THE RECTORS RAMBLINGS

It is amazing how simple things can mean so much. When I was 16, interested in helping out in the inner city neighborhood which surrounded my church, one Sunday afternoon I walked down an alley to Christ Center, a former school turned Jesus Freak commune. No one answered the door, so I crept in and followed the sound of singing. In what I later learned was the chapel, there was a circle of people singing Lord of the Dance and learning to dance the Horah. They didnt ask me who I was or what I wanted, they just opened the circle and let me in. So began a two year adventure of playing pied piper, rounding up kids for a Sunday afternoon Junior Church program from poorest neighborhoods in my home town, and spending my Friday and Saturday nights helping to staff a coffee house. When I left Lexington and went off to college I was invited to attend an Episcopal Church. I was bemused by the kneeling and standing (nothing like anything Id ever seen in the Methodist Church). But, at the end of the service, a woman in front of me sprang up like a Jack-in-the-Box, asked me who I was and where I was from and introduced to everyone within the church. Within a month I was teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir and working with the youth group. The rest of that adventure should be obvious. What was key to both was a real welcome; the opening of a door to a new face. Each was a life-changing experience for me; not only for where they led me, but also because of the example they gave. As I said last month, first and foremost I think of the church as family. Beyond that I think that it must be open; a family which welcomes new members all of the time. This calls for a certain kind of attention, because we are used to relaxing in our knowledge of who is in our family circle. But if we can be open to it, if we can

remember how we have been welcomed when we were strangers, then our family here can be a nourishing and life-changing group for all who come through our doors.

This is a Book Every Parent Should Read!

Over the summer I usually pick up my reading list that I left hanging at the end of the previous summer. So, I picked up this book and came away with the desire to share this with everyone at St. Andrew's especially with parents of children from infant to teenagers. Kenda Creasy Dean is a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary and is well respected throughout the greater Church. In this book, her words enlighten on how to raise and nurture our children with a strong sense of faith. Her words challenge our current culture of Church. Her words are difficult to swallow at times. Her words reassure that we are on the right path. Most importantly I think her teaching encourages us to push beyond ourselves in the way we think and the way we live, being more of the person God intends us to be. Every parent should read this book. Not only all parents but grandparents, uncles, aunts, teenagers, anyone who cares about children and about the future of the Christian faith. I invite you all to join me in the Patio Room, Sunday mornings beginning September 11. We will be covering a chapter each week through November 6. Books can be purchased online. Barnes and Nobles also has books available. Blessings, Mark+

THANK YOU FROM THE BARGAIN BOX

We received the following letter of appreciation from Director Kathy Vezzetti to thank St. Andrews for the quantity and quality of our donations which help make their program a success. Dear friends at St. Andrews: Every year Bargain Box of Wilmington distributes their free vouchers in July. This year 25 religious, secular as well government agencies received $9,900 worth of Bargain Bucks. Recipients include:Good Shepherd Ministries, Catholic Charities, First in Families, New Hanover County Health Dept., Interfaith Refugee Ministry, Wilmington Interfaith Hospitality Network. Bargain Buck vouchers are redeemed by clients of the participating agencies who use them to meet their clothing and other basic needs. Through this collaborative effort, the Bargain Box reaches deeper into the community and makes a significant mark in helping to alleviate poverty. Linda Chance, Regional Director of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh, Cape Fear Deanery recently wrote of the Bargain Bucks program: We know that these vouchers are a tremendous gift to our families who sometimes arrive at our door without shoes, torn and tattered clothing or in need of a nice outfit for a job interview. Youre not there to hear their heartfelt thanks, so on their behalf we want you to know that your generosity and caring spirit has helped many, many families over the years. We couldnt do it without the generous donations from the community, and I THANK YOU. Lets keep up the good works. As our motto says: If we share what we have, we will all have enough. Kathy Vezzetti, Director Bargain Box of Wilmington

CHRISTIAN FORMATION CLASSES

FOR CHILDREN BEGIN SEPTEMBER 11 AT 10:00 A.M.

RECTORS FORUM IN SEPTEMBER

In September we will be looking at the Celtic Church; the Irish and Scottish churches which originally brought the Gospel to England. It is a tradition rich in imagery and story which has greatly influenced the Anglican tradition. In its modern incarnation it has brought new life to worship and private prayer. So join us on Sunday mornings at 10, beginning September 11, for Celtic Christianity: Myth, Tradition and History.

St. Andrews offers classes for children on Sunday mornings during the program year. Our pre-school class includes ages two through four concentrating on learning Bible stories, prayer, art responses, and fun. Kindergarten through third grade learn through a Montessori-style curriculum called Godly Play. Our older children will be bringing those Bible stories to their everyday life with the Real and Relevant lessons. Adult classes will be offered during the 10 oclock hour and nursery is available as well. Questions may be directed to Laura Wells. 256-3034 or Laura.Wells@standrewsonthesound.org

NEWTON GROVE BOOK BAGS

Muchas Gracias to all of you that supported the Newton Grove Book Bag Ministry. It has been a huge success and there are 133 very eager students that will be enjoying the fruits of all of your efforts. There are so many people that participated that I cannot begin to name them all individually, so please take this note as my word of gratitude for all that you do to support this mission. We had a special Godsend from S.O.A.R. (Success through Outreach, Access and building Relationships), club members of Cape Fear Community College that delivered several boxes of supplies. They were put to good use! Also, I would like to personally thank Dr. Garrett who gave us 57 toothbrush and floss kits for the kids. Everyone working together makes a big difference in the life of a child. Kathy Laing

DO YOU WANT FINANCIAL PEACE?

Dont conform, transform. Dave Ramsey says, Normal is broke! So be weird! Holy Cross is hosting "Financial Peace University" Dave Ramseys thirteen-week program designed to teach families how to get out of debt, stay out of debt and build wealth. The program covers everything from putting together a monthly spending plan that really works to knowing what insurance to buy and what to avoid, planning for retirement and setting financial goals with your spouse (no more arguments about money!). The class will meet Wednesday evenings beginning October 5, 6:30-8:30 p.m. and is open to singles and couples. A nursery will be provided. . The cost is $100.00 per household. Checks can be made out to Holy Cross.

YOUTH CONFIRMATION CLASSES

Confirmation classes will be held for youth this program year. Classes will begin this fall for students in 8th through 12th grade. We will be using the Confirm Not Conform curriculum which empowers students to voice their personal faith as well as the Episcopal faith. Bishop Daniel will visit us on April 15, 2012. If you are interested in participating in these classes please contact Laura Wells (256-3034) or Mark Powell (256-3034) by September 15.

I encourage you to explore the website: Daveramsey.com. Click on classes. People who have taken the course say, "It changed my life" in a positive way. And lastly, some pretty amazing statistics: The average household taking this course paid off 5,300.00 in debt AND saved $2,700 in just the first 90 days of the course! Space is limited, so sign up soon. Our own Andy Atkinson will be facilitating the program and you can contact him at http:// www.andyatkinson.com/ or 910-228-8727.

EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE TO NATIONAL CATHEDRAL

(CNN) -- Washington's National Cathedral sustained "significant damage" during Tuesday's 5.8 magnitude earthquake in northern Virginia, particularly its dramatic central tower and in its flying buttresses, the church said. Called the "Gloria in Excelsis," the cathedral's central tower is the highest point in the nation's capital, rising to a greater height than even the Washington Monument. No one was injured in the quake, the church said in a statement. There have been no major injuries immediately reported in areas affected by the quake, which struck Tuesday afternoon about 40 miles northwest of Richmond. Three of the tower's four pinnacles, or corner spires, were damaged, the church said in a statement. Cracks have appeared in some of flying buttresses, though the buttresses supporting the central tower appear to be sound, the church said in a statement. Stonemasons and structural engineers were assessing building damage on Tuesday evening.

PRESCHOOL NEWS
We are ready to start our 10th year of preschool at St. Andrew's and cannot wait for the children to come back. We had two fun camps this summer with lots of games, crafts and recreation. We look forward to another successful year and I want to thank all of the teachers for their continued commitment to our school. They are a fine group of women! We are truly blessed to have them. Have a great summer. Fondly, Catharine Hedrick

The smiles tell it all! The children of Iglesia La Sagrada Familia (Episcopal Church of the Holy Family) in Newton Grove had just received their fully-stocked backpacks in time for the first day of school. This was the seventh year of this ministry at St. Andrew's. It began in 2005 when 79 students received bookbags. In 2011, bags were delivered for 133 students including 23 in high school. The bags were provided with donations from the ECW and individuals, and were organized by grade and gender with a suggested list of supplies in each bag. They were then placed on a table in church for parishioners to pick up and return filled within two weeks. This is clearly one of the most widely supported ministries at St. Andrew's. A multitude of thanks to Kathy Laing for chairing this worthy endeavor, to the ECW, to those who gave monetary donations, to those making the delivery trip, and to all our parishioners who gladly filled a backpack with supplies and with love. And thanks be to God.
