Covering letter - teaching assistant

My love of children was founded when I started to babysit throughout my GCSE’s.


This was the main reason why I chose to study psychology at university because
within the Psychology degree not only do I study social interaction and biological
understandings of people, but a whole module is directed around developmental
psychology. This governs how children develop from as young as 3 months to
adolescence. I have a very caring and fun loving personality, which I think is perfect
if one wants to work with children. I learn quickly and interact with others very easily,
building personal and formal relationships with both adults – other teachers, and
children – the students.
My biggest passion is art and creative subjects, shown through my a-levels, my art
scholarship and history of art, but I also have scientific interests shown from studying
triple science at GCSE level and geography for a-level. These interests will aid my
assistance in teaching, especially my imaginative and creative personality. All
together, I think I am a well-rounded student who has a lot to offer a school as an
assistant teacher.
My interest in child development and how they socially interact inspired me to
prepare lesson plans and teach at ‘The holy family’ primary school once a week for a
year. This instigated further work with children. Last summer I applied for an
assistant role in Runneymede’s child play scheme. Due to there not being enough
children taking part in the scheme I could not actually gain this position, but after
preparing a day’s activities for the children to explain in my interview, (I even made a
hand made kite) I was awarded an instructor role, whereby I would have been given
ten to twelve children to look after and co-ordinate in summer activities. The
disappointment of not being able to obtain this summer experience, pushed me further
to apply for being a teaching assistant.
From studying psychology, it has given me such insight to actually putting these skills
to physical practice, and from knowing I want to work with children when I am older,
I can not think of anything more appropriate than being a teaching assistant. My
passion for children and understanding their learning processes is something that has
always fascinated me, and I believe my aspirations, natural interest in children,
enthusiasm and personal qualities s demonstrated through my extra curricular
activities are attributes that a school would welcome in a teaching assistant.
