The Catholic Church of Sanger and Del Rey

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time -

September 4, 2011

"If two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father." -- Matthew 18:19

Reading 1 -- Warn the wicked, trying to turn them from their ways (Ezekiel 33:7-9). Psalm -- If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Reading 2 -- Owe nothing to anyone, except mutual love (Romans 13:8-10). Gospel -- If two agree about anything for which they pray, it shall be granted to them (Matthew 18:15-20). A MESSAGE OF LOVE In the final verses of today's Gospel reading Jesus says that when two or three are gathered in his name, "there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20). So we understand that fraternal correction is always undertaken with Jesus present to us. Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing for us to do, it is a necessity. The Lord tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he "does not speak out" to dissuade a person from evil, then he, too, will be held responsible. We live in a "do your own thing" age when moral objectivity is often ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is one of love, our motives cannot ever be misinterpreted. As St. Paul writes, "Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law" (Romans 13:10). PARISH CLERGY Rev. Peter Quinto, RCJ, Pastor Email: pyquinto@aol.com Rev. Send, O Lord, holy apostles into your Church.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE CO-RESPONSABILIDAD DE TESORO August 27 & 28 St. Mary $ 2,830.00 St. Katherine 339.00 Total 3,169.00 Ongoing Faith Formation 776.00 Building Fund 10.00 May God bless you for your continued support of our church. SECOND COLLECTION Todays second collection is for the Church Maintenance Fund. THEY "They cleaned up the park." "They put out fresh bread." "They fixed the elevator." Behind every "they" is a real person. Look at any ordinary object, like a pencil. How many people did it take to make it? Someone planted the tree, someone felled it; others hauled it, cut it down to size, added lead and an eraser, packaged it, shipped it, and put it on a store shelf. "They" are millions of people ensuring we have the things we need and each is a reflection of God. God is not the farmer harvesting the wheat or rice for our tables, but God made the farmer and keeps his heart beating for his daily tasks. God is the essential "behind the scenes" person, the real presence behind every "they." God is behind everything in the entire universe. And when we finally find God, our lives become transformed with true gratitude. LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW Offer simple words of thanks to anyone who does a service for you. Nothing is too unimportant to acknowledge. No one is unimportant enough to be overlooked. MISSION STATEMENT As faithful disciples of Christ, we, the Catholic Community of St. Mary & St. Katherine, proclaim our threefold mission: to worship God, to share our faith, and to serve those who are in need.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Lord Jesus Christ, shepherd of souls, who called the apostles to be fishers of men, raise up new apostles in your church. Teach them that to serve you is to reign, to possess you is to possess all things. Kindle in the young hearts of our sons and daughters the fire of zeal of souls. Make them eager to spread your kingdom upon earth. Keep our present religious and seminarians healthy, both physically and spiritually. Grant them courage to follow you, who are the Way, the Truth and the Life, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR A NEW BISHOP Almighty God, send your Holy Spirit to guide those who will advise the Holy Father in the selection of the next Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno. May he have the zeal of Saint Paul, the priestly gifts of Saint John Vianney, the wisdom of a loving father and brother, and most of all, the heart of your Son, Jesus. We ask that the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us, and Saint Therese, our patroness, join us in this prayer, which we make through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
