Indication Pharyngitis, tonsillitis caused by S. pyogenes Otitis media caused by S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, S. pyogenes Lower respiratory tract infections caused by S. pneumoniae, H. parainfluenzae, H. influenzae
Mechanism Of Action Binds to one or more of the penicillin binding proteins (PBP located on cell walls of susceptible organism, inhibiting 3rd and final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis and thus killing the bacterium
Interaction Drug interactions Probenecid = decreases renal elimination of cefuroxime, prolonging its action
Side Effects CNS: Headache, dizziness, lethargy, paresthesias GI: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, abdominal pain, flatulence, pseudomembranous colitis, liver toxicity GU: Nephrotoxicity Hematologic: Bone marrow depression: decreased WBC, decreased platelets, decreased Hct
Adverse Reaction Hypersensitivity: Ranging from rash to fever to anaphylaxis, serum sickness reaction Local: Pain, abscess at injection site; phlebitis, inflammation at IV site Other: Superinfections, disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol
Nursing Responsibilities Advise patient to report severe diarrhea, difficulty of breathing, unusual tiredness of fatigue Report if there s pain at injection site.(redness, swelling) Advise patient to avoid alcohol while on this drug and for three days after. Warn patient that this drug should not be used to self-treat
Inhibits prostaglandin biosynthesis in the central nervous system but not (or hardly) in the peripheral tissues. Paracetamol only has
Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to drug. Use cautiously in patients with long term alcohol use because therapeutic doses cause hepatotoxicity in these patients.
Drug Interactions: Barbiturates, Carbamazepine, Hydantoins, Rifampin may reduce therapeutics and may enhance hepatotoxic effects of acetaminophen.
Rash, blood disorders, hypotension (low blood pressure) when given by injection into the vein (in hospital), liver and kidney damage - when taken at higher than recommended doses.
Advise patient that drug is only for short term use and to consult the physician if giving to children for longer than 5 days or adults for longer than 10 days. Advise patient or caregiver that many over the counter products contain acetaminophen; be aware of this when
minimal antiinflammatory action compared to non-steroidal antiinflammatory agents. Generic Name: Ciprofloxacin Brand Name: Quinosyn Classification: Antibacterial Ciprofloxacin is used to treat infections of the skin, lungs, airways, bones, and joints caused by susceptible bacteria. Inhibition of topoisomerase (DNA gyrase) enzymes, which inhibits relaxation of supercoiled DNA and promotes breakage of double stranded DNA. Contraindicated in persons with a history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin, any member of the quinolone class of antimicrobial agents, or any of the product components.
Drug-food interaction: Caffeine may enhance analgesic effects of acetaminophen. Drug interaction: Aluminum hydroxide, calcium carbonate and drugs containing zinc may decrease ciprofloxacin effects and absorption
calculating total daily dose. Warn patient that high doses or unsupervised long term use can cause liver damage.
Nausea, Vomiting, Stomach pain, Heartburn, Diarrhea, Feeling an urgent need to urinate, Headache, Hives, Difficulty breathing or swallowing, Hoarseness or throat tightness, Rapid, irregular, or pounding heartbeat, Fainting, Fever
Instruct patient not to take ciprofloxacin with dairy products such as milk or yogurt, or with calcium-fortified juice. may eat or drink dairy products or calciumfortified juice with a regular meal, but do not use them alone when taking ciprofloxacin. They could make the medication less effective. Inform that Ciprofloxacin may cause swelling or tearing of a tendon (the fiber that connects bones to muscles in the body), especially in the Achilles' tendon of the heel. Take medication with food.
Fatigue, headache, somnolence, nervousness, dry mouth, GI disorders (eg nausea, gastritis) & allergic symptoms
Insomnia
Classification: Antihistamine
seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis, food & drug allergic reaction.
in combination, tablets combine the antiinflammatory and antiallergic effect of the corticosteroid (betamethasone) with the nonsedating antihistamine
eg rash.
