Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, is an island off the Indian

subcontinent and was a long-time colony of the United Kingdom.

During the colonial days, the British shipped many Tamil people
to the small island nation to work as labourers, a cruel practice
carried out without thought for the basic human rights or even the
welfare of the poor labourers. This act of transporting mass numbers
of people from one place to another was very widespread during the
colonial era, even up to just before the outbreak of World War Two.

The legacy of transplanted people, from the Caribbean, Africa, Fiji,

Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Kashmir and right up to Hong Kong has brought
much distress, pain and outright conflict to the inhabitants of the
former colonies of the British Empire.

The colonies all eventually became independent after the war, but
independence from colonialism also meant that local customs, beliefs
and practices rose to the fore, to replace the colonial master's
imposed set. Local sensibilities usually do not go hand in hand with
what the former masters brought.

The British ( and the other European powers ) owe these former colonies
an explanation, plus compensation, for the mess that they have left
behind, besides the untold riches that they stole and took back to
Europe.

Italy has recently agreed to a comprehensive compensation package for

its former colony, Libya, in recognition of the past pain and suffering
she inflicted on another people.

But, for Sri Lanka, there is no such compensation. Instead, what the
former British masters have provided is a civil war that has claimed
more than 80,000 lives and unaccountable economic losses.

The Sri Lankan government has fought tooth and nail against the small
but extremely ruthless Tamil LTTE who are famous for their gun and
bomb attacks on countless civilian targets.

Each day, innocent people are killed, either at the bus station, the
local market, inside buildings or even by the roadside. Norway has
tried to broker peace, but all the other European powers, who, by the
way are so very keen on socialist and ex-socialist locations such as
Afghanistan, the former Yugoslavia, the Caucasus and even Tibet have
behaved like irresponsible criminals and have done absolutely nothing
to protect the lives of the innocent.

For the people of Sri Lanka, the mindless bloodletting will surely not
be ending any time soon, no thanks to the horrible legacy left behind
by the United Kingdom.

As for London, which incidentally pioneered narcotics trafficking in

the nineteenth century, Sri Lanka just does not appear on its horizon.

The very sad state of affairs is not just confined to Sri Lanka, we
have Kenya, Timor Leste, Indonesia and many other former colonies of
the countries now better known as the G7, witnessing riots, arson and
mass killings at one time or another. The innocent have truly suffered.
