Preface
Transportation is one of the basic necessities of human beings. It is the only mode of commuting from one place to another and thus plays an extremely important role in human existence. Lack of it leads to a huge amount of discomfort and trouble to the economy as a whole. In todays global world there are numerous modes of transportation. In India the major instruments of transport are: Trains Airplanes Buses Taxi Auto Private vehicles, etc.

Of the ones listed above, buses and local trains are the major source of transport for the common man in India. And the population of India being so large the average number of people commuting through these per day is very high. Hence bus stands and railway stations become one the most crowded and sought after places in any city at a given time of the day. These reasons make it very important for the authorities of the respective systems to take proper and good care of the services they provide to the people. Cleanliness and hygiene are regarded of utmost importance especially when it comes to the usage of such public places and public utilities. The fact that so many people accumulate in these places for their daily commute and long distance travel purposes too makes it evident that there will be cleanliness problems and unhygienic atmosphere issued due to rampant usage round the clock. And thus it is regarded as an important issue to maintain the proper check of these services and keep it clean and hygienic for everyday use.

INTRODUCTION

Our project is related to the cleanliness and hygiene maintenance in Harihar Bus Stand, which comes under the purview of KSRTC organisation. We visited the bus stand to gather data on various aspects of the same. The officials present were questioned on how they take measures to ensure the neatness and cleanliness of the stands. They were enquired on how the process of cleaning is done, what the frequency is of maintenance and such sort. Also various pictures of the surrounding and the bus stand were taken to depict the present situation of the place. The data is then analysed to understand and draw conclusion on what the shortcomings are in properly maintaining these places. Also in the end suggestion are provided as to how we consider the process can be improved for better and efficient performance in this regard.

PROBLEMS FACED BY COMMUTERS IN KSRTC BUSUS AND BUS STANDS

It may be one hell of an experience to take a bus ride out of the city but a visit to the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Bus stand could just add to the tale. Filth and stagnation is found everywhere and the authorities have done little to keep a check on hygiene here. The authoritys lack of willingness to clean up the mess here has resulted in placing barricades and forcing people to take detours for no fault of theirs. Adding that the authorities had to be extra careful in such cases, stagnation and garbage could pose as a bigger threat during summer and the monsoon. The toilets have wet floors and people have to tread cautiously. Also such an unkept atmosphere deters the people from using these utilities. The bus services have improved but the basic services like seating and cleanliness have not been treated as a priority. Frequent commuters do not complain as they get used to the mess but added that if the authorities had implemented proper facilities, then the bus stand that serves as one of the first point of contact of the city, could be more appreciated by the common man and visitors alike.

Let us go through the actual condition of harihar bus stand

This is the picture of a place just at the entrance of Harihar bus stand Though the condition of land is in such a pathetic condition nobody is really bothered to care about maintain the cleanliness. This piece of land also comes under the bus stands compound. This place is generally used for dumping of the waste by the passengers and it is filled with garbage. As we can see there are pigs also roaming in this area which may lead to ill effects on the health of the passengers. Recommendation: Instead of wasting this land it could be probably cleaned and used for some other purpose. We recommend cleaning the area and planting some trees. And put some benches so that the passengers who come by can rest under the trees. A small park can be developed there which will include many plants and trees. This in return reduces the heat and pollution caused by the buses.

Garbage pit in Harihar Bus stand In this picture we can see the condition of garbage pit in the Harihar bus stand. This pit is not emptied for the past 8 months (according to some workers in the bus stand). We can just understand how much emphasis is done by bus stand authorities just by this. The odour near the pit is unbearable which could be source of several diseases and viral fevers. We can see the condition of walls of the compound in this picture. The walls are not painted from last three years. It was said to us that painting of walls will be done only during elections that is only once in 4 years. While doing the project we were not able to go near the pit also because of the bad odour. No one takes responsibility to empty the pits. When asked to the sweepers they say that it will be done only when some VIP visits the stand or when it is completely filled. These pits are to be emptied once in month atleast. Several flies and mosquitoes and other small organisms takes birth in such places which are responsible for deadly diseases like dengue fever, malaria fever and etc. Recommendation: The garbage pit should be emptied regularly atleast once in a month and some mosquitoes and flies avoiding powder or sprays should be used.

Condition of Dust Bin in Harihar Bus stand

As we can see in the picture the iron drums which are cut and used as Dustbins. These dustbins dont have cover atleast. Actually all the bus stations are provided with more sophisticated dustbins. We can just understand the negligence of the Bus stand authorities from this picture. By seeing this dust bin only no one will be willing to use it or go nearby it. This is also changed only during the times of elections. Until then everyone should be suffered to use this type of dust bins. Recommendation: The authorities should look into this matter and provide with much sophisticated dustbin which is covered.

Condition of the Drainage canal in Harihar Bus stand In this picture we can see the condition of drainage canal which is dried off and which is filled with the garbage. This canal is actually meant for liquid waste but here we can see how they are dried off by putting more and more garbage in it. This is just besides the auto stand where passengers often stand by. There is no one to look at this and no one is ready to take up the responsibility.

Recommendation: Someone should readily take the responsibility to look into this matter. They should clean it and use it for the sewage purpose which it is actually meant for.

Now let us see some of the other pictures which give us the current condition of harihar bus stand

Dirt under the buses in Harihar bus stand

By the above pictures we can understand how much cleanliness is maintained in harihar bus stand. Toilets in Harihar Bus stand: There are separate toilets for men and women in Harihar bus stand but coming to affairs of cleanliness it is really in pathetic state. It is cleaned once in three days. People cannot atleast stand near the surrounding of the toilets because of the bad odour. The fact is that almost everywhere we can see the same situation but the worst part here is cleaning of toilets which is done once in three days. Recommendation: Atleast once in day toilets should be cleaned so that passengers can avail the facility of toilets.

These is the alternative toilet used in Harihar bus stand which is never cared to be cleaned

Current scenario of cleanliness status in harihar bus stand

Actually required

Actually available

Number of cleaning staff required in harihar bus stand is nearly 15-20 members.

Number of cleaning staff actually working in Harihar bus stand is 8 members.

Number of dustbins or wastage collection bins required are 7-8 bins (overall the bus stand)

Number of dustbins or wastage collection bins actually exist are 4.( that too those bins are in very poor state of wreckage and cannot be called dustbins)

Harihar bus stand actually requires a supervisor for maintenance of cleanliness.

There is no such supervisor in the bus stand to look after the cleanliness.

Cleanliness checks or inspection should be done But in harihar bus stand cleanliness checks or atleast thrice a week in bus stands. inspection is done thrice a month that too just for the do sake. They do not take any steps to improvise the conditions.

By the above chart we can understand how far the cleanliness standards are met by the authorities of bus stand in harihar. This is the real and pathetic situation of Harihar bus stand.

Some of the measures given Harihar Bus stand authorities in their words when they were asked by us:

According to the authorities there is 15 Cleanliness staff which includes one supervisor. Brooming (Sweeping and wiping) is done thrice a day to maintain the surrounding clean. Toilets are regularly cleaned and dust bins are regularly emptied.

Actual scenario: There were only 8 sweepers and no supervisor as mentioned by the bus stand authorities. Sweepers have liberty to sweep and they sweep maximum once in a day in any time they wish to. Wiping is done only on some special occasions like visits of VIPs. Toilets are cleaned once in three days and so the Dustbins are emptied.

Conclusion
Though the KSRTC set up certain guidelines to maintain cleanliness in the Bus stands it is not being implemented according to the expected standards. We can see the inefficiencies of the authorities and their negligence in taking up cleanliness measures effectively. Government has to take up some strict stipulations in order to execute or implement all the cleanliness measures set by the KSRTC. Government should appoint special officers to inspect or visit different bus stands and to check if the cleanliness are measures are being effectively taken or not.

Limitations
Time period to do the project was limited. Authorities were not willing to provide the data required. Project was done only after 4 visits to Bus stand.

Thank you...
