Transition in Tunisia: Analysis of the National Constituent Assembly Elections September 7, 10:00 a.m. International Foundation for Electoral Systems 1850 K Street NW, 5th Floor Washington, DC 20006 Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited. If you would like to attend this event, please contact Laura Osio at losio@ifes.org.

The country that ignited the Arab Spring will hold its National Constituent Assembly (NCA) elections on October 23.

According to a national survey conducted by IFES in May, at least eight out of ten Tunisians said they needed more information in key areas including: voter registration, participating political parties, candidates and campaigns, where and when to vote, voting procedures and vote counting. Is Tunisia ready? What are the main challenges facing the electoral commission as it prepares for the polls?

Please join us for a conversation featuring IFES elections expert Rafael Lopez-Pintor on these issues and more. LopezPintor spent two months in Tunisia this summer as an electoral expert for IFES.

This event will be moderated by Michael Svetlik, IFES Vice President of Programs.

Book Launch: Playing with Fire: Pakistan at War with Itself September 7, 4:00-5:30 p.m. 5th Floor Woodrow Wilson Center Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center One Woodrow Wilson Plaza 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20004-3027 No RSVP listed

Speaker: Pamela Constable

From the book publisher: In Playing with Fire, acclaimed journalist Pamela Constable peels back layers of contradiction and confusion to reveal the true face of modern Pakistan. . . . Constable takes us on a panoramic tour of contemporary Pakistan, exploring the fears and frustrations, dreams and beliefs, that animate the lives of ordinary citizens . . . From the opulent, insular salons of the elite to the brick quarries where soot-covered workers sell their kidneys to get out of debt, this is a haunting portrait of a society riven by inequality and corruption, and increasingly divided by competing versions of Islam.

About the speaker: Pamela Constable, a Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center in 2010, serves as a South Asia correspondent for the Washington Post. She has been covering South Asia since 1999, and spent four years as the Posts bureau chief for the region, stationed in New Delhi and Kabul. Earlier, she spent nine years as the Latin America correspondent for the Boston Globe, and served as journalist-in-residence at the Pew International Journalism Program at Johns Hopkins Universitys School of Advanced International Studies. Constable is the author of the 2004 book Fragments of Grace: My Search for Meaning in the Strife of South Asia, which reflects on her experiences covering South Asia.

"Austria. Past, Present and Future" by Hannes Androsch book presentation and signing
Wednesday, September 7, 6:30 p.m. Embassy of Austria 3524 International Court NW Washington, DC 20008 Admission free. RSVP required: www.acfdc.org/eventsregistration or (202) 895-6776
Dr. Androsch will be available to sign copies of the book, cost for one book is USD $70, cash only please. Austria is no longer an "island of the blessed". It is time to reexamine the myths and opinions about this country. In this book, a team of noted scholars, experts and journalists take on the task of correcting the image of Austria and the Austrians. In the process they examine this countrys past and present, but also its future. This multifaceted book provides ample evidence that a love for Austria does not exclude criticism of it, that patriotism must not automatically mean glossing over the facts, and that it is essential to regularly

survey how Austria sees itself as well as how it is assessed by outsiders. With insightful essays and a wealth of carefully selected pictures, this deluxe edition provides an authoritative and comprehensive view of Austria. Hannes Androsch, born in Vienna in 1938, was minister of finance and vice-chancellor under Bruno Kreisky, directorgeneral of the Creditanstalt-Bankverein, and today is an industrialist. He is involved in many areas of public life and founded the non-profit "Hannes Androsch Foundation at the Austrian Academy of Sciences". Androsch is much in demand as commentator on current affairs as well as the publisher and author of numerous publications.

Nordic-Baltic Security in the 21st Century: Continued Transformation Toward a Larger Role in the World?" Wednesday September 7, 8:30 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Atlantic Council 1101 15th Street NW, 11th Floor Washington, DC 20005 RSVP: isp@acus.org or (202) 778-4968

The Atlantic Council is pleased to invite you to an all-day conference on Nordic-Baltic security, which will examine key strategic challenges for the countries of the Nordic-Baltic region, how to further strengthen regional cooperation, and how the region can play a larger role in transatlantic and global security. The Nordic-Baltic region has undergone a remarkable transformation since the end of the Cold War and the restoration of the Baltic states' independence twenty years ago. Today, the region is characterized by economic dynamism, deep EuroAtlantic integration, and robust stability. As we look to the next twenty years, increasing regional cooperation and integration offers the prospect of the region playing a much larger role in transatlantic and global security. This conference is the capstone event of the Council's Transatlantic Initiative on Nordic-Baltic Security, a year-long effort supported by Sweden's Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The Initiative seeks to raise the level of debate on Nordic-Baltic security issues in Washington, as well as to provide actionable and policy relevant advice on how to further strengthen Nordic-Baltic cooperation on security and defense issues in a transatlantic and global context. A compendium of issue briefs on Nordic-Baltic security, covering a wide range of topics, will be released at the conference and several of the compendium authors will serve as conference panelists. TEN YEARS AFTER 9/11 (August 23-September 30) Opening Reception September 8, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Pepco Edison Place Gallery 702 8th Street NW (202) 872-3396

Michael B Platt The Journey

"Ten Years After 9/11" is an exhibition featuring the work of thirty-nine international artists commemorating the tenth anniversary of the event of September 11, 2001.

Co-curators Helen Frederick and William Dunlap were determined to create a venue for artists to show work made in response to and in the wake of the cataclysmic events of 9/11. "It's not that artists were any more or less effected by the events of 9/11 than anyone else," says William Dunlap. "The difference is that they respond by making concrete objects that want to be seen." As Frederick and Dunlap explain, they curated the artists not specific artworks. In that light, "Ten Years After 9/11" gives voice to artists from Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Russia, Ireland, Germany and the United States, each bringing their personal perspectives and unique viewpoints to the cultural conversation. According to Frederick the exhibition explores how a rupture has been recorded, filtered, transformed and translated into powerful works of art over the past ten years. "Ten Years After 9/11" opens to the public on August 23rd with a reception Thursday September 8, 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery, 702 Eighth Street, NW. On September 11 at 4 p.m. Kurt Steger's Burden Boat Project will engage the public in a water-cleansing ceremony in the Kogod Courtyard between the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, 750 9th Street, NW. Recording /Responding to Loss and Recovery, a special panel discussion with participating artists moderated by Helen Frederick, takes place at The Pepco Edison Place Gallery on Tuesday September 13, 6-8 p.m.

-----------------------------------------About Danielle Bensky's work -----------------------------------------'Life-Force Struggle' Words by Michele Sarde In Danielle Benskys sculpture, life forces are at work through a ceaseless struggle to transcend limits. Its a struggle to reach upwards, refusing to admit the degradation of physical reality, an intrinsic assertion of our humanity, not against nature but joining her in the effort. Contrary to so many contemporary works of art haunted by darkness and destruction, these forms create joy, alleviate despair and show the finest of human qualities: spirit and flesh conjoined in a thrust towards an inner freedom bringing all else in its wake. The quintessentially human tends to express itself more and more in our time through the feminine, no longer woman-as-object, transformed and sometimes disfigured by men, but woman creating, who delights in contemplating her own ascending dream, and who, unlike Narcissus, looks into a moving mirror, a mirror moving with the world itself. It is this very woman that Danielle Bensky plucks out from the toughness of matter and for whom she dreams up a fragile yet harmonious equilibrium always reaching above eye-level. In the transition from sculpture to painting, we see not only an exploration of new resources involving color but above all the deployment within just two dimensions of an infinitely virtual space. This is reflective of the mental trajectory of our artist who needs to imagine a universe with fluid boundaries, a limitless spatiality consonant with immeasurable anguish in the face of chaos, a chaos which must be exorcised. An open secret haunts these painterly works whose paradigmatic themes, whether eye, knot, abyss, origin or matrix, are now revealed, now dissolved, now fractured, in a giddying back and forth, a spinning around, transpiercing and commanding artistic energies. This inner tsunami which deploys the uncontrolled surging of the wave its powers of destruction yet also shows the upending of space when it recedes, irresistibly evokes the idea of revolution: revolution in all its solar and lunar cycles, whether in nature or in historical space. From within the encompassing mystery of matter, this labyrinth of shadow and light, this encroaching threat merely evoked rather than demonstrated, Benskys work manages to show the way out. We thus are witness to the sublimation of the core experience of the artist and its metamorphosis.

About Defending Defense

Defending Defense is a coalition effort between the American Enterprise Institute, the Foreign Policy Initiative, and The Heritage Foundation to promote a sound understanding of the U.S. defense budget and the resource requirements necessary to sustain Americas preeminent military position in a dangerous world. Most recently, Defending Defense issued a primer on the prospects for and consequences of a hollow force in light of military spending cuts. Defending Defense has also produced a primer on Chinas military build-up and its implications for U.S. defense spending. This followed the first Defending Defense joint brief, which was designed to separate myth from fact in the current defense spending debate. About the Foreign Policy Initiative FPI is a non-profit, non-partisan, tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. J Street DC Metro in Action

Last week, while an earthquake was shaking up the east coast, the pro-Israel, pro-peace movement did some shaking up of its own: Over 1,000 J Street supporters in 21 cities across the nation visited over 100 Congressional offices to make the call for bold leadership towards Two States Now. Here in DC, we contributed by phone banking to amplify the work of those out in the field. With over 500 calls made, we helped turn out activists around the country to deliver tens of thousands of signed Two-State Summer postcards. Thank you to everyone who kept making calls through the earthquake,

signed the postcards and petitions, held one-on-one conversations, hosted and attended house parties and helped us demonstrate support for a twostate solution!

Liberty and Tolerance in an Age of Religious Conflict Friday,September 9, 9:15 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Georgetown University

Berkley Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs 3307 M Street NW Suite 200 RSVP: http://berkleycenter.georgetown.edu/events/rsvp?id=liberty-and-tolerance-in-an-age-of-religiousconflict

Religious liberty and tolerance are among the most central global issues facing us today. Too often scholars have approached them solely as philosophical questions or abstract universal imperatives, obscuring their meaning and significance within specific religious traditions. Any effort to deepen appreciation for religious liberty and tolerance while excluding religious voices is bound to fail. In conjunction with Calvin College, the Berkley Center is convening scholars and practitioners from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim backgrounds to examine and compare resources supportive of religious freedom and tolerance within their own traditions. The participants are among the contributors to a forthcoming book, Abrahams Children: Liberty and Tolerance in an Age of Religious Conflict. The conference, made possible through the generous support of the John Templeton Foundation, will conclude with an interfaith service in commemoration of September 11, 2001. Each of the panels will address the following questions: 1. Historically, how has your tradition been exploited by opponents of religious liberty and tolerance? Does such exploitation persist, and why? 2. What are the major resources within your tradition supportive of religious liberty and tolerance? What do they add to dominant secular human rights discourse? 3. How can interfaith dialogue and activism advance the liberty and tolerance agenda? What dangers and pitfalls do you see along the way? A Constitutional President: Ronald Reagan and the Founding Friday, September 9, 12:00-1:00 p.m. Lehrman Auditorium Heritage Foundation 214 Massachusetts Avenue NE Washington DC 20002-4999 Register: http://www.heritage.org/Events/2011/09/A-ConstitutionalPresident?utm_source=DC+Linktank&utm_campaign=7aa081b6a3-DC_Linktank_Weekly_Events09_05_011&utm_medium=email From the very beginning to the very end of his Presidency, Ronald Reagan was guided by the first principles of the American Founding, especially the idea of ordered liberty. In the opening paragraphs of his first inaugural address in 1981 much of which he personally drafted President Reagan echoed the preamble of the Constitution, calling on We the people to do whatever needs to be done to preserve this last and greatest bastion of freedom America. Eight years later, in his farewell address to the American people, the President said that the American Revolution was the first revolution in the history of mankind that truly reversed the course of government, and with three little words, We the people.

Under all circumstances, Reagan looked to the Constitution as his North Star. In his State of the Union speeches, Reagan referred to the Constitution more than any other president in the preceding 50 years an average of 16 times per speech. A survey of his presidential papers reveals 1,270 references to the Constitution during his eight years in the White House and another 113 mentions of the Declaration of Independence. In this forum, with two former Reagan cabinet members and two published Reagan historians, we will discuss how the principles of The Founding and the Constitution provided the foundation for Reagans presidency and ultimately influenced his every decision. Project 4 Presents:

Ellington Robinson: In Quest of The Sun (September 9-October 15)

Opening Reception Friday, September 9, 6:30-9:00 p.m. Project 4 Gallery 1353 U Street NW, 3rd floor Washington, DC 20009 (202) 232-4340
Project 4 Gallery is proud to present In Quest of The Sun, a solo exhibition of new work by DC artist Ellington Robinson. To Ellington Robinson, painting is a physical, psychological, and spiritual experience, which includes a formal process and a narrative approach. By contorting and layering collected materials such as travel documents, vinyl, record sleeves, and cassette tapes, Robinsons works evolve and embody his quest.

In his new work Robinson explores the ways by which people reach their physical and socioeconomic location. He asks: How do we arrive at our longitude, latitude, and altitude? What determines our height, width, and depth within time zones. Robinson recognizes that planes, trains and cars, religion, education, and labels are agents in our migration, while also acknowledging a celestial agent where the ancestors dwell in eternity and parallel universes. He employs interoffice envelopes where the names of ancestors, musicians, freedom fighters, and literati are inscribed as a way of stating a common thread; or cassette tapes in which the voices are there but cannot be seen or heard. Further, Robinson draws from the study of his own location and travels. Railroad tracks and floorboards of inner city row-homes are distinctive from the horizon of the ocean in the Virgin Islands, visually representing the contrast between the two places Robinson has called home. Ellington Robinson earned his M.F.A. in painting and mix media at the University of Maryland, College Park and his B.A. in English from Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA. His work is in public and private collections including The David C. Driskell Center and the Jean and Robert Steele Collection. Robinson currently lives and works in Washington DC. Please join us for the opening reception of Ellington Robinson: In Quest of The Sun, with the artist in attendance. Music by DJ I'Wah. After a year of renovation the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery is excited to re-open its doors and present its grand re-opening exhibition, VESSEL. Since 9/11 fear has plagued our cultural psyche, resurrecting the divisive "we" and "other" in our communities. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, our small hope is to use art to open greater avenues for connection and to catalyze a healing discourse. VESSEL combines abstract works to evoke a sacred space of "holding," where open community dialogue may be inspired. Selected works express an effort to move beyond and communicate that 'healing is possible' for everyone. Featuring works by Emily Biondo, Alonzo Davis, Jenny Freestone, Ani Kasten, M.J. Kavian, Madeleine Keesing, Rachel Rotenburg, Angela White, and Millicent Young. "Vessel, Recycle" by Jenny Freestone

Ten years after 9/11, the United States and Pakistan have little to show for the strategic cooperation they proclaimed in the aftermath of the attacks. The best way for the United States to help Pakistan is to stop pretending that it can change the Armys dysfunction and stop enabling the military, writes George Perkovich in a forthcoming piece. Instead, the United States should scale back its presence in Pakistan and redesign its approach to civilian assistance in cooperation with more effective national and multinational actors. Karen DeYoung, associate editor and senior national security correspondent for the Washington Post will moderate a discussion of U.S. policy toward Pakistan in the post-9/11 context. Copies of the new publication, Stop Enabling Pakistans Dangerous Dysfunction, will be available.

IS REALISM RELEVANT? Erik Thor Sandberg: Reparatory Gestures Nathaniel Rogers: When Disaster Strikes Katie Miller : The Fancy of Babes with *gogo emerging art projects: Lauren Adams: Plunder September 10 - October 22, 2011 Is Realism Relevant? Conner Contemporary Art enthusiastically says YES with three concurrent solo exhibitions featuring new works by Erik Thor Sandberg, Nathaniel Rogers and Katie Miller. Six centuries after Flemish oil painting branded the early modern age, each of these DC area artists maximizes his or her command of the realist technique to express the human condition in contemporary life. Engagement with current issues imbues these painters works with the relevance of their own time, while their informed references to artistic precedents casts present situations within a historical perspective. With its world class Old Master museum collections, Washington is a natural home for realism. Representational painting began to make a resurgence here in the 1970s, in the wake of the prominent Washington Color abstractionists. Today, Sandberg, Rogers and Miller are at the leading edge of contemporary realism in DC. ERIK THOR SANDBERG unleashes allegories of our increasingly complex relationship

with nature through narratives of power and passivity that unfold across panoramic vistas in Reparatory Gestures, his fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. Sandberg, who has repeatedly demonstrated mastery of the human figure and landscape as a subjects, emphasizes the viewers body in the experience of the topographies depicted in the four large concave paintings that anchor this new series. The artist designed curved panels to envelope us in captivating expressions of mans manipulations of the environment. Sandberg impressed artificiality on each wilderness landscape with depictions of intrusive human activity, or vestiges of it, such as a port-a-potty, picnic fixings, and guardrails. Whether his characters are engaged in libidinous acts, or immobilized by uncertainty, the contexts in which we find them question the ultimate consequences of their choices. As the picture planes bend, so do the meanings that play out across them. The concave arch of each panel pushes and pulls the ideas represented on it, diverting them from a predetermined linear progression into elusive possibilities for our thoughts to follow. Sandberg reminds us that our personal and collective journeys may lack sure direction or fixed outcomes. Yet, he also suggests, with flawlessly rendered details, including glistening drops of nectar and multi-colored birds eggs, that natures powers of imaging and reparation are ceaselessly at work, leaving us with hope that these forces can restore the balance that man repeatedly compromises. NATHANIEL ROGERS presents vivid analogies of human phenomena surrounding the concept of crisis - how we create it, deal with it, or ignore it - in When Disaster Strikes, his second solo exhibition with the gallery. Rogers superior draftsmans skill is perfectly matched to his sharp wit in this series of intimate panel paintings that reveal coping strategies, or lack thereof, in the automated, indulgent contemporary world. The artist postulates extreme life situations that manifest at intersections and dissonances between behavior and virtual reality. In scenes of real and imagined disasters, including floods, fires and unseen threats, Rogers suggests a breakdown in reality. This theme is expressed most noticeably in the anxiety contained in his narratives, and more subtly in the dissolution of the representational fabric of his pictures. We find a section of the interior depicted in Facing Annihilation unexpectedly sanded down to reveal the bare wood of its support; and a slice of the landscape background in Nailed, appears to peel off, an illusion that underscores the artifice of the picture. As Rogers characterizes contemporary states of mind, he also tests his mediums ability to convey the immediacy of our experiences. The Fancy of Babes is KATIE MILLERs first solo exhibition with the gallery. Relentlessly pushing the realist technique toward hyper-realism, Miller creates artistic characterizations of the consumer-driven hype that fuels the commercial sexualization of children. The artist orders her toddler subjects according to hieratic compositions seen in Renaissance masterpieces by Hans Holbein the Younger and Albrecht Drer, among others, employing geometric principles from that period to instill her figures with the authority of holy, royal or mythological beings. The anachronistic formats interact with Millers exacting rendering of the childrens features and flesh, giving them an otherworldly quality. The youngsters that confront us in these paintings appear disarmingly knowing and self-possessed. This effect is amplified by their attributes, belly button rings and bling-bling-binky pacifiers, inspired by Bratz Babyz dolls, and other widely marketed childrens products. Even the kids pets - a purse dog, a Cremello horse and a hairless cat - appear to have been bred to exaggerated points of curvaceousness. In her three largest panels, Miller poses the toddlers full-length figures in extremely graceful positions that seem to defy anatomy and gravity. Their precarious beauty figures the challenges of balancing childhood with forced adulthood in todays consumer culture. Conner Contemporary Art is also pleased to announce Plunder, a special *gogo projects installation created by Lauren Adams for our courtyard. Adams work was inspired by Elizabethan colonial era textiles, such as pirate flags and clothing depicted in portraits of Queen Elizabeth I and the explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. Adams appropriates decorative patterning from the time of sea based exploration to suggest a critique of capitalisms colonial past. Pairing pirate flags with courtly dress, the artist asserts that pirate culture arose not only from rogue sailors who plundered other ships for

transatlantic trade goods, but also from the colonizers who 'plundered' North American native wealth. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00-5:00 p.m.

KABAKOV (September 10October 29) Opening Reception Saturday, September 10, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Hemphill Fine Arts 1515 14th Street NW Washington, DC 20005 Included in the exhibition are drawings and a scale model of The Large House of Humanity, 1998, an unrealized project designed for the bank of the Potomac River in Washington DC. The proposed monument has a perimeter of 70 x 50 meters and a height commensurate with the Washington Monument. The white metal construction forms the contours of a traditional American home with a mansard roof. From a distance this gigantic house appears like a white mirage against the blue sky. Suspended from the ceiling inside the house are wire letters that read: Since home we have but one, this earth we live upon. With our home in constant motion we are striving toward the stars. Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and by appointment.

An Art Exhibition Based on Exchange Portfolios

Featuring: Joan Belmar, Serena Perrone, Debra Ruzinsky, Justin Strom, Jon Swindler, Laura G. Thorne, Novie Trump and Tom Wolff. At the 39th Street Gallery 3901 Rhode Island Avenue, Brentwood, MD 20722 Entrance on 39th Street, Second Floor

TRADE is exchange; it means "commerse" and "profession." The exhibition TRADE at the 39th Street Gallery intends to be all of those things. It's about working in the arts, placing the gallery and the Gateway CDC at the center of all the things galleries do: supporting artists, building relationships, creating discourse, and yes, funding the continuation of those efforts. Based on the concept of an exchange portfolio and curated by Phil Davis, Trade brings together eight artists who each created a new edition of 12 artworks. Each artist will receive one work from each of the other artists, thus becoming one another's collectors and inevitably also one another's promoters. The remaining four works in each edition are available for sale - all at the same price of $250. It's a rare opportunity to collect work by established artists at such an affordable level. Proceeds go directly to the artists and also benefit the Gateway CDC, which in turn supports arts programming in the 39th Street Gallery as well as working to developing the Gateway Arts District.

______________________________ 39th Street Corridor Exhibition Space Hello:Mosaics by Liza Linder

"I've never really gotten over the fact that my husband and I put our bodies together and made two people. INCREDIBLE." Liza Linder

This installation tells the story of that process for the artist. From the beginning of their relationship she

left branches of forsythia on her now husband's windshield as a way of calling attention to herself and a way of saying "Hello."

This is the artists way of giving thanks to Cilia, Progesterone and Chromosomes.

And though the artists story continues to change and move through time, the act of mosaic-making sets her experiences in stone, well in glass, anyway. In this way, the story becomes concrete. It stops moving and becomes a place of stillness...a place of contemplation.

The Gateway Community Development Corporation is the catalyst for arts-driven economic revitalization of the U.S. Route 1 corridor and the surrounding communities in the Gateway Arts District. Join us as we debut our new art space and first exhibition featuring paintings by Baltimore artist Randi Reiss-McCormack in the solo space and an installation by DC-based artist Matt Hollis in the project space.
harmon art lab (HAL) is a creative collaboration that ties art curator, artist and viewer into an interactive dialogue of ideas and engagement. HAL will exhibit the work of two risktaking artists per month working in a variety of media that will help to redefine contemporary art in the DC area, one as a solo exhibition, the other as a site-specific installation influenced by the space and the content of the artist's own work. This will offer prospects for transformation as each artist creates something temporal and unique to the space. Along with the gallery, harmon art lab will publish a monthly online art paper inviting a menagerie of guest writers to articulate refreshing and thoughtful perspectives about the world of art as they see it. Unlike a traditional gallery website, the online art paper will also include fascinating interviews with area artists, collectors, curators and critics, as well as exhibition and installation images every month.

HAL will be open on Saturday and Sunday during the first week of exhibition, with events such as artist talks, panel discussions and private functions throughout the month, and by appointment after that.

harmon art lab is the creation of artists Peter e Harper and Thomas Drymon.

Randi Reiss-McCormack's work has been shown on both coasts as well as in Europe. A prolific artist, an educator, a wife and mother of three, her work involves themes of domesticity mixed with patterns of pop culture and impressionistic vibrancy resulting in a subtle social commentary that embraces the viewer, incites nostalgia, and stirs thought.

Matt Hollis's work evokes a deep sense of nature, transforming and enlarging it into an artificial realm that gives the viewer a new perspective on how life interacts with itself.

TOM PRICE
(September 10 - October 22) Opening Reception September 10, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Industry Gallery 1358 Florida Avenue NE Suite 200 Washington DC 20002 (202) 399-1730

WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 30, 2011) INDUSTRY will be launching its Fall 2011 design season with the first U.S. solo exhibition of work by innovative British artist and designer, Tom Price. Specializing in modern furniture products, sculpture and lighting design, process plays a key role in Prices work which has been bought by international museums, galleries and private collectors. Much of Prices work is made using unconventional materials. In fact, he often finds it necessary to invent new tools and techniques in order to get the required results from certain fabrications. But Price sees this as an intrinsic part of the overall designand narrative. "I like to think of myself as working in collaboration with materials, processes and phenomena and that the final physical outcome is a product of mutual consent."

About Tom Price

A London native, Price attended several renowned schools including the Royal College of Art. That background in Fine Art informs his approach to design, which is typically very sculptural in both appearance and concept. The vast majority of Tom Prices furniture and collections are anything but conventional. Represented in collections around the world, recently two of Prices pieces were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco.

Meltdown Chair-PP Stripe Photo Courtesy of INDUSTRY

Included in this exhibition will be Prices coveted Meltdown Chairsa series of unique furniture pieces made by melting a seat shape into a sculpted assembly of commonplace plastic products using a specially designed heated former. Original to this exhibit is an homage to DC. When he visited last spring, Price fell in love with the areas iconic cherry trees. Inspired by them, he has constructed a series of sweeping sculptures out of plastic tubing, referencing the shapes of the trees and their blossoms. They will combine to create a unique immersive and site-specific installation, taking over an entire room of the gallery. Prices public commissions include a large-scale sculpture for a new square in the centre of Gloucester (UK) and a sculptural installation for a restored Victorian grotto at the foot of the Royal Terrace Gardens, in Torquay (UK). As an enduring tribute, Prices talent and techniques are referenced in many respected design books including Desire by Elizabeth Honerla; Contemporary Furniture by Martin Wellner and Andrea Mehlhose; New Talents The State of the Arts by Hans Maier-Aichen and Second Lives: Remixing the Ordinary by the Museum of Arts and Design, New York.

About

INDUSTRY
21st Century Design Gallery

INDUSTRY is the premiere gallery in the US devoted to exhibiting the work of 21st Century design. Their focus is on designers who create functional art from industrial materials. Offering single-artist exhibitions, INDUSTRY represents a broad spectrum of international design trends through imaginative and limited edition works that blur the boundary between art and design and redefine the relationship between designer and gallery. INDUSTRY MISSION is to introduce and promote designers and their work to US collectors, curators and critics, to stimulate the conversation about the role design can play in theirs lives, and to inform the viewer about the importance of contemporary design in this time and place. INDUSTRY DIRECTOR Craig Appelbaum has been a collector and private dealer. He opened INDUSTRY in 2010 to exhibit individual artists work within the frame of an installation, allowing each artist to tell his or her own story through site-specific works designed to transform the perception of space. "Many of the artists I show are producing pieces that are highly sought after by museums and collectors in the rapidly expanding area of contemporary design. In the past decade the field has grown considerably as measured by the increasing number of museum exhibitions, international art fairs such as Design Miami and S.O.F.A., and attention by major international auctions houses including Christies, Phillips and Sothebys." INDUSTRY MENTORING PROGRAM In addition to showcasing established artists the gallery also has developed an initiative to introduce the work of emerging designers and design students, offering them the opportunity to exhibit in a professional environment and affording them a realistic gallery experience. And while introducing new talent, at the same time gallery visitors will have a rare opportunity to view the work of tomorrows designers showcasing innovative products from a new generation.

Speakers John Yoo, Professor of Law, University of California, Berkeley School of Law, and former Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Office of Legal Counsel, U.S. Department of Justice Nadine Strossen, Professor of Law, New York Law School, and former President, American Civil Liberties Union

Hosted by Edwin Meese, III Ronald Reagan Distinguished Fellow in Public Policy and Chairman of the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies

The 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks is an appropriate time for reflection, both as to what the nation endured as a result of the attacks as well as whether the response has been appropriate. In addition to providing their reflections on the 9/11 tragedy and its aftermath, distinguished legal scholars John Yoo, Nadine Strossen, and Ed Meese will discuss their own and others contributions to Confronting Terror, a unique collection of essays from principled supporters and critics of the law and policy of the war on terrorism. Edited by Dean Reuter and John Yoo, Confronting Terror sets the stage for a reasoned and robust discussion of the future with a collection of provocative essays examining the meaning of 9/11. Other authors include former Attorneys General John Ashcroft and Michael Mukasey, federal Circuit Judges Laurence Silberman and Raymond Randolph, Richard Epstein, Alan Dershowitz, Johnathan Turley, and Bob Barr. The contributors present stark differences of opinion on issues such as the Presidents authority to detain, the assertion of state secrets, the limits of surveillance, the use of unmanned drones and targeted killing, the treatment and interrogation of detainees, the Patriot Act, and the peculiar nature of our foe. More surprising, perhaps, are the areas of agreement, particularly the fact that the policies of two very different Presidents are remarkably the same. In presenting these contrasting views, the editors and contributors hope to clarify the debate, both for our society and for those responsible for waging the war.

The Goethe-Institut Washington and the Smithsonians Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden present Lunch Bytes, a series of three monthly lunchtime events dedicated to digital art and culture, examining the consequences of the increasing ubiquity of new media in the art world and considering challenging questions raised by this changing artistic landscape. While enjoying a light lunch, the visitor experiences and participates in discussions between renowned German and American artists and intellectuals. -----------------------------------------------Lunch Bytes: Copy Culture Wednesday, September 14, 12:00-2:00 p.m. Goethe-Institut 812 Seventh Street NW RSVP: rsvp@washington.goethe.org Kicking off the series is an event centered on questions about copyright and authorship. Potential Impact of Proposed Privacy Legislation Luncheon September 16, 12:00-2:00 p.m. U.S. Chamber of Commerce 1615 H Street NW Washington DC 20062-2000 RSVP: cedgar@uschamber.com Presented by Jim Stone, EVP of Growth Strategies at Maritz This briefing will highlight the potential impact of proposed privacy legislation on a broad range of marketing and related services, including traditional market research, consumer surveys, customer loyalty programs, employee incentive programs, and social media data collection and analysis (the measurement of a businesss perception, reputation, opportunities and risk in the online marketplace). While there has been significant discussion among policy makers about the impact of proposed privacy legislation on advertising, and online behavioral advertising in particular, the potential impact on the U.S. economy is much broader when all facets of marketing services are considered, especially given the widespread use and reliance on these services to drive sales revenue, market growth, customer acquisition, employee productivity and other elements that are fundamental to performance of U.S. businesses and our national economy.

The Solo Show of Tim Conlon

(September 17-October 16) Opening Reception Saturday, September 17, 8:00-11:00 p.m. Art Whino Gallery 120 American Way National Harbor, MD 20745

The event is FREE and open to the public. Derailed 2, a solo exhibition featuring aerosol artist Tim Conlon. Derailed 2 pays homage to the artists almost twenty-year love affair with freight train graffiti art. In this new exhibition, Conlon will showcase a series of new works including life-size aerosol

paintings of aged freight cars; weathered model trains featuring scaled-to-size graffiti in the bright colors and iconic characters for which Conlon is best known; and contemporary photographs of trains and their environs. About Derailed 2 Conlon says, I discovered freight train graffiti as a college kid in Baltimore just as the scene was emerging. As one of the biggest port cities on the East Coast, commercial cargo regularly arrived on large ships in Baltimore Harbor and was transferred to freight trains headed toward big cities like Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Train cars were everywhere and as an art student with in interest in graffiti, it was easy to get hooked on this revolving art gallery.

Conlon is best known for his large-scale murals and canvases. He was one of two aerosol artists featured in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallerys 2008 exhibition, RECOGNIZE! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture and recently was featured and had a small curatorial role in the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Arts Art in the Streets exhibit. Works by Conlon have also been exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Art Basel in Miami, Strychnin Gallery in Berlin, and numerous other galleries. He has been featured in dozens of publications, websites, and other media outlets including Smithsonian Magazine, Washingtonian Magazine, The Washington Post, Washington City Paper, NPR, DC Modern Luxury, American Observer, Paste Magazine, the DCist blog, and The Examiner. Conlon posts regular missives about art and culture both local and global on his website and blog, www.conoperative.com.

If the cameras perform as intended, what are their costs to police budgets and citizen rights? The results of that three-year study -Evaluating the Use of Public Surveillance Cameras for Crime Control and Prevention -- will be detailed, discussed, and debated at this special Urban Institute forum. Since formally opening up relations in 1992, ties between South Korea and China have grown at an exponential pace. In the span of only three decades China has become South Korea's top trade partner, while the United States has fallen to fourth. At the same time, North Korea's dependence on China as its sole patron has only grown. Join KEI for a special breakfast program to mark the launch of Korea's Economy 2011 and two of this year's distinguished authors for a discussion on the changes and implications of the growing interdependence between China and the two Koreas.

Tuesday, September 20, 9:00-10:30 a.m. Korea Economic Institute 1800 K Street NW Suite 1010 Washington DC, 20006
A light breakfast will be served.

You are cordially invited to a book lecture for Soulmates: Resurrecting Eve with author Dr. Juliana Geran Pilon IWP Professor Director, Center for Culture and Security at IWP Friday, September 23, 6:00-7:30 p.m. The Institute of World Politics 1521 16th Street NW Washington, DC 20036 Please RSVP to kbridges@iwp.edu

In Soulmates: Resurrecting Eve, Juliana Geran Pilon argues for a return to an egalitarian view of men and women, found in the original Genesis narrative, as reflected through Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In each of these Abrahamic traditions, it was understood that man and woman were created to be soulmates in God's image -equal despite their different functions within society. Pilon writes that this original message has gradually been distorted, with disastrous effect. Any hope for an ennobling human community begins by resurrecting Eve as an equal partner to Adam.

The work examines the Biblical creation narrative, comparing it to Greek and other ancient mythologies. Pilon explains how the disturbing association of woman with sin and death led to Eve's demise as Adam's equal. The final section of the work deals with the Goddess myth, love and marriage in early religious narratives, and modern man's search for his soul no less than for a soulmate.

The book, at its core, is a meditation on the relationship between men and women but also among human beings. The resurrection of Eve is indispensable to attaining a true appreciation of love and faith. Pilon uses religious texts, expert

commentary, and various works of fiction, poetry, and psychology to make her argument come alive. The work is strengthened by the writing style, alternately poetic and humorous, and a clear and illuminating progression of ideas. Its emphasis on reconciliation and understanding, and its post-feminist outlook will find a receptive audience.
