Pirate Ship Fundraiser
Te Castlegar Early Childhood Advisory Council (CE-
CAC) works to improve community supports and services
for children 0 to 6. Many families in our community have
pointed out the need for toddler-friendly playground equip-
ment in our parks. In response to this identifed gap, CECAC
is now fundraising for a pirate ship playground component
that is specifcally designed for toddlers and wheelchair ac-
cessible. In partnership with the City of Castlegar, who has
agreed to install this equipment at Kinsman Park, we aim to
have this project completed by the fall of 2012.
On Sunday, September 11, members of our group will be
hosting dinner for the 24th Annual Toy Run at the Com-
munity Complex, as a fundraiser for this initiative.
CECAC will be ofering a delicious chili dinner (both
vegetarian and meat options) at $10/plate to members of the
public and Toy Run participants as they return to the Castle-
gar Complex from their ride around 3 pm. Cofee/tea and
cake will also be available for $2.50. All proceeds from this
dinner will go toward the purchase of the pirate ship.
For information about donating to the playground equip-
ment fundraiser (a charity receipt can be issued by request)
or the Castlegar Early Childhood Advisory Council, please
contact cecac.info@gmail.com or visit www.wkearlyyears.ca

Salmonella And Pets
Pet owners should remember to always wash their hands
thoroughly with soap and water afer feeding, handling or
cleaning up afer their pets.
Salmonella bacteria can be present on pet reptiles and am-
phibians such as snakes, lizards, terrapins, turtles and frogs.
It can also be carried by dogs and cats, even when they are
not showing symptoms of the disease. Foods for these pets
can also be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria, par-
ticularly pet treats, raw food diets, and foods for pet reptiles
such as fresh or frozen mice, rats and chicks.
Owners of pet reptiles and amphibians, in particular,
should clean surfaces that come into contact with these pets
or their food.
Salmonella bacteria can cause illness in owners and hand-
lers, and are easily spread to others if proper precautions are
not taken. Some people are more susceptible to infection
than others. Young children, seniors and those with weak-
ened immune systems may be unable to fght of the infec-
tion, and can get sick more easily than others.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, called salmonellosis,
typically start 6 to 72 hours afer exposure to a contaminated
product or animal. Symptoms include: Diarrhea, Fever, Ab-
dominal cramps, Nausea, Vomiting, Chills, Headache.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection usually last four to
seven days. In healthy people, salmonellosis ofen clears up
without treatment; however, people who experience severe
symptoms or who have underlying medical conditions,
should contact their health care providers if they suspect
they have a Salmonella infection.

Professional Development Workshop
Arts and Heritage organizations are facing many chal-
lenges. Meet those challenges head-on with this upcoming
professional development workshop in Nelson. Presented
by Leslie Tompson, this workshop will cover efective
board management, volunteer recruitment and manage-
ment, marketing and fundraising fundamentals for arts
and heritage organizations key elements for sustain-
ability. Travel subsidies are available on a frst come-frst
served basis for travel from communities in the Columbia
Basin, further than 50 km from Nelson.
With 28 years of professional experience, Leslie has ad-
vised, planned and executed numerous successful projects
and campaigns for a variety of non-proft organizations.
She has taught many workshops as well as Introduction
to Non Proft Management at Mount Royal University in
Calgary and An Introduction to Fundraising at Capilano
Universitys Arts & Entertainment Management Program.
Client comments about Leslie: I want to thank you for a
powerful workshop. I can see the path clearly now. I feel
relieved of time consuming eforts with low return and
will now make time for the things that I know will work.
Ofered by the West Kootenay Regional Arts Council
(WKRAC), the workshop will take place at the Kootenay
School of the Arts at Selkirk College in Nelson on Satur-
day, September 24 from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday, Sep-
tember 25 from 9 am to 1 pm. Preregistration is required.
Subsidies and spaces are limited so register early! Register
online at: www.tinyurl.com/3omzmwa
Afer the workshop on Sunday, WKRAC will hold
its Annual General Meeting, where WKRAC and its
member arts councils will report on their activities
throughout the year. For further information call
250-352-2421, toll free: 1-800-850-2787 or email: wk-
racassistant@telus.net. Workshop and travel subsidies
generously funded by the Columbia Basin Trust. Addi-
tional funding support provided by the Province of BC
through the BC Arts Council.

Bears? An Electrifying Solution
It is beginning to feel like fall and plums, apples, pears
and other fruit are the bounty of the season. But fall is
also the season when we ofen see bears in town taking
advantage of all the fruit that we make available. One
solution is electric fencing. Bear Aware will be hosting
a free electric fencing workshop on Tursday, Sept. 8 to
teach people how to use electric fencing to protect fruit
trees and chickens.
Fruit is a high quality food that allows bears to put on
fat quickly in preparation for hibernation. Huckleber-
ries, other native fruits and food in higher elevations can
supply bears with most of their nutritional needs. But if
huckleberries in particular are in short supply, bears that
would normally feed in the higher elevations come to our
communities looking for food and they fnd fruit, gar-
bage, chicke ns and other attractants.
Because domestic fruit trees grow near our homes,
bears feeding on the fruit beneath or on these trees may
learn to forage for other food near our homes. Bears can
also be quite destructive to chickens. It is ofen the chick-
en feed that attracts the bears initially, but they readily
learn to catch and eat the chickens once they fnd the food
in the coop. Most coops cannot withstand the eforts of a
determined bear.
Solutions? Pick your fruit as it ripens; clean up windfall
fruit as it falls; share fruit and picking duties with neigh-
bours; keep chicken feed cleaned up and keep chickens in
at night - and consider using electric fencing to protect
trees, orchards and chicken coops.
Te free electric fencing workshop, (sponsored by the
RDCK and CBT) will be held up Sproule Creek (Taghum)
on Sept. 8 at 10 am. For further information, contact the
Bear Aware Community Coordinator at nelsonrdck@
bearaware.bc.ca.
Learn how to live in bear country fnd out about more
solutions at www.bearaware.bc.ca. Please contact the Con-
servation Of cer Service at the RAPP line (1-877-952-
7277) with any bear sightings, property or safety concerns.

Public Input Process For
Front Street Park Improvements
Te piece of land next to the Kaslo Hotel belongs to the
Village of Kaslo and has been designated a green space
by the village council. It has been called many things
over the years: the Bowling Green, Spirit Square, Market
Square, and lately: Front Street Park.
For the past three years a small group of citizens have
been discussing the possibility of turning this plain square
of grass into an inviting public gathering place for resi-
dents and visitors alike. Future plans for a covered area,
some easy maintenance landscaping and a public wash-
room are all being considered.
Currently the closest public washrooms to the down-
town core are beside the Moyie (during hours of oper-
taion) and in the Kemball Centre (during of ce hours).
Neither of these washrooms are accessible to people in
wheelchairs or those with limited mobility.
Since the land is owned by the Village of Kaslo, what-
ever gets built there will become the responsibility of the
village to look afer. Tis public input process is to help
determine the level of public support for these suggested
park amenities and improvements. Also, in order to ac-
cess capital funding for this project there must be demon-
strated public support. Your participation and feedback
prior to September 30 is greatly appreciated. Survey avail-
able online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6B3RJ8J.
Survey will also be available in the Tuesday, September 13
edition of the Pennywise.
