Week 1 Plans Overview

Week 1 Plans Overview and Preparation The focus for this week will be making the children feel comfortable and accepted in the school environment. It will also be on them identifying their names and counting. Plans Circle or Instructional Time Objectives Students will understand that being nervous about coming to school and missing their family is normal. Students will be able to identify their names. Students will understand what is expected of them during Center Time. Students will be able to work cooperatively in the centers. Students will be able to visually discriminate pictures and match them. Students will be able to use one-to-one number correspondence in counting. Materials Books related to the theme. A list of books recommended is found on page 7. A copy of the book The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn Craft templates on pages 17 and 18. Bags of small math manipulatives for the children to count (buttons or candy hearts). School Lotto Matching Game found on pages 33-35. Alpha Tunes CD or Jellyfish Jiggle song found on the website. Anticipatory Set Show the book The Kissing Hand and explain that this is a book about a little raccoon who was nervous about coming to school. His mom tells him about a family secret and this helps him feel better. Explain that you will be reading this book to them. Explain that they will also be learning each others names and playing at the centers. Literature Connection Introduce the book The Kissing Hand by doing a picture walk. Look through the book discussing the pictures and making predictions. Read the book to the class. Follow-up Discussion and Music Discuss what helped Chester feel less nervous. Explain that sometimes music and movement can help get rid of that nervous feeling also. Introduce the song The Jellyfish Jiggle. The video is found on the website. Even though this is the focus song for the Ocean theme, it is a great warm-up movement song.

Week 1 Plans - Day 1

Name Game Have the children go in a circle. Each child takes a turn rolling a ball to a different student each time. The person receiving the ball tells their name. This game could continue each day until the children can identify who they are rolling the ball to. Word Wall Each day hold up a few name cards (blank cards can be found on page 31 for you to print each childs name). See if the children can recognize their name. Do a few activities with each name. You can count the letters in each name, cheer each letter and discuss the beginning letter and related sound. Place each name under the appropriate letter on the word wall. Alphabet letters to use for the word wall can be found on pages 26-30 Math Lesson Warm-up Have a child call out a number. Do that many jumps or claps (or another movement activity). Lesson - Introducing the Math Center Hold up a clear bag of buttons or heart-shape candies. Have the children guess how many are in the bag. Demonstrate how to count them. Explain that there are bags in the Math Center. Together with a partner they will count how many are in each bag. They will come to you to confirm the amount. If they get the correct answer, they get a sticker or stamp on their tally sheet (found on page 32). Note: Have about five bags with different amounts of manipulatives (the amount will vary according to the age you teach). Number the bags and mark down the amount. You can refer to this when the children come to you with their confirmed amount. If they are correct, give them a sticker or stamp on their tally sheet. They can continue this activity until their tally sheet is completed. The amounts can change each day. This would be done in the Math Center. Literacy - School Lotto Matching Game - Displayed on the Website This game is played in partners with each player given the game board on page 33. Two copies of the game board would need to be made (one for each player). The picture cards on page 34 would be copied (2X), cut and placed in a container where the children can not see the picture when they draw the card out. The picture card would be placed on the appropriate square on the game board.

Literacy - School Lotto Matching Game Continued If it is a picture no longer required, it is returned back into the container and it is the other partners turn. The first person to have the board completed is the winner! This is a easy visual discrimination activity that is great to use for the first few days of school. Extension of the Game - Playing Rounds This game could be played quite quickly. To extend the playing time, have the children play the games in three rounds. The first person to win the game three times becomes the winner. The rounds chart is found on page 35 Learning Centers Introduction The children would be introduced to the Learning Centers. At this time, how the centers are rotated and expectations would be set. The rotations will vary, depending on the teacher. In kindergarten, I would have the children do the literacy and math centers as a compulsory activity. This could even be done as a whole group activity. If it is a craft for the bulletin board display, I would also have the children expected to complete this project. The other centers I would allow them to freely rotate. They are allowed to change as frequently as they wish but only to the centers that have space available. Number of Students at Each Center - Planning Aid In each center there might be a sign board where each child hangs a name tag, a clothespin, or any other item with his name written on it. Colored dots, clothespin outlines, or hooks would designate the number of children allowed at that center. Students may move to any space that displays that it is open. Possible Centers Since this plan caters to the first week of school, you may want to introduce one or two new centers each day, ensuring that the expectations are clear. Literacy Center Playing the School Lotto Matching Game. Writing Center Place markers, pencils, pens, paper and letter stencils in this center. The children can draw a picture of something that took place in the story The Kissing Hand or their family. They could also trace letters from using alphabet letter stencils. They could also be printing names from the word wall.

List of Materials for this Center Paper (newsprint, lined, unlined, stationary). Throughout the program you will find outlines to make shape books. Pencils Magnetic board, cookie sheets, or side of the file cabinet and magnetic letters Sponge letters Letter stencil templates Letter stamps Picture dictionaries (throughout the program you will find theme related pictures that can be used for this). Math Center The children will be counting manipulatives with different amounts in each bag. They will work in partners. Once they have counted a bag they will come to confirm the amount with an adult assistant or teacher. If they are correct, they will receive a sticker or stamp on their tally sheet found on page 32. Reading Library - A list of books related to the Friendship theme can be found below. Reading books, charts, big book and pictures would also be placed in this area

Art/Crafts (Painting Easels) The children would complete the raccoon craft displayed on the website. They would paint, cut and assemble the raccoon. The templates are found on pages 17 and 18. Block Center - Big and small blocks, boxes, boards, milk cartons and other containers. The children should also be encouraged to draw what they build so paper (graph) and writing materials would be included in the center. Sensory - Sand/Water/Rice Home Living/Creative Play - Dress-up Center( puppets) Furniture, appliances, dolls, telephone, telephone books, dress-up clothes, cook books and recipe cards and newspapers would be included here. Note: This is a necessary center to include in the preschool program but optional for kindergarten especially if you lack the space. Note: In this theme, the center could be as simple as the children making the paper bag puppets and acting out their favorite part in the story The Kissing Hand. Community Center (grocery store, doctors office, restaurant, etc.) Science - Books about raccoons. This center will vary depending on the theme you are working on. Social Studies - could include books about being a good friend. Games and Puzzles Listening Center Computers Assessment: Observe children during Center Time and assess if they are able to complete the activities that were introduced at Circle Time.

Materials A copy of the book The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn An informational book about raccoons. A copy of the emergent reader A Retelling of the Kissing Hand as a predictable chart, the big book version or displayed on the smartboard would be prepared for all the children to view as the reading process is being modeled. The reader and the different versions are found in links on the website. Bags of small math manipulatives for the children to count (buttons or candy hearts). Paper bag puppet template found on page 19. School Lotto Matching Game found on pages 33-35. Alpha Tunes CD or Jellyfish Jiggle song found on the website. Anticipatory Set Explain that you will be reading the The Kissing Hand again and after they will be making puppets to act out their favorite part of the story. They will also be making their own book (emergent reader) about the story. They will be able to read this to others after. They will continue to be counting in the Math Center. Warm-up Sing The Jellyfish Jiggle again as a way getting rid of the nervous feeling they may be experiencing. The song is found on the website in video form. Literature Connection and Science Show a photograph of a raccoon (found on the website). Have the children identify the special characteristics they see. On the next page you will find interesting facts about raccoons. These could be read to the children or a information book about raccoons could also be used.

Interesting Raccoon Facts 1. RACCOON MEANS: Curiosity ~ Dexterity ~ Disguise 2. The record life span for a captive raccoon is 21 years 3. Raccoons will over-eat when nursing. 4. Baby raccoons are called kits. 5. Raccoons can easily unlock doors. 6. The heaviest raccoon recorded was 62 pounds. 7. Raccoons have a keen sense of touch. 8. The raccoon is one of the few animals that is successfully able to go from family pet back to a wild animal. Male raccoons, however, cannot stay captive for long. They are known to become aggressive as they mature and normally have to be set free. 10. The raccoon is also a strong swimmer, but only when forced to swim. It is a better climber. Connection to Literature If you have a simple informational book available about raccoons, this would be a good time to read it. Raccoon informational books would be placed in the Science Center. Name Game Play the Name Game again. Have the children go in a circle. Each child takes a turn rolling a ball to a different student each time. The person receiving the ball tells their name. This game could continue each day until the children can identify who they are rolling the ball to. Follow-up - Shared Reading Explain to the children that they will now be reading from the chart, the big book version, or from the Smartboard of the emergent reader called A Retelling of The Kissing Hand. Explain that after, they will be making their own book of the story to read to others (or pretend read). The emergent readers are found the website (big book and color version). Reread the page from the book where it says, Chester felt his mothers kiss rush from his hand, up his arm, and into his heart. Even his silky, black mask tingled with a special warmth. Discuss what is meant by a special warmth. Explain that when people feel happy and loved, it is described as feeling warm. This would be applicable when reading the emergent reader. Follow-up - Shared Reading Continued Read the emergent reader A Retelling of The Kissing Hand to the children using either the big book, predictable chart version that you have prepared in advance as a shared reading experience. The reading process would be modeled by pointing to the words, moving from left to right and top to bottom. A discussion would take place about how each word has a space between them. Center Activities Center activities and proper behavior would be reviewed. The same centers would be used as the previous day. New Center Activities Craft - Displayed on the Website The children will be making the raccoon paper bag puppet as displayed on the website. After, they can use the puppets to act out their favorite part of the story The Kissing Hand. The template is found on page 19. Literacy The children will be compiling and coloring A Retelling of the Kissing Hand and continue playing the School Lotto Game. Assessment: Observe children during Center Time and assess if they are able to complete the activities that were introduced at Circle Time.

Shared Reading Read the emergent reader A Retelling of The Kissing Hand again to the children using either the big book or predictable chart that you have prepared in advance as a shared reading experience. The reading process would be modeled by pointing to the words, moving from left to right and top to bottom. The children will be reading the selection with you. After, go back into the selection and have a few children point to letters that they can see, that are found in their name. Identify the letter name and sound as they point to the letters. Shared Writing After, have the children dictate what the think a good friend is. The following phrase would be printed on chart paper, Being a good friend is . The children would dictate what words would complete the phrase. As they are talking the teacher would be printing what is being said. Follow-up Writing Activity - Owl Craft Displayed on the Website Something to Hoot About Explain how an owl is often used in stories as being wise and giving people advice. Complete the owl craft displayed on the website where the owl is shown giving advice on how to be a good friend. The children would use the shared writing chart to complete the writing component part of the craft. The children could complete the writing component themselves or an adult helper could print it for them. This will vary depending on the age group you are working with. The template is found on pages 20-22.

Week 1 Plans - Day 4

Shared Reading Read the emergent reader A Retelling of The Kissing Hand again to the children using either the big book or predictable chart that you have prepared in advance as a shared reading experience. Again, go back into the selection and have a few children point to letters that they can see, that are found in their name. Identify the letter name and sound as they point to the letters Connection to Literature and Math Read Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews or another counting book. Continue to have children count math manipulatives or playing Rolling Dice Counting Game. Introduce Rolling Dice Counting Game This game is found on page 36. Throughout the program the children will be playing similar board counting games. This would be a good opportunity for them to learn how to use a die, count and move in the correct direction on the game board. The children shake a die. They move their player that many squares. If they land on a black circle they must start over from the beginning. The first person to reach the end first is the winner. A great game in counting, directionality and probability. Assessment: Observe children during Center Time and assess if they are able to complete the activities that were introduced at Circle Time.

Sharing and Cooking Day Children can share activities they completed during the week. Reading their emergent readers to partners would be a good choice activity for this day. Connection to Literature Prior to doing the cooking activity below the book Apple Farmer Annie by Monica Wellington could be read to the children. This book touches on how the apples were sorted prior to being taken to the market. Possible Cooking Suggestion - Connection to Math Each child brings in a different fruit to share. The fruit is mixed together to make a friendship salad. Prior to making the salad the fruit could be sorted in various ways (type, color and size). They could also we weighed and measured. After the fruit would be washed and cut to make the salad. Drama The children could act out their favorite part of the book to the rest of the class The Kissing Hand using the paper bag puppet they made.

This game is played in partners with each player given the game board below. The pictures on page 34 would be copied and cut (2X). These would be placed in a container. Each child takes a turn picking up a picture . They place the picture on the appropriate square on the game board below. If it is a picture no longer required, it is returned back into the container and it is the other partners turn. The first person to complete the board is the winner.
