Quick Start and Application Notes

Model: SHDTU03/ET10R 1.0 Introduction The SHDTU03/ET10R is a single port, 2 wire, G.SHDSL modem that supports bridging or routing over an ATM based DSL. 1.1 Equipment This guide will use a serial connection and console terminal. The use of Internet browser is covered fully in the User's Guide. The terminal settings for the modem are 9600baud, 8bit, No parity, 1 stop bit and no flow control. 1.2 Reset to factory default The default settings can be restored by first allowing the modem to boot (after G.SHDSL link and Active LED turn off and Alarm LED stops flashing), then pressing the reset switch for about 10 seconds (until the Link and Active LEDs light and Alarm LED flashes). 1.3 Login The default username is 'admin', the default password is 'admin'.
User: admin Password: *****

Press Enter at the 'mode' menu item; Use the TAB key to select either STU-C (CO side) or STU-R (cpe side), then press Enter.

Continue by using the down arrow and selecting and configuring in turn the remaining items. 1. n*64: this is the data rate Nx64kbps where N=1 (64kbps) to 36 (2304kbps); setting N=0 will enable adaptive rate (recommended on cpe side but not recommended on CO side). 2. type: Annex type, A or B; A for ANSI (America), B for ETSI (Europe). If setting P2P application, Annex B is preferred. 3. clear: this will clear the performance data 4. margin: The default is zero. Unless you know what you are doing, leave it zero. Press the left arrow (or CTL-L) to go back one menu, then arrow down to 'wan' and press Enter. Select WAN 1.

These menu items setup the DSL. 1. protocol: Select the proper protocol (encapsulation) for the application. For Bridging application use either Ethernet (EoA) or PPPoE; for routing applications use IPoA or PPPoA. 2. address: This sets the WAN port's IP address and subnet mask. This is only required when using a routing application. 3. vpi_vci: These are the ATM channel settings for virtual path and virtual channel, which by default are 0 and 32. In a P2P application, these must match on both CO and cpe modems. 4. encap: This is the AAL5 encapsulation method, which is either VC-Mux or LLC. LLC is the default encapsulation. 5. qos: This is the Quality of Service setting for the virtual channel. Unless you are an expert, leave this alone. The defaults are Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR), and 2400Kbps cell rate. 6. isp: These are the username and password used for the PPP connections (PPPoA or PPPoE). 7. ip_type: This sets the IP type for PPP connections as dynamic, fixed, or unnumbered IP. 8. list: This will list all the WAN settings performed so far.

Use the left arrow key to go back, then use the down arrow key to select 'lan' for configuration.

SHDSL ROUTER ---------------------------------------------------------------------------->> ip_type IP type address LAN IP address and subnet mask attrib NAT network type

----------------------------------------------------------------------------Command: setup lan 1 ip_type <Fixed|Dynamic> Message:

The LAN menu will setup the parameter settings for the Ethernet interface. 1. ip_type: Either fixed or dynamic are supported. 2. address: If fixed is chosen, then set the IP address manually here. In bridging it is not required, but if you wish to do remote management via Telnet, then set the IP and subnet for your network. 3. attrib: Sets the NAT type global or virtual. Global is default. Not required for Bridging. Use the left arrow to go back. The ip_share parameters are not required in Bridge mode. Select the dhcp parameter for setting. Select generic settings, choose 'active' and then TAB to disable DHCP service. In bridge mode we do not need to offer or relay DHCP service. However, for router we could enable this service for the connected network, in which case we would need to supply the 'default gateway', 'netmask', the IP pool, lease time and at least one DNS server.

Use the left arrow key twice to go back to the main menu. Use the down arrow key to select 'write'. Press ENTER and answer 'y' to save the configuration and 'y' to reboot the modem.

This completes setting up the modem for bridging. Now configure the other modem, using the same settings, except under the 'sdsl' settings make the mode be STU-R and set the data rate to '0' for adaptive rate. This will make the cpe side modem always track and follow the CO side's rate setting. Also, if you wish to remote manage the modem from Telnet, be sure to set the LAN IP and subnet for your network.
