Blueprint of a City: Cell Organelle Analogy Grade 8 Science Student Assignment Job opportunity: Cellville wants your help!

Aspiring mayor, E. U. Karyotic is looking for a developer to make sure his new city will be built well enough to be self-sustained. Your task is to design the blueprints for the city of Cellville to make sure it is a success, Mayor E.U. Karyotic and the citizens of Cellville are counting on you. Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to use your own knowledge of cell organelles and their functions to come up with an analogy that represents a city. Each cell organelle has a specific function, relate the function of the cell organelles to function of buildings, infrastructure, or jobs within the city. The Task or Project (24 marks as per rubric) 1. Create a poster of a map of a city, using city buildings, infrastructure, jobs or any other creative representation of animal cell organelles.
2. Provide a title for your cell/city analogy; make sure your title is clearly

organized and that it is visually appealing. Do not forget to include your NAME and the DATE. 3. Animal cell organelles to include: Nucleus: A membrane-bound structure in eukaryotic cells that contains the genetic material and regulates the cells activities (i.e., growth and metabolism). The nucleus is also the control centre that contains the cells genetic material, which directs the production of proteins. Hint: As the control centre, a good starting point could be City Hall. Hope this helps the rest of your analogies. Cell membrane: The protective barrier that controls or regulates the flow of materials in and out of the cell. Cytoplasm: The aqueous material and suspended organelles between the nucleus and cell membrane. Endoplasmic reticulum: A network of membrane covered channels involved in transporting materials within the cell. Golgi body: A structure in the cell that sorts and packs proteins in vesicles. Lysosome: A cell structure that digests and breaks down food

particles, cell wastes, and worn-out cell parts. Mitochondrion: An organelle in eukaryotic cells that converts oxygen and glucose into cellular energy (ATP) carbon dioxide and water. Ribosome: An organelle in eukaryotic cells that builds proteins. Vacuole: A membrane bound sac that stores fluids or other materials. 4. Draw a picture (or cut out pictures from magazines and glue onto poster) of the analogy of the cell organelle and label it. State the cell organelle represented with the function of the organelle. Eg. City Hall is the Nucleus. The nucleus is the control centre of the cell. 5. Also provide your reason or rationale for choosing your representation of the cell organelle. Eg. I chose the city hall to be the nucleus because city hall is responsible for making sure all components of the city do their job. City hall is also responsible for the growth of the city like the nucleus is responsible for genetic material and reproduction. And so on. 6. Be creative when you draw your map and be sure to include all the cell organelles provided, pictures or diagrams, name of city analogy with corresponding cell organelle, state the function of the cell and your reasons for your analogy. 7. Please ask if you need clarifications or you would like to share your analogy. 8. If you would like to modify your project to best suit your learning style, please confirm your plan with me. Things you might modify if you see fit: -build a model instead of creating a poster -submit your rationale as a video or audio file, etc. instead of in writing -choose a factory, business, or the human body, etc. as your representation of the cell instead of a city -other modifications must be approved first; assuming these modifications meet the criteria of the rubric provided, the task, and the purpose of the assignment they will be accepted Suggested Materials (materials are provided, but feel free to bring in your own) -poster paper (11 x 17) -pencil crayons -rulers -magazines to cut pictures from -scissors -markers -craft supplies -use your textbook, course notes, peers or teacher for cell organelle functions Grading Project Due Date: 24 marks
