This is a unique opportunity for community, childrens services, disability services, NGOs and government service providers in the Mackay region to come together to receive information, develop skills and network. The focus of the days will be welcoming new settlers and supporting existing CALD communities, so that they can all thrive in our region. These two days will explore the local ethnic demographics, what we need to be aware of when working with migrants and refugees, and culturally inclusive service delivery, just to name a few. We are pleased to have Margaret Bornhorst, one of the most experienced cross-cultural trainers/facilitators in Queensland, to take us on this journey of self development and reflection. Margaret Bornhorst has spent the past 18 years specialising in cross-cultural awareness and skills as they apply to both managing and embracing the diversity created by immigration. She is a Queenslander who spent 14 years as in-house trainer at Multicultural Affairs Queensland and now runs training programs across Australia. Margaret has designed and delivered training to a broad range of vocational areas including business, corrections, customs, education, employment, health, law enforcement, local government, mental health, and tourism as well as to the community sector (aged care, child, care, disabilities, families, women and youth). On this occasion, Margaret is performing the role of Master of Ceremonies as well as contributing cross-cultural content to the conference.

DAY ONE: THURSDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 2011, 8.30AM-5.00PM DO YOU SPEAK MY LANGUAGE?
The planet is on the move! People from more than 220 birthplaces now call Queensland home. More and more ethnic communities are finding their ways into regional Queensland. Focusing on the themes of identity and belonging, this keynote will explore the journey of the person or the family who changes culture, and what local people can do, either individually or through their businesses, services or community organisations, to support and smooth the settlement process. The special challenges, benefits and opportunities created by immigration for the local Mackay community will be identified, as will the personal and professional rewards that come from learning about other ways of doing, feeling, experiencing, interpreting, seeing, thinking and understanding. Specific Learning Outcomes: A demographic overview of cultures and languages of new and older immigrant communities of the Mackay region An update on the types of migration programs and visa categories bringing new settlers to the Mackay region Cultural and language issues that new arrivals and older communities are grappling with How successful settlement, including for those people who have experienced torture and trauma, can be supported by local individuals and organisations Personal stories of new settlers Benefits, both personal and organisational, that come from a greater awareness of, and interest in, other cultures and languages

DAY TWO: FRIDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2011, 8.30AM-1.00PM OVERCOMING LANGUAGE BARRIERS

Once convinced that cultural differences are significant and can create important barriers to understanding about how services work in Australia, most service-providers are eager to improve their ability to overcome language barriers. There are three main language barriers. The first one is a lack of shared language between the service-provider and the client. The solution to this barrier is the use of professional interpreters. This workshop will provide all the information needed to communicate effectively through professional interpreters, including witnessing an interview assisted by a TIS interpreter. The second language barrier is accents, both Australian and foreign. This segment of the workshop includes an exercise designed to improve the individuals ability to understand the English of a person with a strong foreign accent. It also helps people to separate linguistic proficiency from accent, something that is difficult for many Australians until they have honed their attention. The third communication barrier is the complexity of Australian English for people who have learned English elsewhere. This segment gives advice on how to simplify your English without being patronising. The workshop finishes with a discussion of the aspects of English that are most challenging to new learners, and how participants can personally assist those struggling with English as a new language. Specific Learning Outcomes: An overview of the languages spoken in the Mackay region skill development on how to conduct an interview using a professional interpreter on the telephone or face-to-face Skill development on improving ability to understand 'foreign' accents Skill development improving ability to modify your Australian English to make it easier to understand for new Arrivals from non-English speaking backgrounds What local individuals and organisations can do to support English language learning.
The Professional Support Coordinator is an initiative funded by the Australian Government under the Inclusion and Professional Support Program. The IWDS Target Group includes volunteers, funded workers and management committee members in services that receive recurrent funding from the Department of Communities QLD (excluding disability, aged care and child care) as per the list provided March 2009. IWDS is a project of the Health and Community Services Workforce Council Inc. and is funded by the Department of Communities QLD. The Disability Sector Training Fund (DSTF) target group includes: workers in community based organisations who receive funding from Dept of Communities, Disability Services; unpaid carers; and family members of people with a disability. DSTF is funded by Dept of Communities, Disability Services.
