Paul provides us a clear distinction the two in 2 Corinthians 7:9-10: As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting; for you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret, but worldly grief produces death. The conviction leads to repentance and life without guilt. Paul was rejoicing that the sorrow of the Corinthians would lead them to repentance. How do I know which kind of sorrow I am experiencing? you may ask. We feel the same. Think whether our feelings reect thoughts of truth or error, and we will identify their source. Do you feel guilt, stupid, incompetent and worthless? That is a sorrow provoked by accusation. Even if we are changed, we would not feel any better, because Satan would nd something else to harass us about. Judicially, we are no longer guilty; we have been justied through Christ. We are not worthless; Jesus gave His life for us. We can do all things through Christ who infuses His strength into us. (to be continued)
