Jennys feeling on top of the world!

HOOLES Jenny Beyer proved she has got a head for heights by climbing the highest peak in Africa. Jenny has just returned from an exhibition to scale Mount Kilimanjaro where she has raised funds for the Countess of Chester Hospitals Relative Comfort Appeal. Jenny said: I had a great time on the trek and met a lot of lovely people. It took us five days to get to the top and two days to come down. We walked a lot each day so we were always in bed by 8pm in the evenings! We had fantastic weather and never had rain as we were above the clouds which was rather cool. We slept in tents as we walked up the mountain and often it was quite hilly and you would roll onto your tent buddy! Luckily, Jenny had no problems with the altitude but 14 out of the group of 16 did! Jenny added: It took us six hours to walk to the top and we left at 12pm so that we could watch the sunrise at the top. We also had a cuppa as it was freezing at the top! Mind due we were 5,895 metres high! Anyway a massive thank you to everyone who has sponsored me. However its still not too late if you would like to sponsor me just go to http://www.sponsor-me.org/ jennyclimbskili Despite her efforts in Africa, Jenny isnt resting on her laurels. She is deep into training for the New York City Marathon in November. Although Jenny did give herself a week off before resuming training!

now there for all to see after the unveiling of a mural. Created by artist Gary Drostle, the ten metres by eight metres mural on the side of number 73 could become a tourist attraction in its own right. The Chester Renaissance project was unveiled by Cheshire West and Chester councillor Herbert Manley, executive member for prosperity. Photographed are local ward Councillor David Robinson, artist Gary Drostle, owners of the wall Angela Stevenson and Stuart Stevenson, sponsors Jan Yarasir and Erdal Yarasir, and Executive Member for Prosperity Councillor Herbert Manley.

Hotel conversion?

THERE is concern over plans to convert the Alton Lodge hotel, on Hoole Road into student accommodation. The developers, Alpha Property, say that the opening of a number of big hotels in the city centre has had an effect on the smaller operators in the suburbs. As a result, Alton Lodge is struggling to fill rooms and they are looking to create 21 student units instead. But local residents in Greenbank Road and Knowsley Road have written to the council to object, claiming that the conversion would change the character of the area, possibly leading to an influx of students in the future.

Bike bells handed out

CYCLING charity Sustrans has been handing out free bicycle bells and advice to users of the Millennium Greenway at Newton. The charity is seeking to promote better relationships between walkers and cyclists following a number of collisions and near misses.

Drugs stash found

OvER 3kg of Class A drugs have been seized by police following a warrant that was executed at an address in Hoole last month. Officers from Chester CID swept on the address in Pine Grove. A large amount of Class A drugs, believed to be ecstasy, were found at the address. A 22-year-old local man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of possession of drugs with intent to supply.

Some thoughts about Hoole by Andy Medcraft

Zombies on the streets!

I TURNED off the news tonight. The rain at the window offered a calming alternative to the violence and destruction we have all witnessed either first hand or via the endless news feeds. Following the initial shooting in Tottenham I followed with interest the unfolding protests and wondered how the riots would calm. I expected the political circus train chooing chooing into town but I did not expect the country to suddenly turn feral. Like cats in the wind, twitchy yobs pulled up their hoods and took to the streets. The copy cat mentality saw Birkenhead and Liverpool following suit. The streets became a zombie movie with mindless shuffling, groaning and devastation but instead of blood, these zombies were hungry for LCD televisions and Sony games consoles. These attacks were not acts of pent up passion about any one particular course. These attacks were premeditated seeing looters taking their time trying on the shoes they intended to steal to make sure they fitted and/or matched their outfits rather than just smashing and grabbing. The looters knew exactly what they wanted and went out to get it. My thoughts of Chesters historic building being targeted heightened my concerns. The UK had seemingly gone mad. I spent the day listening to sirens on the Hoole Road and wondered if I was just more sensitive to it now or if the emergency services were on route to douse rioters with water cannons and rubber bullets in vicars Cross. But, and here comes the but, I am no longer concerned. I am actually proud to say I live here in Hoole. Is this pocket in the North West more educated than the rest of the UK? Probably not but I do feel we are more fortunate to live in a community that may not enter into street parties to celebrate royal weddings but does enter into a mutual respect. There are still the feral rodents keying cars and leaving their dogs mess in Cooperative bags in the entrance to our alleyways but it unites those of us who suffer as a consequence. The gang of hoodies who litter the front of my house with their BMXs actually apologise and move aside when I want to get to my front door. Working in the social care sector with vulnerable adults I am well aware that the scenes of devastation have left all generations frightened but what I take from the riots is the positive images of the gang culture. The gang of volunteers that, through social networking sites, arranged to take to the streets and clear up the mess. What I will remember is the true British mindset of not letting these events stop our daily lives. The woman who climbed through the broken glass of the Liverpool laundrette to put on a service wash and the fact that with so much unrest in the country, I can walk down my street and feel safe.

Is this pocket in the North West more educated than the rest of the UK?
The rumour machine was now fuelling the fears. I didnt believe for one second that such scenes would creep up here in the North West but a neighbour working on Cheshire Oaks claimed that stores were shutting early as a precaution and the news feeds suddenly focused on Liverpool and Birkenhead.

New development will create potential for 1,000 jobs

CHESTERS proposed Business Quarter has been given a major boost with the news that one of Britains leading commercial development companies has acquired the citys former Lloyds Banking Group site. Manchester-based, Muse Developments have bought the 3.5 acre site, designated to be the heart of a Business Quarter offering 500,000 square feet of prime office space and the potential to create over 1,000 jobs. The existing Premier House building will be demolished to make way for the first two phases of the development, which will comprise of two BREEAM Excellent, six storey Grade A office buildings totalling 150,000 square feet. Development will be complemented by the provision of new public realm works, linking it with Chester Station and Shropshire Union canal.

Plans for the business quarter

Muse Developments expect to submit a planning application to Cheshire West and Chester Council in early 2012, with construction anticipated to start by 2013. Phil Mayall, the companys Senior Development Surveyor, said: We are delighted to announce the agreement of this acquisition from Lloyds Banking Group. We have worked closely with Lloyds to ensure that the new development complements its campus whilst creating an exciting new business destination for the City of Chester. We feel that the location with its strong transport links, amenities and close proximity to the historic Chester City centre will prove attractive to businesses looking for modern, sustainable premises. Said Council Leader Mike Jones: This is excellent news and demonstrates a substantial vote of confidence from the private sector in the Councils vision for the future of Chester. Following closely behind the recent announcement regarding the proposed development of the canal-side Shot Tower site, it represents a major boost for our exciting Business Quarter concept.

hot colours for september

september is a good month for flamboyant and brightly coloured flowers and more subtle colours for those who prefer them. Here are some of my favourites. Dahlias have a variety of flowers shapes but I like the larger blooms such as the cactus flowered varieties. Dahlias like rich, moisture retentive but well drained soil, in sun to do their best. Once they have finished flowering and the first frosts start, cut off the remaining foliage and dig up the tubers to store in a dry, frost free place overwinter. You can leave them in the ground over winter but if they freeze, the tubers may well die back and you will need to buy new plants next year. Lobelia cardinalis is a perennial that likes damp soil and has scarlet flowers on tall stems that will light up an autumn border. If you like quieter colours and have dry, well drained soil and sun, consider the small shrub Perovskia. This has grey green foliage and spikes of light blue flowers. They should

GardeninG by Janet heath

be pruned in spring by cutting the previous years growth back hard to about 2 to 3 buds as they flower on growth made in the same year. The ever faithful Japanese Anemone will flower for weeks and this year has started flowering almost a month earlier than usual. They take time to establish but will cover the ground and smother most weeds. Helianthus Lemon Queen is another favourite with lots of pale yellow daisy like flowers on stems up to 1.5m tall if grown in moisture retentive soil. One shrub that is at its best in September is Hibiscus syriacus or tree hollyhock. Slow to start off, these shrubs like a sunny position and will have hollyhock like flowers in white, pink or blue. Try Hibiscus Blue Bird or Woodbridge for a late show of flowers for weeks. If you have a pond, then cover it with netting to prevent leaves falling into the water and rotting. Lawns can be re-turfed or sow grass seed when the weather is wet. Also rake out dead grass and moss from the lawn in September.
