From our Eyes

Very often many of you have to come to ask for our advice and suggestions regarding the preparation for placements, what to study, from where to study etc. etc. We advised from the little experience that we had and often wondered that what about those who never interacted with us. How could we reach out to each and everyone of you, to tell you that please do not repeat the mistakes that we have committed. How could we make your turbulent voyage smoother and serene. We raked our brains and came out with the concept of compiling and presenting to you all good and the evil of placements to make your journey more comfortable. Face to face is an original work which encompasses the experiences and thoughts of those who have made through various companies, guidelines for placement preparation, group discussions, interviews, the group discussion topics given by companies, extempore topics, case studies, the books recommended by all of us and a question bank of more than 400 questions asked by different companies. In My Experiences section, selected students have poured out their heart and penned down what they felt during those tough times. Someones journey was easy without any hurdles, while someone was lost in despair and felt abysmally low. This eclectic mix of experiences is going to provide you an insight to what actually happens before the interview, inside the room and how one feels. Its not to scare you but to prepare you for what may be in store for you. We have deliberately not given answers to the questions that we have compiled. Its for you to find out the answers. We feel that in finding out answers to these questions you will learn many more valuable things. Please be sure that before you sit for your campus interviews you are through with these questions. These may not be the exact questions that you may face but you will certainly get tremendous help as the pattern of questions is more or less similar. We have given to you tips for placement preparation, GDs and interviews. These suggestions are all from our own experience. Follow them religiously. Try to go through all the GD topics and case studies and discuss it among yourselves. Face to face is very special because what it contains is not in any book, journal or internet. It is from those who faced it, fought it and won it, here at XISS. Its a gift from all of us to you, dear juniors. Go through it thoroughly. We can never know whats in store for us

My Experiences
Rashmi Sinha- TCS The aptitude test was simple with MAT- type questions and general awareness questions relating to IT. In the first round the panel members tried to put me under stress. More academic questions were asked. It was a fairly simple round. The second round of interview was pretty tough as it had practical situational questions. The interviewers were testing my spontaneity and my ability to relate what I had learnt with practical situations. A lot of emphasis on communication was laid in this round. I suggest that you should have a complete command and mastery in one of the subjects like OB, HR or Laws. Noopur Priya ARVIND MILLS In the interview of Arvind Mills lot of personal questions were asked apart from a few questions from academics. An IR situation was thrown and was asked how I would handle that. Be thorough with topics of OB like Motivation. Leadership, Learning and Personality. Having a clear concept of laws is a must. In the interview be confident and never waiver your answers even if the recruiter tries to do so although you know you are right. Be polite, yet assertive. Show a lot of energy but not too much eagerness. At the same time have your feet grounded firmly. Dhrubo Bharadwaj IPCL The panel comprised of four persons, two DGM (HR) of Vadodara and Nagotane Plant, one VP(Systems) and a Consultant. The aptitude test was a simple mathematical, logical reasoning test. It was a high scoring test and most of the candidates scored heavily due to which the cut-off went high, so accuracy was very important. The psychometric test was administered by a Consulatant hired by IPCL. The GD was conducted in a group of six or seven candidates. It was not a structured GD. The interview was a long one. They had the syllabus booklet with them and kept asking questions from any topic they fancied upto third semester. A load of personal questions were also asked. Questions from my CV regarding hobbies, interest, academic background were asked. It was a holistic interview. A cumulative score was considered for selection. According to me, the Acts in their order of importance are ID Act, Factories Act, CLRA Act, Payment of Wages Act and Workmens Compensation Act and ESI Act.

Mayank HERO HONDA The psychometric test at Hero Honda was a non-elimination round. There were three people in the panel including VP(HR). The panel was cordial enough. In all the interviewers which I faced most of the questions were from Labour Laws and few other questions from other subjects. Questions were basically from ID Act, CLRA Act, Workmens Compensation Act, Payment of Bonus Act, Payment of Gratuity Act and Factories Act. Also questions were asked from Collective Bargaining. My suggestion is that put maximum thrust on Labour Laws and OB. Companies expect that we must be proficient especially in Labour Laws as XISS has been known for Labour Laws. Also conduct mock GDs regularly to be well versed in these activities. Priyanka Choudhary CROMPTON GREAVES My interview at TCS was totally an academic one checking my command on OB, HRM and Laws, while MaFoi was a mix of formal and informal questions. Besides, my project they made me do SWOT analysis of Bihar, Jharkhand and myself. HCL was a stress interview where lots of activities like Role Plays, extempore were done to check the attentivity and spontaneity. Arvind Mills again revolved around project while Crompton Greaves was quite informal one where same question was put up in 4-5 different ways. I feel no pretensions work in an interview, so be yourself and no false statements should be given. Go thorough the basics of HRM and PPM. Companies like TCS look for those who are very strong in them. Questions on marriage and boyfriends are to read your stability in the organization. Usually companies go for corporate GD so dont make GD a fish market or keep talking. In a GD of 20 minutes with 10 members, 2 minutes is more than enough. The important thing in GD is to speak right thing at right time in a right manner. Anubha Kumari STERLITE INDUSTRIES In the interview at Sterlite, there were three persons in the panel. It was a stress interview as in the beginning all of them were shooting questions rapidly at the same time. In such a situation one should politely answer one question at a time, asking others to wait. Towards the end of the interview there was less tension, they asked my interest and other questions to gauge my interest in their organization. I advise that one should be calm and cool headed and think and take time before one answer. Show conviction and confidence in your answers with right facial expressions and body language. Do some self-awareness exercise to know yourself better. Show emotional stability, energy and enthusiasm. Dont show your desperation for the job. Be careful that your answers do not reflect your weakness. All in all lay a lot of stress on your knowledge, read your subjects well and be very well prepared. Once you are able to answer the questions, confidence will automatically build up.

Anita Soloman VSNL My best interview was in VSNL, ACC, LPS and Eveready. In VSNL, everything went smoothly in the beginning but gradually they tried to put me under stress. Basically they were trying to check my attitude. ACC was more of a friendly conversation. In LPS, stress was on academics, while at Eveready, the stress was more on my attitude and out-of-the-box thinking ability. My suggestion is that be thorough with your summer project and your subjects. Be aware with the latest trends in HR. A rank in top 15 will give you an edge. Be very clear as to where would you like to see yourself few years down the line. Gagandeep Kaur HERO HONDA As I am from statistics background a number of times I was asked to link statistics with HR. One common question was why double masters degree. I advise to prepare yourself with a crisp and complete overview of all the Acts. By stressing upon the key words you can turn the interview in the direction you want, as I did in the interview of Hero Honda. In personal questions, try to inculcate the values that the particular company has. Hobbies should be such that show you are full of vigour. When you are called for the interview out of Ranchi, note that only few of you will be called and when at the venue, your each and every activity is observed not only inside the interview room but outside the room also. Maintain proper mannerisms. Priyanka Hore VSNL In my interview at VSNL, the interviewers made me very comfortable but at the same time were putting me under a slight pressure. I had to defend my answers. They wanted to see whether a candidate sticks to what he or she is saying or has a wavering opinion. Whether looking for an HR job or an IR job, I suggest lay emphasis on law. Have conviction, clarity of thought and be confident. Show emotional maturity and a definite desire to work for the organization. Neha Kumaria EVEREADY INDUSTRIES My interview at Eveready was not a stereotype one because most of the questions were related to personal life experience rather than academics. The panel wanted to judge whether the candidate had leadership and teambuilding qualities. They were very calm initially but later on started firing questions to put stress. They said that I had no quality and there was nothing in my CV and threw it on the

next seat. Be calm and confident in such situation. Show attitude and a drive to excel. Dont show desperation for the job but at the same time show that you need a platform to start and youll put your best. Be ambitious, ready to innovate and take up challenges. Ranadeep Sen JINDAL STAINLESS The preliminary interview at Jindal at Ranchi was easy going as it was just a revalidation of the GD decisions. The final interview at Delhi consisted of 2 rounds. The first was based on academics and summer project and few personal questions. The second interview headed by the VP-HR was a stress group interview. Questions were open for discussions and recommendations. You should know yourself in and out completely. You should be able to justify your strengths and weakness through examples. For IR profile job, focus on labour laws and IR. Also study wage and salary administration, collective bargaining etc. If HR profile then focus on OB, HRD and HRM. In HRD know PMS, T&D well. Try to relate topics in OB with that of HRD and OD. Study both IR and HR, but make one as your thrust area. Decide where you want to go now and five years down the lane and answer the questions accordingly. Also browse through your graduation subjects. Try to express everything in practical terms than in bookish terms. Evaluate each of your interview critically and read those topics which you couldnt answer. Deepshikha Shekhawat STERLITE INDUSTRIES My interview at Sterlite started with personal questions and then moved to Academic questions. For the initial few moments I was nervous. The interviewers helped me to be at ease. Then they started putting me under stress. Be yourself. The interviewers are smart HR people. So dont try to fool them. Have your concepts clear about the subjects, with total confidence in one subject. Labour laws is XISSs USP, so dont miss it even if you are intended to go to HR. know yourself. Interviewers will ask you some questions about yourself that you may find not answerable. Do your SWOT analysis and know each and every word mentioned in the CV. Have the courage to say No if you dont know any answer. Your attitude and body language are the best way of expressing your positive approach. Dont forget to work on it. Sumit Mukherjee SHAW WALLACE Mostly interviews start by asking about ones background, family members, education etc. Then they proceed towards academic and other questions. The Law based questions are pretty tough therefore I feel that an in-depth knowledge of laws especially ID Act and Factories Act is essential. My biggest mistake was in the IPCL interview where I gave answers without any confidence. The

10

interviewers interrupted me while answering and asked me to rethink over my answers. I advise you to be confident else youll become very stressed. Rupika Ram MaFoi My first interview of TCS was more of a technical interview mainly law based. I was given an opportunity to ask a question to the panel. In the group discussion of MaFoi each one of us was first asked about our strengths and weakness. In the interview lot of questions on my summer project were asked. My advice to you is that try to answer questions by giving examples of the company where you do your summer project. This shows your level of involvement during summer project. One should be careful about his attitude during interview. Show that you are flexible and can very well adjust in new culture. Sujoy Kumar Choudhary LPS My interview at LPS was quite easy going. Only in some cases they tried to put me under stress. But overall I felt quite comfortable. I advise you to read Human Capital and Indian Management journal regularly. Be clear about all the provisions and amendments and recent developments in Law, HRM and HRD. A little knowledge about graduation subjects also comes handy. Try to prepare answers to questions which are generally asked in the interview. Try to avoid nervousness and always believe that there is a suitable company for everyone and if you work hard then you will definitely get through. Prakriti Priya TCS The panel was supportive. It consisted of three members. Stress was laid on the theoretical aspects of the papers we had studied so far, especially Organisational Behavior, HRM and HRD. The final round was basically a test of ones ability to cope with real life situations and with stress. Remember, its the rule of FIVE..the first 5 steps you take towards the panel, the first 5 sentences you speak, the first 5 inches of your body and the first 5 minutes you spend there, matters the most. Rehearse the company well. Be sure why you want to be there. Do not be in a haste to reply. Do not get bogged down with negative response/gestures from the panel.this might simply be a test of your ability to cope with stress. Be prepared to answer the question do you have any questions from us. Be polite and consistent, be assertive but not arrogant. Chaman Preet MAFOI

11

There were two people in the interview panel. One was the Head- HR from Chennai, which is the headquarters and the other was the Center head Kolkata. My Interview experience was quiet strange. I gave the written exam where they had asked us to write down something on Problems of the BPO industry. I qualified for the GD but did not sit in for it. They found one student missing so they called me to talk to me and asked me to come for the interview directly. In the interview I went in with a mind frame that I do not have anything to loose today because as it is I was not sitting in for the company. I guess this attitude worked. During the interview they asked me questions to which I gave very blunt but true answers. For instance, they asked me to tell them whatever I knew about MaFoi, but I had not seen their site, as I was not sitting in for the company so I told them that I had not seen the site. They asked me all personal questions and questions from my CV in the interview. Be very thorough with your CV so that you can defend each and every point mentioned in it. When sitting in for a company, never go with a pressure in your mind. Never think things like this is my dream company and I have to crack it. Be relaxed. Always go with a light mind and think that you have nothing to loose even if you dont get through. Theres always a probability that you wont get through the company you want to the most and will be able to crack the one you dont really want. Even if you dont get through, dont loose heart coz its all about the right kind of profile. The interviewer comes with a frame of mind and no matter how good you are at academics, in the interview; he will pick you only if you match the profile he is looking for. Never try to bluff the interviewer; He is not a fool; Be true. Amit Maheshwari TCS In the first round questions were asked primarily from Academics, majority from Labour laws (FA,ESI and Contract Labour), IR(Trade Union) and OB(Motivation).Relevance of Maslows theory in organizational context. I was asked about my values. There were some leading questions on it. In the management Interview, questions were mostly situational based. Like I was given a case situation in which I had to counsel an employee (he has a break up with Girlfriend). I wasnt asked any thing about my summer project but was asked about the importance of HR in manufacturing sector (What is important for Steel factory: steel making or people employed?), Role of HR in developing efficiency in manufacturing sector. I was also asked my biggest achievement and biggest failure in life. Have good marks in the institute, it always helps. You get more number of opportunities. Know in advance the value system and work culture of the company and build your answers around that. Never be high flier, always be modest. Respect the ego of the recruiter. Be well versed in academics(LL, OB, HRD and IR). Read journals like Human Capital and dailies like ET. Have good voice modulation and be confident about your answers. But dont be adamant about your viewpoint when the recruiter is contrary to it. Always ask question when the recruiter asks you to ask. Be attentive at the PPT. Padmaja Bhagat TCS

12

Fortunately I didnt have to face any rejection and TCS was my only interview. So my interview experience is very limited. There were 3 people taking the interviews: 2 in the technical round and 1 in the situational round. I didnt find the interview very taxing, though we were later informed that theyd tried to put all of us under some stress and the ones who were able to handle it well were successful. The questions were a bit on the rapid side. They were basically checking whether you knew the answer or not before asking the next one. Rest was all ok. The situational interview was conducted to see our psychological set up. Their basic aim was to check whether we will be able to suit their organisation or not, what our value system is etc. The questions put to you are basically related to what youve filled in the application blank. So dont just write things because they seem good; you have to have a sound reason for your answers. I feel that excellent english doesnt necessarily lead to excellent communication. Be clear about what it is you want to put forward and ensure that your meaning is clear. Try to be precise and concise, as they dont have too much time. Focus on your core subjects. Its important that you have one subject that you are thorough with. E.g.: OB, HR, Labour Laws etc. Have proper justifications for the choices youve made in your life. You cannot appear to be vague about it. Mind your manners and your body language. Dont fidget. Never try to bluff. Dont do any last minute study. Keep track of major changes occurring in the business world esp. about your own field. Keep your cool. Lastly remember: Think for the best but be prepared for the worst. So dont get disheartened if you cant qualify in the first few interviews. It doesnt mean that there is something lacking in you, it simply means that the company suiting your profile has yet to come Tulika Ritu TCS The first Interview Was Based on Academics and its purpose was to test the knowledge base. The second Interview was a stress interview, which was situation based, purpose was to look for a person who matched their work culture. Be through with the basics in labour laws, HRD , and OB. Know yourself well i.e. your strengths weakness. Be clear about what you want in life, your goals, ambitions. When you say for e.g. collecting stamps is my hobby you should know about stamps more than the interviewer i.e. collect as much possible information on your areas of interests. Bhaskar Rishi Shankar IPCL The interview started on a very easy note as the interviewers asked personal questions in the beginning but later on they switched over to academics. As there were four persons, each of them asked questions on random basis. They were not giving time to think before answering and it was like rapid fire. In between they tried to cool me up by asking some question about the institute. Finally they asked me to sing a song as singing is my hobby. I think that nobody can know everything but being strong in academics is very

13

essential. You should know at least what others in your class know. Just being strong in academics is not a guarantee for selection. This is just an eligibility criterion. At times your behaviour, attitude, confidence level and how you answer your personal questions are the decisive factor. Being a good actor helps a bit during interview but not always. You should be very careful about what you are projecting about yourself and what you actually are. And most important thing be confident and keep the conversation going. Nirmesh Kumar Parmar INDAL In the interview of INDAL I had a feeling that the interviewers were interested in me. It started with personal questions and then they started putting me under stress by asking questions on all topics specially OD and HRD. They asked me how to change the culture of the organization and asked me to prepare a questionnaire on this. After this, they asked questions on Law, in which I was very confident, so the interview became smooth gradually. In the interview of ACC, the interviewers asked me a case, in which after answering a few questions, my mind stopped working and I went blank. In the interview of Hero Honda, I entered the room in expectation of some academic questions but they asked me some personal questions and started giving me feedback on my psychometric test. I thought they were putting me under stress and I became defensive but then they put me at ease. Prepare ID Act, Factories Act, Standing Orders, CLRA Act as a bunch of laws. Other bunch may include EPF Act, Payment of Gratuity Act, Payment of Bonus Act, ESI Act, WC Act. Give hint about your summer topic when asked to describe yourself, to turn interview in your favour. If you start the GD, then be involved in it till the end to make your presence felt. Read a lot of business magazines to help you in GD. Give presentations in class to improve your confidence and communication. Sneh Mukherjee TCS The first round of interview was academic based. The questions were asked in a sequential manner and I was given time to answer each question. In the second round, the interviewers put me under stress by asking situational questions. They were testing my consistency of thoughts. Have a pleasant smile even at times of stress. Be very truthful in the interview. Pooja Chhabra ARVIND MILLS The interview of Arvind Mills was a mix of academic and personal questions with more emphasis on the latter. I advise you to be calm and be yourself. Dont try to portray your weakness as your strength, the interviewer is smart enough to recognize it. Be well versed with OB, Labour Laws, HRM and HRD. Summer project is the most crucial area. Design your CV properly. Dont mention

14

details which you are not sure of, e.g. your hobbies which should be actual ones. Highlight your achievements. Eye contact is very necessary, it shows your confidence. Shashikant Kumar ACC In the written test there were more of General knowledge questions. In the interview there were technical questions. I felt comfortable in the interview. The panelists put me at ease. More of labour law questions were asked. I replied the labour law questions with the Section numbers which impressed the interviewers a lot and this gave me a tremendous edge over other candidates. I advise you to practice a lot for the GD and the interview. Not only for these but study for written test also. Learn the fine details of laws and OB which will help you crack the written test. Also brush up your quantitative and reasoning problem solving skills to score high in the aptitude test. Also prepare according to the criteria of the company if you know it in advance. Joshua Jacob LPS My most satisfying and exhaustive interview was at Crompton Greaves. If Samar Shrivastav had a say I would have been at CG.Sometimes there are better things to look forward to. It was an unforgettable experience. Too near yet too far. At LPS my interview lasted for about 25 minutes. It covered almost the entire spectrum of labour laws. It was a non-stress interview. Nilendra Bahadur Chand ACC I faced just two interviews that is Arvind Mills and ACC and was fortunate to get into the latter. I feel you should always be yourself, never try to be an imposter, be assertive not submissive or arrogant. If you dont know any answer or you are not sure about it say I dont know or I am not very sure about it. Look directly into the eyes of the interviewer while answering but do not stare. Be polite and steady. I advice you to learn all the important definitions and clearly understand the meaning of the words in them. Read labour law journals and Personnel Today as much as possible. Keep revising the laws and read ID Act very extensively. Ullas Kumar JINDAL STAINLESS The interview of Jindal, which I faced At XISS, was a casual one. There was not a single question asked from syllabus and the only thing they looked for was attitude. There was only one person taking the interview. The interview which I faced in delhi was a good

15

one. There were a lot from questions asked from OB, OD, HR and RM. The only thing, which I was not asked, was labour laws. There were two persons taking the interview including a lady. They were very supportive. They didnt ask me any direct questions, the main purpose was to judge the amount of nervousness, they were laughing, complementing and were very down to earth. But the story was somewhat different in ACC and Shaw Wallace. In these companies the panel constituted of two persons and they were throwing fireballs from labour laws. Again the questions were indirect And totally based on cases. According to me the most important subjects no doubt labour laws. ID Act should be on the tips of your fingers. Always study in groups for labour laws. Discuss as many cases as possible. Sections are not so important except a few. The concept should be clear. Leadership and motivation are very important in OB. Go through each and every theory in detail. HRM is important for girls. Be expert in your summer project, be cool during the interviews and maintain a smiling face with a sense of casual behavior, just feel that this is not the last company to visit the campus. Santosh Kumar Pandey ACC TCS was a very bad experience, my first round of interview was great but the worst part is that I thought it was great but actually it wasnt. I got the feedback that You are too assertive. I was very upset. Moral : Dont go with very high expectation. In Ma Foi I was not able to make into interview though GD was quite cool but still I couldnt make it to the interview. Again I was very upset, but my core area was IR/Laws so MaFoi was not my cup of tea. Moral: Know your strength area and you just need one job, not every company can be yours. For Arvind Mills, I thought that this was actually my company as it was the first manufacturing company and I have done BE (Mech) so I again made the same mistake, entered the interview room with high expectation. The feedback I got You were not as authoritative in your interview as you were in the GD (opposite of TCS) Moral: be yourself, be natural. Earlier to Crompton Greaves, clearing GD and written was not big problem for me, may be this was reason why I didnt revise my labour laws/hr/ob for written exams. So I faced one of the worst moments, I was not able to clear written test. Moral: Dont be over confident at any point of time. The interview of Sterlite was the best shot even better than my ACC interview. I could hardly find anything wrong but still the feedback I got was : Dear, you are 99.9% through with the interview but still we dont know why you are not with us. Its very hard to say No to you. This was the day when I lost hope, I prepared myself for off campus and who said Boys dont cry.

16

Moral: Expect the unexpected The interview of IPCL was the lengthiest process. I was again shortlisted for the interview, which went for around 20 minutes. This was the only interview when even after such a good interview I was thinking that I will not be able to make it. Moral: Be cool, even if you have lost 6 companies, because 7th may be yours! ACC: It was my day. GD was great, interview was great. All labour laws and IR questions and Summer project. At the end of the interview, they asked me to sing a song as it was my hobby mentioned in my CV. Moral: Dont bluff anything in your CV. Rajiv Mishra ARVIND MILLS The keyword is to be polite and firm. Be very confident about yourself, from your dress/appearance to your knowledge. Your opinion should be backed with logic. You should be very tactful in convincing the interviewers. You should have leadership as well as team building attitude. Have a complete overview of the company you are applying for. Jayshree INDAL Every interview is a way to show your worth as a person. I believe that personal questions are very important. Interviewers are there to know you, listen to you so be very poised, enthusiastic about yourself. During the entire 15-20 to 45 minutes you must be there keeping in mind that they are there to select you not reject you, feel that they will listen and understand you. My advice to you is that always ask questions if they allow you. The introduction is the best time to impress the panel. Show both professional and personal part especially talk about your passion, values, how your upbringing has made you a hardworker, disciplined person, your parents influence on you. Try to gel your features with the requirements as inferred by you from the PPT. talk about your accomplishments without showing pride. Take 2-3 deep breaths before getting into the room. Theres only 1 seat, so never care for other candidates. Dont copy others. The interviewers try to confuse you and deter you from track so have a convincing power, show your own views. Remember that every interview adds to your knowledge and confidence. My suggestion to you is that you either allow panelists to take lead and obey or show your hidden talents one by one. GD is a key area where they see your span of thought, varied ideas and presentability. Just wait and have faith for the right day. Siddhartha Kumar TCS

17

It was a nice experience for me. I was very confident and while replying I was humble as well as assertive. First round was technical round and mostly they asked questions from OB, HRM and HRD. By Gods grace it was my day , whatever question they asked me I replied. There was not a single question which I was not able to reply. In a way I can say that luck lays an important role, because they asked only those questions that I fortunately knew. In the second round of interview no book helped me. I had to apply my wisdom. Next day after my selection, the interviewers told me that second round was a stress interview but I never felt. The key to success is confidence. Never fool the interviewer and never hurt his ego. In replying there should be proper mix of assertiveness and humility. Voice modulation is also very important.

Sonal Bhardwaj STERLITE INDUSTRIES My first interview experience was at TCS. Since it was the next day after exams, I had not prepared well. My first round of interview went for about 45 minutes and everyone said that I will make it to the nest round, but in my heart I knew that with the poor quality of answers I gave I would not and yes, I was right. In my MaFoi interview I was the last candidate to be interviewed and the panelists just did some time-pass. Perhaps they had already decided the candidates. Also they asked me too many questions on values and morals and I feel I am not that ethical in life and it virtually came out in my questions. I was rejected and got my first setback. But thanks to my friends that I recovered by the time I was through with my dinner. In the interview of Arvind Mills, I did well and was hopeful of making through, but luck did not favour me again and I was left out again. Now I started getting low. The next interview was Crompton Greaves and only two girls were selected for the interview and I was one of them. I had a fair chance of getting selected. My spirits were already very low. My interview stretched for nearly an hour where I was bombarded with very tough IR questions. But again I could not make through. The interviewer told me that I was brilliant and fantastic but he had to choose one. After this I hit the lowest point of my life. I did not feel like studying anything. Its difficult to express how depressed I was feeling. But somehow I gathered myself with help of my friends and for two days I slogged like hell. I had no count of time. On the third day I faced Sterlite. My interview was very good. Laws, HR, OB and Summer project. They did not leave anything. I was very confident throughout. After giving the interview I thought that if I do not make through this company I will have nothing to study as I had studied everything in and out. But it was my day and I got through. My only advice is have loads of faith in yourself and tons of it in God. Sooner or later youll make it. Sometimes you have to fight a battle again to win it. Read Face to Face religiously. Amit Prakash ARVIND MILLS

My first interview was with TCS. I could not even clear the technical interview. The main reason for it was that I was speaking too softly. I was not even clearly audible. I was confused about the answers about some questions due to the never ending discussions that we used to have before the interviews. I suggest dont discuss too much. Stay cool and focused. Take a stroll. Fill up the application blank neatly. My next interview was with Arvind Mills and I succeeded. Everything goes right when its your day. My GD had been very good that day. The topic for GD was Munnabhai MBA. It called for a discussion on creativity I started the discussion on creativity and the GD revolved around it. The interview was an easy one. The panel consisted of 2 persons. They started the interview on my family background and educational background. They asked me questions from summer project, situational questions and from labour laws. They mostly checked my confidence in the interview. I suggest you to finish academic preparations by November before the placements start. Before facing interview gather knowledge about the company and make yourself organization fit. Knowledge will make you confident. Make utmost use of the library. Know the latest amendments and cases in Labour Laws. Read Face to Face religiously and prepare accordingly. Prepare answers to all the questions given in Face to Face.

Placement Preparations
Time and tide wait for none. Soon after your summers you have about 5-6 months for preparing thoroughly for the placements, so dont waste them. Seeing our placements and the booming job market, we expect companies to start lining up by November. By this time you should have been thorough with all your laws, OB and HR concepts. While preparing you have to be very discreet about what to study and how to study. We have tried to give you some very practical ways for preparing laws, OB, IR , HRM, HRD and other subjects as well. Before starting the preparation you have to decide that in each which area you have to be absolutely proficient. This will be your core competency. Now while preparing you should lay maximum stress on these subjects and know it in and out. The most important subjects as agreed by everyone are Labour laws and OB. There are many companies who come to XISS to get candidates proficient in laws. So if you give a poor performance, you will cut a very sorry figure in front of them. Secondly, OB is a subject in which you need to have a clear understanding of all theories, concepts and their organizational implications. Together with your technical preparation, it is very necessary for you to develop your communication skills which are the backbone of the selection criterion. If you are fluent in English you have an advantage over others, and if you are not, you have lot of time to work upon it to improve it. However, proficiency in English is no guarantee to selection. What matters most is how crisply you can present your answers and convince the interviewers. You must practice to give crisp answers i.e. being very specific. Follow the principle of KISS (Keep it short and simple). Circumlocution will only irritate and bore the interviewer and for you it will be suicidal. Another important area you have to prepare is your mathematical skills, verbal and non-verbal reasoning and general knowledge. This will help you crack the first hurdle i.e. the written test. Remember if you dont clear written your chance to go further is finished completely. Though it may seem silly but make an interview copy or register and write down the answers to obvious and important questions mostly personal in nature. They should be memorized by you. Groom yourself in all these months. Inculcate pleasing mannerisms in your behaviour. Visit beauty parlous sometimes and stay neat and prim. Beauty may not win the battle for you, but it can put you ahead in it. Therefore do smart work. Prepare very devotedly and go through Face to Face religiously, for being absolutely prepared for the D Day.

Group Discussions
Normally, all companies conduct a group discussion. This is not a selection tool but an elimination one. The companies mostly go for a corporate GD which has to be done professionally. Together with putting forth your own points, you should also respect others viewpoint. A fish market situation only shows your immaturity and unprofessional attitude. The group size in a GD varies from company to company. If the group size exceeds 10 members, the GD is likely to become hot and chaotic. In such GDs the peace makers score more than the rule-breakers. The topics in the GD can be anything under the sun. however if you are abreast with the current business and political scenario you can corroborate your points well. Some companies may give you a list of two or three topics and ask you to discuss one of the. For the selection of the topic the group has to reach a consensus. Remember you are being observed from right now. Some companies like Crompton Greaves, asks you to discuss on any one topic of your own choice. In such a case you should come prepared with a good debatable topic. The group should cohesively come to a consensus on the topic to be debated. Too much rigidity to stick to your topic will reveal your immaturity and portray you as a bad team player. The GD is mainly conducted to judge your communication skills. You are not going to score more if you speak for or against the topic. Your ability to convince the group, the reasons you cite in justification for your points, your ability to lead the team, initiating the GD will help you score more. In some companies like Sterlite the recruiters sit among the students instead of sitting in front of the group. In such a situation please address them as one of the group members, look towards them too. They may be carrying the marking sheets. Please at any point of time do not peep into the sheet. You can conduct a structured GD also. In such GDs you can decide in the beginning the way the GD will take place, i.e. maybe you decide that each one will get a chance to speak and this may be done in clockwise or anticlockwise direction. After the stipulated time of discussion one can wind up the GD by asking concluding remarks from each member. We again say that do not create a fish market because you will all lose in such a situation. Act maturely as if you are in a boardroom. Good points expressed emphatically will do the trick of getting you through this hurdle.

27

Tips for GD 1. Remember, during GDs companies do not look for the best. They are just looking for the better 4-5 candidates in each group. So dont try to be the best just try that you are among the better 4-5 candidates. If all of you try to do the best, you all lose. 2. Take GD as a formal discussion at your workplace. Then, you will automatically start working as a team. 3. Try to initiate the GD. Only one of you in each group can do so. So dont panic over initiation. 4. If you dont understand the topic then listen to the first 2-3 speakers, assimilate and then get into the discussion. 5. Show that you are interested in the GD. 6. Respect others viewpoints. Even if you want to differ dont disrespect others views. 7. Keep a smiling and happy face. No body likes a swollen face. 8. Body language should not be offensive or defensive. Use a calm posture with a firm foothold. 9. use your hands to express yourself but dont overdo it. It should look natural. Never point fingers at anyone. 10. Even if you are dominating continue to respect others and encourage somebody who has been trying to speak. But you will rarely get such a chance. 11. If you can add such points to the discussion which lay the greatest impact on the GD you are a winner. 12. voice modulation is important. You should know when to raise your voice and when to be soft during the GD. You should be expressive. 13. No matter how much you speak but if you are not expressive, if you seem to be disinterested, if you dont make eye contact you cannot succeed. 14. Dont deviate from the topic. If the group has deviated then the one who brings back to the topic gets additional points. 15. Sometimes you will be given a choice between two topics, one topic has to be chosen by the group for discussion. Do this to show maturity of the batch. 16. Keep a few GD topics in mind and make yourself comfortable with it. Sometimes you might be asked to suggest a topic to the group. One topic will then be selected by the group for discussion. 17. If you have been given chest numbers for the GD then wear it in a way that the number is easily visible to all (specially the recruiter). Otherwise if he cannot see your number he might not be able to give scores to you. 18. If you have been given chest numbers for the GD address each other by chest numbers rather than names in the GD. This makes referencing easy for the recruiter (He does not know you by names).

Interviews
The interview is the most feared aspect of the selection procedure. It is the most unexpected part as one can never anticipate the type of questions that will be asked. Companies may go for individual or group interviews. One should be prepared for both. One should not have any kind of notion that manufacturing companies will only test your knowledge of laws and IR. It maybe that they may lay more emphasis on your concept of law but you cannot ignore OB, HRD etc. Some companies like TCS lay emphasis on asking more questions about the candidate, his family and his personal views on some issues. This is mainly done to find out whether the candidate can gel into the companys culture. There are no right or wrong answers to such questions, but try to be positive. Some companies go for stress interviews. The panelists may bombard questions at you or give very negative remarks or make fun of you or try to provoke you to enter into an argument. You have to be calm and cool. If you cruise confidently in such situations, kudos! You have made through. Some companies use the group interview technique. Such interviews may turn to be stressful. You may feel tensed when questions are not addressed to you. Be patient and wait. Sometimes the question is not directed to anyone specifically. In such a case you have to be very alert and prompt in replying first. Try to be innovative as just repeating others answers in a different language may entrap you. If you are clever enough, you can take a chance of turning the tide on your side. While describing yourself lay emphasis on some strengths or achievements of yours which you are confident about. The interviewer will take the bait and ask you questions about what you wanted him to ask. Bravo! The ball is in your court now. Summer project is a very very sensitive area where you can expect loads of questions and maybe your entire interview may revolve around it. You should know about your topic, research methodology, findings, recommendations and everything about the organization thoroughly. Vague answers about the project will show your lack of involvement in it. Another important aspect is your CV. You should know your CV by heart. If the panelists ask you to say your career objective, it should be word-to-word same as in your CV. Other things like your hobbies, areas of interest, achievements etc should be clear. You should have solid reasons to support the tall claims you make in the CV. If you have written any seminars you have attended be very sure to answer questions about the topic what you learnt at the seminar, the speakers, the location etc.

Everything matters in that rendezvous. Your dress, your face, hair, shoes, nails, the lipstick you wear, the rings on your fingers, the perfume you wear, practically everything makes an impact in its own way. Try to look and be well balanced that day. A too casual approach or a too serious frown will spoil the show. A well-groomed person will keep the interviewers interest in him/her. Be very confident and follow the tips and suggestions given to you later for interview and you will definitely triumph.

30

Tips for interview 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Have a cool, calm and soothing persona. Open the door softly and close it behind you. When you say May I come in Sir or Good Morning Sir, you should seem to have loads of energy and enthusiasm. Take your seat. Say Thanks and seat yourself in a comfortable posture. If you have a problem of waving hands a lot during interviews then keep your file on your lap and hold it with your hand. So, now your hand is engaged in some work. 6. Your voice should be such that you seem to be assertive and not arrogant. 7. Be confident. When you have given right answer and you are not confident about it, it as good as a wrong answer. You have nothing to lose even if you are confident for a wrong answer. 8. Remember that the interviewer is a human with a ego. He has come to give you a job, so never hurt his ego. 9. Be modest and not a high flier. 10. Big companies dont want freshers with dreams of bringing about huge changes overnight. There are senior people for this purpose. So be modest and show your zeal to learn. 11. Body language should not be offensive or defensive. 12. Look at all the interviewers in the panel while you answer the questions, giving more importance to the one who has asked the question. 13. Wear spotless ironed clothes. Try to look as good as you can. Your looks make the first impression and the interview follows. 14. Get dressed in formals. 15. A man is known by his shoes. Wear well polished good formal shoes. Ladies should not wear footwear that makes a tak-tak sound. Also do not overdo your make-up. 16. Shabby looks is a good enough reason for an interviewer to reject a candidate. 17. Dont show your desperation for the job. Show that you are genuinely interested. 18. Dont fear stress interviews. The idea of such interviews is to see how well you handle stressful situations and your consistency of thoughts. So be calm, cool and poised in such situations.

Personality Tests
Now a peep into various personality assessment tests as conducted by some companies. Thomas Profiling Thomas Profiling as done by Jindal Stainless Ltd. At Delhi. Thomas International Profiling System (TIPS) is a selection tool used to test/check personal traits/personality of potential candidates. It consists of a single page with approximately 32 rows and 4 columns of personal characteristics. There are four options as Most preferred, Preferred, Not so much preferred and Least Preferred (Sometimes preferred word is replaced by likely). The candidates have to tick against the characters according to the four options, that best describes him. Remember only one tick against each option is allowed). Finally the Profiler (hired by the company) tallies profiles of the candidates with the company profile i.e. traits desired by the company. The closest one gets an upper edge. The success rate of these tests worldwide is 86%. The cost of a single test is around Rs.8000. (Dont worry, it will be free for you). Psychometric Test Psychometric Test as done at Hero Honda Ltd. at KolKata. These tests are done to know how a person will react under some situations. On the first side of the sheet of the test there were around 70 words like loyal, sympathetic etc. and the candidates had to say what was their view about how others perceived them. On the other side of the sheet were the same set of words, but now one had to say how they perceive themselves at work. Once the first side was completed, one could not come back to it. Trick: The main trick to tackle these tests is be yourself and have consistency in your views. Time matters so complete it in the stipulated time. There are no right or wrong answers to this test as it all matters whether you suit the companys profile, so be true. This profiling is what we call LUCK!
