The GTCC Library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification to arrange non-fiction books on
the library shelves downstairs on the 1st floor. Dewey call numbers are divided into parts. In an
online library catalog record, a space separates the sections of the Dewey call number. On the
actual book label, the sections are separated into several lines. When dates are included, they
are on the last line of the call number.
Example:
419.725
Becomes book label: C36
1986
419.86
That is shelved before:
C381h
Further Explanation:
• Every Dewey Decimal call number begins with three numbers.
Example: 003 is never written as 3
• Numbers to the left of the decimal point are whole numbers.
Therefore, 015 comes before 150
• Numbers to the right of the decimal point are decimal numbers.
Therefore, 970.13 comes before 970.3
The following Dewey call numbers / books are in correct shelf order for the reasons given:
1. 970
2. 970.01 - is larger than 970
3. 970.13 - is larger than 970.01
4. 970.3 - (970.300) is larger than 970.13 (970.130)
a. Place an X in one of the blank boxes below where the Dewey call number /
book labeled 970.245 should go.
1.
2.
F
T649
Who is the author of the books starting with the call number F T649?
Final Question:
