Questions 29 – 34
Read the speech below and answer the questions that follow.

Good morning, teachers and students. It is a privilege to give a talk on ‘How to

Overcome Shyness’. I hope the shy students will find my talk useful and pick up a few
tips to overcome their shyness.
Research has shown that people are not born shy. Instead, shyness can evolve
from particular experiences we have at home, in school and with our peers. Shyness is
not necessarily a bad trait. In fact, it can make some people more appealing. However,
many people consider it a negative trait. They say it makes it more difficult for them to
meet new people and make new friends. In the extreme, shyness can result in
depression, anxiety and loneliness.
A parent should start early to communicate to a child that he or she is
unconditionally loved. The child should be prevented from experiencing the sense that his
self-worth depends on the approval of others. Shy people should be determined to
change their shyness. They can start by learning skills on how to approach and relate to
other people. They can concentrate on how to handle compliments, start a conversation,
keep it going and terminate it. One of the ways is to greet strangers and build confidence
from there. They have to learn to control their anxiety and imagine desired results rather
than fear situations.
Fellow students, self-esteem can be boosted by a simple formula. Stop saying
negative things about yourself. Instead, think in terms of correcting what you think is
wrong and putting your best foot forward.

29. What was the speaker’s hope?

A The audience would enjoy the talk
B The audience would be more confident
C The audience would learn the way to overcome shyness

30. Shyness is
A an inborn trait
B an acquired trait
C an extremely bad trait

LIFE’S BRIEF CANDLE

To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,

And then is heard no more; it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

That’s it! All his problems are solved. But, wait Jamal! There’s a catch. Look at the
loan repayment scheme, it’s RM 500.00 for the first month and RM 400.00 every

cucumbers with the money left over after the repayments. He cannot imagine his
beautiful wife eating cucumbers everyday. Besides, there might be little Jamals very
soon and he didn’t think they too, could thrive on cucumbers. Jamal said goodbye to
