Application Spotlight Easily Address EtherNet/IP I/O Blocks

As automation gets more and more technical and cost competitive, companies have to work diligently to ensure their maintenance and installation crews are up to date with the latest networking technology. This becomes evident as the switch to ethernet-based networks in manufacturing processes becomes more prevalent. It therefore becomes a requirement that maintenance staff and installation crews have expert knowledge in building and maintaining healthy Ethernet networks. Balluffs EtherNet/IP IP Address Plug (IPAP) and EtherNet/IP blocks with IP67 push button displays were designed with this in mind, eliminating the hassles of installation and complex troubleshooting of an Ethernet network. PS_044 EtherNet/IP I/O Block Network Address Setup 2010-04

Changing out components quickly in an industrial network has always been a challenge in manufacturing. This is especially true for Ethernet networks where there is no longer a simple node address assigned to a device. Instead it requires changing the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address. By using a Balluff IPAP on a Balluff EtherNet/IP Machine Mount I/O Block, the three addresses are conveniently stored in the IPAP. The IPAPs for each block can be pre-programmed at a PC, then simply screwed into the block at installation time, making commissioning quick. If for any reason the block has to be replaced, simply remove the IPAP from the old block and install it on the new block; during power-up the new block will receive all three addresses from the IPAP, with no further programming needed. A security strap on the IPAP ensures that the IPAP will remain with the attached Ethernet cordset not the damaged block.

Before most Ethernet network devices can be installed in an industrial network application, an engineer must first program each device with the proper IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address. Most IT departments have rigid rules on what LANs can be used in their industrial environments. This requires the ability to program all four octets of an address. It can also be a struggle to keep the devices straight and ensure the proper IP address is installed in the proper physical location. By using a Balluff I/O block with push button display, all four octets of the IP address, subnet mask and gateway address can be programmed right at the installation point. A full range of addresses can then be used and ensures the correct address is assigned to the right block. The block can be removed directly from its packaging, physically installed, powered and programmed in a matter of minutes. If necessary, the display can also be locked out at the controller to prevent tampering.
