to focus the mind. It is important to add that not all rituals are spells. When was the last time you blew out the candles for a birthday wish? You can change consciousness if will, emotion and desire are strong enough. Before you blow out those candles, close your eyes and ponder what you want. The candles blowing out are only a symbol for the mind. Faithful magick spirals in the thoughts of humanity. The flow of nature seems to be a factor in magickal work. The Great Spirit has rhythm with tide. We are part of the flow and our magick should run parallel with it. The Wheel of the Year waxes and wanes; so does the moon. Similarly, so should our magick spells.

Going with the flow also includes correspondences to symbolically focus consciousness. Herbs, plants, days of the week, tools, colors, numbers, directions and many other correspondences can aid magickal spell work a great deal. Like the ingredients to a delicious cake, the spell must also have the right components. There is no doubt in magick. A second of doubt will bring desire to its knees in execution. The best thing to do is to plant a spell like a seed and forget about it. In addition, make sure the spell is kept a secret. The mere thought forms of another can bring the spell to its demise. The only exception is if you are part of a working magickal circle. In the Continued on page 4

Spells and Magick

Continued from Page 1 case of many directing a pure will, the results can be phenomenal. Another word of advice is to always contemplate the desired results of a spell with visualization. Create a mental image of what it is that you want. As I understand it, the most powerful magick spells a person can cast are the spells that are the most personal. There is no set doctrine for magickal things. It is true we can stand on the shoulders of giants to learn ancient traditions written and verbal, moreover, the seeker heeds only to Gaia. I wish people would stop saying that they practice white or black magick also! Power only manifests itself in balanced situations. Equilibrium is the way of magick. Real magick is only gray. Nothing in nature is good or evil. The notion of nature is that it simply exists. The spells and magickal intentions of adept practitioners mirror nature. White or black magick is off balance and will fall sooner or later. Who wants to have weak magick? Are you familiar with the Middle Pillar in the Golden Dawn magickal tradition? The focus was on the Middle Pillar for a reason. Learning spells, creating magick is a life long engagement. What works for you may not work for someone else. A strong will mends a strong spell. You must crave the wish with thirst. Magick is inside us. Its in our thoughts. Anything outside of the psyche only acts as an extension of the will. .. So mote it be.

Living in the Moment vs. Karma

by Nightshade

y whole life has been living in the moment, and look where I am: in Federal prison! That makes me reflect back, were the moments worth it? Most of the time, I will say no, but sometimes, when I am really being honest, I see the highs and the lows that I had were magnificently both ends of the spectrum. See, I lived in the so-called underworld, not the Hollywood versions, but the real life, underground network of people and lifestyles that are on the rims of normal life. I came outside at night. I stayed inside houses, hotels, stores and cars during the day. I was super high all the time from shooting speed. I was hitting licks mainly at night, breaking into mailboxes while wearing high heels, pink hair and fake silver eye lashes! I was writing checks in strangers names, and using credit cards in other peoples names. All day and all night I bought it ALL! I figured it was a victimless crime because obviously the people I was impersonating werent themselves when the surveillance video was watched, so I stupidly thought only the rich institutions they banked with were ultimately affected.

feels like right now. Help me to ignore the allure of the fast life, the super highs and the money and to only remember the chaos, the tiredness and the desperation. I choose [my son]. I choose me.

These people have provided me with information, guidance, care, and friendship. I hope everyone can find those influential people in their lives. In closing, I ask my Lady and Lord, Isis and Osiris, to continue to bless all of us. Merry Meet, and Merry Part, and Merry Meet again. Blessed Be. Chris @ Estelle

What Are Runes?

By Jayson @ Ramsey ebster's defines rune as "a character of the earliest Teutonic alphabet." While this definition is how most people think of a rune, the term originally meant a "mystery" or a "secret." References to runes in the Icelandic Eddas and Sagas at times specify written (carved) characters, but far more often a rune is understood to mean a magic spell or charm. Because these spells involved chanting a verse and carving staves (rune symbols), it seems likely that the staves became the primary definition of rune during Christian times when magic fell into disuse but staves continued to be carved wherever our Northern European ancestors lived and traveled. When we speak of runes now, we most often think of the 24 staves of the Elder Futhark. Although some of these runes can be found on rock -carvings dating back thousands of years, the earliest inscription of the entire futhark comes from a stone in Sweden from the start of the 5`" century (1,600 years ago). The runes are called a futhark because they do not follow the A-B order of an alphabet; instead, they are named after the phonetic value of the first six staves: F,U, Th, A, R, K. This ordering of letters is unique among the world's writing systems, and it is believed that each symbol was given its place due to its relationship to the runes that come before and after it. The futhark can also be divided into three aettir (clans or families) of 8 runes each. We know these aettir have significance because they were maintained as three separate groups even when the number of runes shrank to 16 in the Younger Futhark, but precisely what that significance is remains a topic of speculation. Each rune represents a phonetic value, but it also has a meaning. For example,

by Paul @ Stiles

Fehu is the equivalent of the "F"-sound in English and means "cattle" or "wealth." There are scores of books about runes, many of which contain their authors' own interpretations of what the runes mean. Keep in mind that what an author has to say about any particular rune isn't necessarily wrong, but it isn't necessarily right either-it is merely their opinion. What we know for sure about the meanings of the runes comes from three ancient runepoems that offer a window into our ancestors' world-view. Outside of these poems, it is up to each individual to determine what the runes mean in your own life. If what an author says about a rune rings true with you, use it. If not, throw it out. The key is that you apply critical thought to each symbol--only then will the runes come alive to you. As Heathens, we take pride in our heritage and go to great lengths to insure that our practices are rooted in our culture and history. It is because of this that I grit my teeth in frustration when perusing so many of the popular rune books or other Asatru/Odinist-related texts. One does not need to be a Heathen to author a book on the subject; one merely needs a desire to make money from writing about it. While I have no problem with a profit motive, I do take issue with anyone pimping out my ancestral traditions for a quick buck. Attempts to tie the runes to gemstones, the Tarot, I Ching, colors, astrological signs, or other pop-occult ideas have no foundation outside their authors' imagination. The runes are an essential part of the inheritance that our forebears have handed down to the Folk of today. To throw them into the grab-bag of New Age fads devalues the gift our ancestors have given us. Those of us who choose to accept their gift should do so not because the runes seem cool, trendy, mystical, or magical but because they are carved into our DNA. It is up to each of us to emulate Odin's example, journey within, and claim the runes for ourselves.

t would seem theres no shortage of opinions amongst Pagan practitioners regarding how we should approach issues of addiction, mental health (psychotropic) medications, prescription (or overthe-counter) drugs, and the many myriad professional dedicated to helping us with such issues.

A large part of the allure of Paganism in general is the lack of hard and fast, set-in-stone rules, and the selfreliance and self-dependence to determine each of our own unique spiritual and life journeys. Mistakes will be a part of each of our lifes experiences, sure, but regardless of whether we follow Wicca, Odinism, Buddha, Native American Shamanist or any other path (Pagan or otherwise) the challenge is to be mindful and learn from those mistakes AND to avoid repeating them. Personally, Ive endured and caused enough suffering. In March of 2010, following seven years and two months in the TDC, I was released to discretionarymandatory supervision. By the time of my release, I had developed a substantial attitude of negativity toward anyone that suggested I might benefit from AA, NA, MHMR or any sort of psychiatric, psychological or self-help counseling. I couldnt have been more wrong. My ego and pride told me that I could handle anything that came along outside, in the free world, merely because Id already managed to handle so much while incarcerated. Years previously, Id been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and PTSD, and I thought Id managed both with no help from the unit doctors. So, with that in mind and with a word or two from some wellmeaning Pagan friends whore of the

ve heard of lots of phenomenon regarding the perception of detecting energy or magick. My perception of energy is how I read physical sensations and how my Spiritual Intuition twitches. For genuine emotional energy, I feel my scalp tighten and my sense tells me its real. For raw energy generated in ritual or spell, I feel the crackle of static electricity along my skin and my consciousness seems to float like Im an observer of the event rather than a participant. For negative energy, I feel a tingle in the back of the neck and sense a foul taint, like sludge or the instinctual fear you get that warns of danger. When I project energy I feel my heart thunder through my body and my veins will protrude, my skin will flush and grow warm. Have any of you felt or perceived similar? Dont be alarmed if not. You may experience it visually by being able to perceive a myriad of colors. You may just KNOW without physical sensation. In the end, all of these are okay. Magick and energy are available to anyone who can apply their Will and if you believe, the energy is there. Know it. FEEL it, however you may. In the words of an RPG Your imagination is as real as your fist. The working of energy in a Wiccan is also a distinct feeling, slightly different in people. Ive at times experienced, with the above mentioned feeling, vibration in my bones and muscles. During Astral projection, Ive even done this: as I envisioned my Spirit Body arms lifting out of my Physical Body, my Physical Bodys arms flopped up once. I didnt even twitch a muscle. Amazing! As a last word, I encourage all to examine all of magicks subtleties, and evaluate whatever you experience. You may be able to skyrocket you magick! Blessed Be and Good Fortune everyone!

Realizing how irrational this sounded, and sinking deeper into my depression, I finally reached out for help from the local MHMR and crisis hotline. Seaxneat
Mystery God of the East Saxons by Greggory@LeBlanc
Part 1
Germanic tribes, and they were forced to renounce these gods or die. Of the secondary sources, the most respected is Jacob Grimms Teutonic Mythology. Grimm gives us the name in Old Saxon as Sahsnot. Seaxneat, Saxnt, Sahsnot these names, though in three language forms are cognate. The favored etymology of the late 19th century was Sword Friend or Sword Companion. With the coming of the 20th century came advances in the fields of both etymology and comparative mythology, a relatively new science. One of the people at the forefront of this field was Georges Dumzil. He proposed that the name meant Saxon Companion or Saxon Friend. These are still the favorite etymologies. So where do we stand in relation to our question; what can we learn from a name, and where we find it? We know that Seaxneat (or one of his language cognates) was known among the Saxons of the Continent and Essex. We know also that he was extremely important to both of these peoples. In the case of the East Saxons, Seaxneat was seen to be the most ancient of their ancestors. He was the progenitor of the Saxon people. He was their friend and their companion. He gave them their name, their lands, and the luck of their tribes and history shows us that this luck was great. Finally, Seaxneat was the ancestor god to whom the ealdormen and Cynnings of Essex traced their lineage. In this, Part 1, of a two part writing, I have relied mainly on linguistic evidence. In Part two, I will address the comparative mythology, and discuss Seaxneats place in the Germanic holy trinity.

services or counseling of any kind. She had forbidden me to drive, although I lived in a rural farm community about nine miles from nowhere. I was utterly unable to get the job she was demanding of me without driving into town. Add to this, my felony background and seven years out of the loop and the deal seemed cemented shut against me. Ultimately, as I came to discover with MHMR, the problem was primarily one of timing and of adequately convincing them of the urgency of my situation. Lets not forget that I was unconvinced myself when I got out and so, by the time I fully came to grips with how desperate I was becoming AND reached out to make the crisis call, AND by the time MHMR decided I did NOT qualify for emergency treatment, my self-medicating tendencies had come full circle: I ended up with a brand new DWI and twelve years TDC and a lot of broken promises and broken hearts. Some of you will know me. I want to make it clear that Im making the decision to offer this contribution to the Greenman newsletter based on my sense of responsibility and concern for my brothers (and sisters) behind these walls, to let them see that because I allowed my ego, pride, addictions, and so forth to cloud my judgment and instill false confidence, I have to the TDCJ with a brand new sentence, a new conviction, and a whole list of new heartaches for my family. My accountability starts here. I sincerely hope that my negative experience might prove warning enough to encourage someone who reads this to make a better choice for themselves. If you even think you might benefit from MHMR, AA, NA or any kind of counseling, DONT WAIT! Go get it! Your freedom is simply too precious. Seeking help is not weak. It takes REAL courage to reach out Bright Blessings to All.

eaxneat was one of the chief gods of the East Saxons of Britain. He is, however, a god shrouded in mystery, and we know little about him from primary sources. Primary sources are in fact, few. We see his name only twice. Once in a baptismal vow forces upon the continental Saxons, and once in the genealogies of the ealdorman and Cynnings of East Saxons. So, what does a name, and the places we find them, tell us about Seaxneat? Lets look at this question using the tools of etymology and comparative mythology.

The 5th century migrations of the Germanic people brought Angles, Saxons, Jutes and a smattering of other Germanic tribes to Britain. With them they brought the gods. The genealogies the Anglo-Saxon nobles show that all of them traced their bloodlines to Woden, all save the East Saxons of Essex, and they traced their bloodlines to Seaxneat. This speaks volumes in and of itself. It makes it clear that they viewed Seaxneat as their most ancient ancestor, the progenitor of their people. In the 8th century, the Saxons of the Continent were being hard pressed by Charles the Nithling (Charlemagne). He had issued his infamous Saxon Capitulary, which included the Abrununtatio. This was a baptismal vow that compelled the Saxons to renounce three of their gods under pain of death; Thunear, Woden and Saxnt, the first two being the most known and worshiped gods in all of Germania. The Saxons would not have grouped an insignificant god with them. Saxnt appears to be so loved and ingrained in the hearts and minds of the Saxon people that he was grouped with two of the most important gods of all the

o what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. There are several documents that show, Albertus Magnus (13th century) stated a Magical Ring shall cure depression, and so forth. Another significant clue comes from the 14th century, Konrad Von Megenberg deliberately conferred with a magical Ring one has the power of fertility, and beauty. Further details are recorded in Dee's Quinti Libri Mysteriorum from angelic contacts giving them instruction to create enumerated magical items that included but not limited, to a Magical Ring "Lo,This is it. This is it, wherewith all miracles, and divine works and wonders were wrought by Solomon. Without this Thou shall do Nothing." The Archangel Michael, March 14,1582. Gonelli wrote, 1702 a ring could effectively invoke or banish nightmares. Undoubtedly, in the 19th century The Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite, Freemasonry General Albert Pike, 33 Classic Textbook, Morals and Dogma we find an Explanation of the Ring. That the Pentagram (Pentacle, Cabalistic Star), on this ring "Carries with it the power of Commanding the Spirits." Use it, he gives further instructions therein to "bind the demons of the air, the spirits of Fire, the specters of Water, and the ghost of the Earth." In the Holy Books of Thelema we find a passage of Equilibrium: "If he have the Wand in his right hand, let him have the Ring on his left. "Crowley's Magick In Theory & Practice.

Manly P. Hell, in his classic textbook, The Secret Teachings of all Ages, briefly gives Extract from Cornelius Agrippa Three Books of Occult Philosophy and numerous other Magicians describing the preparation of the magical ring. And so on. I cannot here enter at length into all the necessary preparations. But one may find them fully set forth in the proper book, of "Enochian Vision Magick" by Lon Milo Duquette, of which is perhaps one of the best examples to make a real magick Ring out of paper, or posterboard. ( I should add the same goes for 'thee' other Magical Items one might need.) And lo, if youre telling yourself you can't make a magical ring or other out of this, or that! Can you tell me what makes you believe you would be able to make such (Tools) out of the proper Metals in the First Place, if you could, eh? (or if you could, I'd love to hear from you in the next Newsletter), Even though "Traditionally" most Magicians on the Royal Path make

all their Magical Tools. But this is beyond most people. It could be argued the dedicated aspirant should, and would go out and learn ancient Metallurgic Techniques and construction. However for most of us at the time being, we must find other solutions to the puzzle; and follow out the Ordeals. Experimentation is encourage, for some of us, the finger on which the ring is worn is of utmost degree. Traditional Hermetic Elemental attributions are as follow: Thumb: Water Pointer: Fire Middle: Spirit Ring: Earth Pinky: Air If you ask me. I do believe this configuration is accurate. Especially, the middle Finger since its associated with "Spirit" You should always think three times-before flipping someone off.... Because your Spirit could be open for a Black Magician to grab!!! A Fyre-ing Squad Book Review by Phenyx-Fyre

Wizardry
by Phoenix Star The incarcerated pagan, there are few in the 1st world who are more limited in their practice. As with many of you, this comes from 1st hand experience. We are denied our requisite magickal tools: candles, herbs, oils, cauldron, chalice, pentacle, wand, and of course our athame. Often we are not permitted to gather for ritual, our Holy Days not respected by the administration, the few items we are permitted are often handled roughly, were all called evil out of ignorance, and a host of other indignities are visited upon us when we attempt to resolve those situation in the correct way, emphasizing our religious rights, the officers tell us we lost our rights when we got locked up. The problem is, many accept this as truth, even as evidence to the contrary stares them in the face. Members of the Book Religions certainly have their rights! What are we to do? While I dont have all the answers, this article, and other articles to follow, will attempt to give alternatives, help with resolution, and more. This is from a wizarding perspective, and not restricted to any religious doctrine or dogma. The focus is on reasonable allowances for the incarcerated practitioner, as it pertains to a magickal life and practice, the fundamentals of wizardry, for the incarcerated. One of the main things all incarcerated practitioners of magick need to learn is the rule of rules. Intention controls Results This rule of wizardry and magick is the practitioners will to manifest what he desires. This is your strongest and most useful tool. Other rules are important, but the above rule governs all others in our environment. The inherent negativity of the prison environment can be detrimental to your workings. You will need to be very clear in you intent before you begin a working. In addition, your intent will need to govern certain aspects of your practice. Officials will not allow a sharp (or dull!) athame. What we are allowed varies, but we can all cross that one off our lists. I have frustrated for years that I have never Continued on Page 11

Enchantment Encumbered
by Ashleen OGaea and Carol Garr here were you when you heard the call of the Goddess and the God for the first time? Some of you were lucky enough to be in the real world. You could go amongst the trees, the meadows and the streams. You could present yourself to the Moon and gather the needed ingredients for your works. But there are those of you, dear readers, that did not come to the Craft until you found yourself in this place where freedom is a thing which you long for in your dreams; a place where you cannot have your Bell, Book and Candle well the bell and candle anyway; a place where, for us, salt is contraband and libation is next to impossible. [Editors note: salt is contraband in TDCJ for Wiccans] Most books on the practice of Wicca agree on the most important workings, such as casting of the Circle, the Elements, the Four Corners [Quarters] and the Rede. Unfortunately, not many offer alternatives for those that have no access to the most basic of Craft tools. In Enchantment Encumbered, I have found (so far) one of the only books written for those of us in the Craft that either needs to tweak our way of doing things or are complete novices. In this book, Ashleen OGaea and Carol Garr strip the literature found elsewhere to its foundations and restructure it to a simpler vision of the Mothers and the Fathers message for those of us living in difficult situations. They did this because they have been in direct contact with and have a great desire to help Brothers and Sisters in the Arizona Department of Corrections. Their organization, Mother Earth Ministries, saw problems firsthand of being a follower of a Pagan path while in the prison system. They touch on the

topics of the history (or lack thereof) of Wicca and some of the other prominent Pagan paths today. The subject of Ethics is paramount throughout the entire book, so as to help guide the practitioner on their journey in the Craft. Most importantly, for those of us incarcerated, they offer alternatives to how to practice and think of our works without the benefit of the tools we take for granted in the outside world. Even though the primary focus of this book is restrictions, there is no shortage of the basics and foundations of Wicca. There are Wiccaning and Dedication ceremonies as well as Sabbat and Esbat observances included for the experienced practitioner as well as the novice. OGaea and Garr take the serious topic of Wicca in the prison system and offer a light to help guide us without judgment or superiority. This book, in my humble opinion, would be a boon to any Witchs education collection.

found a guide of any kind aimed at the incarcerated magickal practitioner. We are people, too. We matter! Yet we are overlooked, disregarded, and ignored. Some of this is due to past transgressions of other prisoners, and so doors close to the rest of us. The curious who only want something when its free, and will send off for anything if its free, are a drain on already stretched resources. To this end, I have compiled many notes and articles, in an effort to create a curriculum for the prisoner, much of which I will attempt to show in this newsletter, the first of its kind Ive seen. In a magickal tradition there are rules and ethics. These vary from tradition to tradition, but for now we will examine what I call the 1st Rule of Prison Wizardry. Each will be accountable to themselves At first glance, this seems obvious. However, if there is one Great Truth about prisoners it is that the majority seek to blame others for what theyve done. Rarely, if ever, do you hear an individual be accountable for themselves. The wizardly perspective is to be aware of, even sensitive to, the nature of our actions, and the ripple effect each causes. We are accountable for our selves First, as we determine the ramifications of the act. If the act will be negative in nature, we are to be cognizant of this, and take preventative measures. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of remedy. Sometimes, due to the Law of unintended consequences, something weve done will take a completely unexpected turn when this happens: be accountable. Dont wait until youre confronted on the matter (unless youre ignorant of it), own up to what youve done. Explain matters, but dont offer any excuses. Make it right if its possible to do so. This may seem difficult at first, but like anything you do and practice, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. However, remember its best to simply not do anything youll have to be accountable for thats negative. Explanations, apologies, and their like wear thin with repetition. What can be done to combat the persuasive, inherent negativity of prison? State of mind helps, but not enough in and of itself. Better understanding of yourself, others, your environment and the world allows you to reach a state of enlightenment that lifts the darkness. While the overall environment is inherently negative, this doesnt mean you have to be! Shine the light of positivity on others, bring laughter and ease wherever you go. Be kind, be upstanding, and be real. Kindness is often mistaken for weakness in prison, so be kind, but be fair, and be firm. Stand up straight, project an aura of confidence, and look people in the eye when you speak to them. Youll be pleasantly surprised. Above all, dont feed the machine. Avoid gossip, rumor or any sort of prison drama, including psychic vampirism, either on the giving or receiving end. You all know what Im talking about! Your business is yours, let others be theirs. The Law of Return ensures that no actions go unnoticed. Being magickal is about being positive, proactive, and making progress. Wizards believe in helping people. Wiccans believe in helping the Earth, and the most devout Satanist seen erroneously as the personification of evil while self-absorbed, still strives to be the best he can be. Youre only limited in what you can do by your imagination. Skills can be learned, its a matter of desire to do so. Be positive, be productive, and make progress. You do matter, and your magickal fulfillment will not come on its own. Be proactive. Dont put the pro in procrastination! Blessed Be, and Bright Blessings to you all, until next time.

The Kachina by II Feathers

The Hopis or Pueblo natives of the Southwest are all not just related by style of homes, but blood and history; for they came from the same families that came to the continent by way of the island spoken of as Mu, which is now under the Pacific Ocean. They, like Noah, fled to South America after being told the Creator was going to flood the world, for it was too sick to keep living as it was. Those who had their third eye open could hear this and listened. They were told to go east and dont look back. When you get to the next land, you mustnt stop. You must do homage to the four directions of the whole continent before you will be ready to settle down in your permanent homeland. So some clans used the landing point as the southern place, others went further down in South America, then were never seen again. Those that started northward made many stops. They would stay and build up homes in order to rest and prepare for winter and to replenish food or clothes. Sometimes they stayed too long, and years would go by and unrest would stir some to challenge the leaders of their clan, which led to a separation in order to avoid blood spill. Some would just leave with their followers, never to be seen again. Others would stay for the comfort of climate and abundance of food. While the leaders and followers of the old ways would warned them four times then would leave. We believe the ones who stayed were Aztec, Mayan, Incan and others who later became Mexicans. Due to their disobedience to the will of the Creator, He allowed them to be conquered by the Spanish. During this whole time we had different ceremonies we had to perform. At winter time would be the time to tell the stories of the history of the people from their beginning until the present. They tell these stories through dance ceremonies that have gone unchanged over the centuries it took to finally reach the land promised to the obedient. These dances can be observed in the summer by the general public; though the more important ceremonies are performed in underground ceremonial chambers called kivas, such as initiation into the priesthood society or kachina society. One group has taken up the role of caretaker to the gods and goddesses, and the other group lending their bodies to be used as vessels for the gods and goddesses to come join the people. In this way we are shown they are still with us and are living like we are meant to. This is all I will say for now. Ah young tish nee.
