael. The whole damn family was gorgeous, talented and nice! She has collaborated extensively with her brother, James Lee Stanley, a writer, and worked with several of her family members. In 1977, she was a Broadway Baby wannabe working in a gay piano bar at West 46th Street in the Manhattan theater district. By day, shes walking off my tired feet, pounding 42nd Street and missing top billing by a nose when talent scouts
from EMI Records in Germany came into the piano bar one night. They had their eye on her white grand piano that they wanted for a photo shoot. They ended up loving her voice instead. And thus the talent scouts left the piano behind but took the talent with them, and Pamala Stanleys meteoric rise began.
EMI Records ew her to Berlin rst class on Lufthansa. The Germans wanted to morph her into a white Donna Summer. She hit it rst with This Is Hot and much later in life she shows her Broadway show tune roots as she smoothly transitions from her own disco creation This is Hot to brilliantly and soulfully croon Cole Porters Its Too Darn Hot. She continued her climb in Deutschland, becoming a star with hits such as Coming Out of Hiding and If Looks Could Kill. She talks candidly about working in a recording studio that stared into communist East Berlin. The perky girl from the west side of Manhattan, working in West Berlin saw a very sad sight to the East. It was as gray and depressing as one could imagine and as she tells the story, she gets teary eyed. When disco officially and abruptly died, she flew to Ecuador to perform for a rich gay mans birthday party. She became a hit there when her disco fame and her fluent Spanish merged. In Ecuador they decided she was the American Charo. And then Ecuadors government fell to a coup d etat and everything closed down. She tells these tales with wistful adventure and zany recall, reminiscent of Lucille Ball. Unlike the legendary Mama Rose of Gypsy fame, the late Mary Grace Immaculate Borio encouraged her daughter Pamala from heaven and not hell. She owes everything in life to my sweet mama and more than anything,
Stanley has the supreme satisfaction of having a conversation where her mother proudly encouraged her daughter for living your dreams. Thats priceless currency for someone whos traipsed through Germany and Ecuador to get here. Stanley is twice divorced and has one son who lives in New Jersey. My kid Frankie loves my gay audience, she says. He often says, eight or nine of my dads are gay! I realize that its her mama who gave her a heart as big as Texas. I ask Stanley who her rst gay boyfriend was, and she immediately replies, We were 8 and we played Barbie dolls together. Aha! It was the neighbor, Michael. Asked about this, Michael replies, well rst off, when she was 8, I was 6 and while we did play Barbies together, my fondest memory of Pamala was the day she rode as queen in the homecoming parade, sitting atop that Cadillac convertible. Id never seen anyone as beautiful. Glinda sang this with Elphaba in Wicked, but it could be written for two innocent kids playing Barbie together: Ive heard it said That people come into our lives for a reason Bringing something we must learn And we are led to those who help us most to grow If we let them And we help them in return Well I dont know if I believe thats true But I know I am who I am today Because I knew you Her mama gave her the right family values, and an 8-year-old girl with a Barbie in one hand, extended the other to her friend, Michael. A lifelong love affair with the gay community ensued. To start your own love affair, visit the Blue Moon before Stanleys last show of the summer on Sept. 29.

Although too many people dont know it, Washington is home to one of the best animal shelters in the world. If youre skeptical, come by and see for yourself. Even if youre not, wed love to have you visit. And if youre looking to adopt a cat or dog, so much the better. But rst a little about us. The Washington Animal Rescue League has been rescuing animals in the District of Columbia since its inception in 1914. We built the rst animal shelter in the nations capital and our current shelter, completely renovated in 2006, was designed specically to meet the needs of abandoned and mistreated animals; it now fully supports the physical, mental and social healing of dogs and cats recovering from traumatic pasts. Roomy, glass-enclosed living spaces have individual ventilation, acoustic noise control and natural lighting. Running water, which helps relieve stress, is a prominent feature and for exercise, dogs enjoy four landscaped parks and cats have a large indoor playground. And we have excellent programs to go with our rst-class facility. The League is one of the largest animal adoption facilities in the region with as many as 150 cats and dogs available at any given time. All animals receive complete medical and behavioral evaluations and we employ a user-friendly adoption program, Meet Your Match, to arrange successful placements. Plus, our certied professionals offer a full array of positive reinforcement dog training classes to our adopters and the public.

Our Medical Center treats more than 6,000 animals a year. Many patients are shelter animals once the League takes in an animal, it makes a 100 percent commitment to that animals care but the center is also the only local clinic that offers financial assistance to people who cannot afford
private veterinarians. It holds low-cost vaccination clinics every week and free spay/neuter clinics for feral cats and pit bull-type dogs every month. Among animal protection groups, the League is well known for its ability to carry out extensive disaster rescues. When natural and
man-made disasters displace large numbers of pets, leave animals sick and injured and overwhelm the local shelters, we are always ready to help. The League provides refuge and healing to animals from all across the United States, as well as Canada and even Kuwait. Some are escaping

floods, fires or hurricanes. Others are rescued from hoarding situations, dog fighting rings, puppy mills, medical research labs and other cases involving severe neglect and cruelty. Even as the League reaches out to animals across state and national borders, we are deeply committed to animal rescue in our own community. About two-thirds of the animals at the League are local, either surrendered by people who cannot keep them or transferred from other shelters in the D.C., Maryland or Virginia. Many of these animals come in needing medical care above what the original shelter can provide. Some come in simply because there is no room for them elsewhere. Since 2009, Project Rescue has been assisting the growing number of low-income people in our community with low-cost or even free veterinary care, free or low-cost spaying and neutering, a weekly affordable vaccination clinic, free pet food and supplies, emergency temporary shelter for pets of people in transition and free professional assistance to people who have questions regarding pet care and behavior. Theres a lot going on here and we welcome your involvement. Especially if youre thinking of adding an animal companion to your household. When you adopt from the League, you become a permanent part of our family. We guarantee our support in any way we can give it: medical, behavioral, emergency housing, even food and supplies in hard times. Everyone who adopts an animal also adopts us. Even if youre not able to adopt an animal, I hope you stop by to say hello and visit our animals. I think youll like what you see. In fact, I think youll be amazed to learn that such an upbeat and progressive animal shelter exists right here in D.C.
