HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the

the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which
has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor
and weapons for the gods. We create our own "armor and

Just a few points to mention in this Briefing.
First, remember the change we’ve made in our
socials for the rest of the year. We won’t have
the big Halloween party or the Christmas party.
Instead, we’ll combine our Thanksgiving feast
with our Christmas party. We will, however, have
the regular get togethers in October and
December. I suggested a movie night for our
October social. If you like that idea, let Pete
know.
Next, I’ll be reviewing crew members ranks in
the coming months. I know some of you are in
line for promotions, Others may need to take
OTS or OCC or complete a project to qualify for

Zoë Saldana is the latest actor set to join the
bridge crew of the new J.J. Abrams-directed
“Star Trek” movie, according to online trade
news posted today. She will be playing Uhura.

is currently filming the James Cameron sci-fi fea-

Roddenberry’s show back in 1966. She joins the
already-cast Zachary Quinto as Spock and Anton
Yelchin as Chekov, with Leonard Nimoy also

crew’s early days at Starfleet Academy,

Roddenberry added that he had met new exec-

seems like a great writer...from what I hear when
I talk to people, he’s got the mind to write Star
Trek. He knows Star Trek he’s a fan.”
However, Roddenberry worries that the new
film, like Enterprise, will run into problems with
continuity. “It’s always tough when you go
against “established things,” he said. “I’d prefer
them, when I say them I mean Paramount and
everyone to wait a few years. I’m hesitant on the
prequel.” Roddenberry added that he had not
read a script, which he believes is because he

guy.” Roddenberry closed by saying that he is
excited and looking forward to the movie despite
his reservations.
Meanwhile, TrekMovie.com reports that Paul
McGillion - a popular actor from Stargate Atlantis
whose fans lobbied to return his character to that
science fiction franchise after being written out
during the past season - has auditioned to play
Scotty, joining a list of hopefuls already said to
include Martin Compston, Greg Hemphill and
James McAvoy. “Obviously it would be a great
honour to follow in James Doohan’s footsteps,”
said the Scottish-born actor, who currently lives
in Doohan’s home country, Canada.
And although the role of young Spock has been
cast with Zachary Quinto taking over from
Leonard Nimoy, Adrien Brody is now revealing
that he did speak to Abrams about the role. MTV
Movies Blog quoted Brody as saying, “I did talk
to J.J. ...that would have been cool. I told my
parents. They got a kick out of it. ‘I may be
Spock!’ Oh, well.” He joked that he should have
tried the Vulcan salute to convince Abrams to
give him the role.

Meanwhile, original Sulu George Takei hinted
not only that his character may return on Heroes
following a season premiere shocker, but sug-
gested as well that he might turn up in the Star
Trek film. “I wouldn’t be too surprised if I am,” he
said to Entertainment Weekly. As for his other
gig, “Nothing is what it seems on the surface of
Heroes...chortle.”

Karl Urban Latest Name To Surface in

The latest name to surface in the Star Trek
casting rumour mill is very familiar to genre fans.
It’s Karl Urban, who played Caesar in Xena and
Eomer in The Lord of the Rings, who may be
under consideration to play a villain or a major
character depending on which story on reads.

with a story that Urban would be playing “the Big
Bad Romulan” in J.J. Abrams’ eleventh Star Trek
feature film. The IESB also reported that the
movie’s storyline concerns Romulans interfering
with Earth’s timeline...a description that sounds a

Complete TNG Set To Include New Disc of
Features
The Star Trek: The Next Generation complete
series set that will be released on October 2nd
will have 49 discs, including some new special
features and an exclusive poster.
StarTrek.com has posted details about the new
set from CBS Home Entertainment and
Paramount Home Entertainment, which will
include all 176 episodes of the series plus
dozens of bonus features.
Each season set contains discs with bonus fea-
tures that examine the development of the crew
and memorable missions, as well as overviews
of each year of the Enterprise’s mission and pro-
duction and making-of featurettes. With the
exception of the 22-episode second season,

which covers six discs, each season’s 25-26
episodes and bonus materials are spread over
seven discs.
The fifth season subset contains a tribute to the
late Gene Roddenberry, while the final season
subset includes features on Captain Picard, The
Making of series finale “All Good Things…” and
a preview of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
The new special features disc includes a look
at the Next Generation legacy and impact 20
years after its premiere, a discussion of the
series’ visual effects, a look at alien guest char-
acters and their languages, profiles of the crew
and featurettes on sets, props and costumes.
The series is preserved in its original full screen
presentation with English 5.1 Surround and
Convention attendees: When calling conventions for infor-
mation, don’t call collect and don’t call too late in the
evening (many organizers list their home phone numbers).
