THE SERVICE LEARNING REFLECTION FRAMEWORK

The Service Learning Project follows the APPLE model A = Analyze P/P=Prepare and plan L= Lead E= Evaluate

A) Analysis of Needs. This portion has been done by both teachers at CTSS and trainers from AKLTG. B) Preparation and Planning- The preparation of the project has been done by the organization of resources and by finalizing the exact details of what is to be done during the process of the Service itself. C) Lead. In Lead, participants go on to organize the project and will be taught that leading a project requires them to model the way, be proactive and flexible and align themselves to the purpose of the project. Before the project, facilitators will lead the groups in framing the participants in the right way. They will have to answer the following questions in their booklet firstA) Goal and Objective Setting B) How do I know I have succeeded? C) Why am I here? D) What difference do I want to make D) Evaluate. In the post-evaluation and after action review and post-activity reflection will be conducted. In Part 1 of the process, teams will be given a flip chart which has two columns that is titled Gems and Opportunities. They will have to fill out what they taught went well, the positives from the experience under Gems and they will have to write down the things that could be improved from the project under the column Opportunities. After that, there will be pieces of flip chart paper hung on the wall. On each piece of paper is a question that each participant will have

to answer. Each participant will be given a post-it note to write their answers in and will then have to post it up on the respective flipchart papers. The questions are as follows : 1) Did I achieve my goals? 2) How do I feel about it ? 3) What was the most valuable thing you have learnt about your project? Why was it valuable? 4) What did you learn from the people you connected with in this project? What have they learnt from you? 5) How do you think differently about your class after this project? 6) What did you learn about this project that you can apply to your life? After they have completed the activity, they will be given time to walk around and take notice of what their friends have written. The final segment will be a facilitated debrief that will be done by the coaches where participants share their feelings, emotions, thoughts and lessons they have learnt with one another. The facilitator will follow the following framework:

Experience Refers to the conduct of the service itself, taking stock of the whole process. Describe

This is where the facilitator will give his or her observations and ask the question , Did you notice? Interpret This is where the facilitator prods the group to seek meaning, purpose and rationale and ask the question Why do you think that happened? as well as How did you feel about it? Generalize This is where the facilitator seeks to empower and internalize the learning by asking the question Does this happen in your life, and Why The facilitator will help the participants to make sense of the experience by connecting and linking the experience to situations in everyday life. This is where the facilitator will share a piece of himself or herself by sharing his or her own reflections in the process of the service learning. Apply This is where the facilitator helps the participants to summarize the learning and asks the question How can you apply this to your life? or Has what you learnt inspired you to make a change in your life> and How?
