Hello and welcome to Learn French by Podcast. My name
is Hugh Nagle and with me is Amlie Verdier. Bonjour,
Amlie!
Bonjour!
Now, in this lesson, were going to look at how to
accomplish a common task buying a train ticket. Of
course, the vocabulary well use could just as easily apply
to buying an inter-city bus ticket, plane ticket, whatever.
Lets get started with a dialogue

Il me faudrait un billet
This is an example of the invariable
verb falloirin the Conditional mood:
I would need. In place of the red
noun, we can substitute other nouns:
Il me faudrait deux kilos de
pommes.
Remember also:
Il me faut [I need
(Present tense)]
Il me faudra [I will need
(Future tense)]
la ville de Toulouse
The basilica of Saint Sernin, Toulouse.
Toulouse is located in southwest France on the banks of the
Garonne River, mid-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the
Mediterranean Sea. The metropolitan area of la ville roseis
home to about 1.1 million inhabitants. With the headquarters
of Airbus S.A.S. located there, Toulouse has signifcant
aerospace and high-tech industries.
Toulouse has an efcient and extensive bus service, as
well as le VAL(Vhicule Automatique Lger) a modern
metro system.
Toulouse was the home city of Antoine de Saint-Exupry,
author of Le Petit Prince.
In terms of sport, the city is famed for its strong rugby

When we frst arrive at the ticket counter, we need to say
what we want. The key exchange was
Il me faudrait un billet pour Toulouse.
And once again
Il me faudrait un billet pour Toulouse.
If were travelling one way only, then well need
un aller simple
un aller simple
or, both ways, thatll be
un aller-retour
un aller-retour
The person at the counter wondered if the ticket was for
today. She said
Pour aujourdhui?
Pour aujourdhui?
The man said he was travelling on the 17th. But it might
have been tomorrow, in which case he would have said
Non. Cest pour demain.
Cest pour demain.
Or, he could have further qualifed that by saying hed be
travelling in the morning
Cest pour demain matin
Cest pour demain matin
7omorrow afternoon
demain aprs-midi
demain aprs-midi
Note
Vous prfrez ?
Vous dsirez ?
The Present is often used in this kind of situation.
In English, we might fnd the Conditional form:
Would you prefer?, Would you like?
We could answer the question by saying either:
Je prfre[Present], or
Je prfrerais[Conditional]
prfrer [to prefer]
je prfre
tu prfres
il / elle / on prfre
nous prfrons
vous prfrez
ils / elles prfrent

moins de
moins de 25 ans.
Thats under 25 (years), (literally
less than).
More than, on the other hand, is
plus de.
Remember
Vous avez moins de 25 ans ?
[Are you under 25 years?]
Remember that we must use the
verb avoir when talking of ones
age in French.
Il a 15 ans.
Elle aura 18 ans samedi.
Ma soeur a 21 ans.

Or, the day after tomorrow, in which case we would
have
Cest pour aprs-demain.
Cest pour aprs-demain.
The man wanted to traveI as earIy as possibIe. How did
he say that?
Le plus tt possible.
Le plus tt possible.
On the other hand, if we wanted to travel as Iate as
possibIe, we would have
Le plus tard possible.
Le plus tard possible.
tt thats early, and tard thats late.
The woman at the counter said there was a train Ieaving
Paris AusterIitz. She said
Il y a un train au dpart de Paris Austerlitz
Il y a un train au dpart de
She might have put that another way, too, using the verb
partir to leave.
Il y a un train qui part dix-sept heures.
Il y a un train qui part dix-sept heures.
So, lets remember the expression au dpart de, thats
Ieaving or departing from. But lets also be listening
out for the verbs partir to leave and, of course,
arriver to arrive.
She said that the expected arrival of the train was at
4 oclock in the afternoon in Toulouse. That expression
was
arrive prvue 16h
arrive prvue 16h
prvu comes from the verb prvoir to foresee,
or to anticipate. We often hear this verb in the context
of making plans or arrangements and expecting them
to happen according to a schedule. We might say l
expected to arrive at 8 oclock but
Oui. 1ai prvu darriver huit heures mais
1ai prvu darriver huit heures mais
As is often the case, the purchaser of the ticket had to
spell his name. He said, Ill spell it Remind us of how he
said that
Je lpelle
Je lpelle
peIer is the verb to speII and the object pronoun I
Note
le plus tt possible.
Thats as early as possible, (literally,
the earliest possible).
This is an example of a superlative:
we could create other superlatives
biggest, longest, shortest, etc by
replacing the red adjective tt:
le plus grand (que) possible.
le plus long (que) possible.
le plus court (que) possible.
Note
Je lpelle [Present]
In French, we sometimes fnd the
Present used where in English we
might use the Future. (Ill spell it:
Future)
verb
partir [= to leave]
je pars
tu pars
il / elle / on part
nous partons
vous partez
ils / elles partent
past participle: parti
The verb partirrequires the auxiliary
trein the Pass Compose:
Il est parti tt ce matin.
[He left early this morning.]
Note
arrive prvue
The extra eis required on the
adjective prvueto agree with the
feminine noun arrive.

meaning it stands for Ie nom. Once again, he said
Je lpelle
He might also have said lm going to spell it, in other
words, the lmmediate Future
Je vais lpeler
Je vais lpeler
The man said an aisIe seat, rather than one near the
window. That was
un sige ct couloir
un sige ct couloir
Substituting the word le couloir with la fnetre would
give us a window seat. In that case youd say
un sige ct fentre.
un sige ct fentre.
un sige is the general word for a seat. Well also
bump into it in the context of the headquarters of an
organisation, for example. We might hear that
Le sige de lONU est New York.
Le sige de lONU est New York.
Youd better explain that acronym to us, Amlie: lONU,
thats
lOrganisation des nations unies
lOrganisation des nations unies
which, more often than not, we simply refer to as the
UN in English.
Now that weve discussed the key words and expressions
in detail, lets listen one fnal time to the conversation to
consolidate everything.

Je vais lpeler
That is, Im going to spell it.
The verb aller is essential for the
Immediate Future:
aller [to go]
je vais
tu vas
il / elle / on va
nous allons
vous allez
ils / elles vont
We then follow aller with an
infnitive:
Je vais regarder a.
Tu vas y aller?
Il va entrer en contact avec eux.
