Dr. Joe Rodriguez Harlingen High School South

Student of the Month Homecoming HCISD College Night

Hello and welcome to a brand new school year. I am honored to return to Harlingen High School South and assist in raising standards for our students. Continuing the tradition of South excellence both in and out of the classroom will be the standard we expect to uphold and improve on this year. Based on many discussions and observations, I know that everyone at South is committed to providing a world class education and a safe learning environment for our students. Last year we met some important goals. I want to applaud our hard working students, excellent teaching and support staff, and of course our parents for results. The foundation that was created is a true testament to the focus everyone has for making our students competitors in todays world. As with all school years, this year we have some challenges to undertake. First and foremost, the focus will be on achieving high standards of success in academics and extracurricular activities, while understanding that we also have a responsibility to ensure our students are taught the life skills needed to function in an ever-changing society. I believe that every South community member will do all that is required to make sure students are our first priority and that every decision focuses on high levels of achievement. I want to invite anyone and everyone to stop by to discuss any concerns that they feel need to be addressed. I believe that, by working as a team and addressing the issues, we can not only be a step above, but we can move a step beyond.

PTSA GENERAL MEETING and OPEN HOUSE

Tuesday, September 6, 2011 Harlingen HS South Cafeteria 6:00 pm

Message from our President Judi Peters HHSS PTSA

On behalf of the entire PTSA board, I would like to say Welcome back! to our fabulous Hawk Teachers, Staff, Parents and Students and extend an extra-special welcome to our incoming freshmen and upper classmen that may be new to our campus. Upon entering the halls of HHSS this year, excitement is evident. Our PTSA board is excited, too. This is going to be a great year! We invite all parents and students as well as family and community members, to join our organization. School involvement is a proven way to ensure your child succeeds. By becoming a member of PTSA, you are sending an important message to your child - one that says you care about them in the present and in the future, and that you value education. Membership is only $6.50 per person and the benefits are numerous. We have many opportunities to volunteer and invite you to fill out a volunteer form at our Open House scheduled on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 in the HHSS cafeteria. Or, you may contact our volunteer chairperson, Debra Bennett by emailing AtHomeDebra@aol.com Even if you are not able to volunteer your time, your membership will help our organization with our fundraising efforts which ultimately benefit our staff and students. Since we value our HHSS teachers and staff, our Hospitality Committee provides many perks for our teachers. We work with the administration to enhance the look of our school through our Beautification Committee. We host the Masquerade Ball and Graduation Celebration for our students. We recognize two Students of the Month each month during the academic school year as well as offer student scholarships. PTSA encourages and offers many opportunities for community service including work with the Humane Society, Sunny Glenn Childrens home and our Christmas Angel Tree. The first student meeting will be Wednesday, September 7 during both lunch periods (room to be announced). Our first fundraiser will be our annual BBQ Tailgate on Friday, October 7. We invite you to purchase tickets at Open House or contact our Fundraising Chair, Alayne Villarreal by emailing alaynevilla@yahoo.com . Then, join us for the BBQ before heading over to Boggus Stadium to support our amazing South Hawk football team. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your 2011-12 HHSS PTSA President. I look forward to seeing you all at our Open House on September 6, 2011 beginning at 6:00 pm. We will have a short general meeting followed by a NEW way of visiting your childrens teachers and classrooms. See you there!!!

Student Meeting Announcement Caitlin Peters, Student President First HHSS PTSA Student Meeting will be on: Wednesday, September 7, 2011 Both Lunches Room TBA We will be voting for Homecoming Representatives. Pizza will be served. Anyone interested in joining is welcome. Please make a list of the activities you would like our student organization to do this year and bring it with you to the meeting.

PTSA MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

Harlingen High School South PTSA has been very busy conducting its annual membership drive. Our first event of the year took place August 8th 12th where parent and student volunteers manned the PTSA booth signing up new members at registration. Many thanks to all the volunteers. If you have not already joined PTSA there will be another opportunity to join at the Open House and General Meeting on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. There will be a registration table at the front door of the cafetorium where you can join. As a member, you will receive four newsletters throughout the year keeping you up-todate with the school calendar, activities and other important information. PTSA members are also eligible for discounts at national retail chains. We hope you will join us and help support Masquerade, Graduation Celebration, Student of the Month, our scholarship program for graduating seniors and teachers, and our many other worthwhile projects. Thanks so much to all our volunteers for helping with the drive and for the continued support of Harlingen High School South PTSA!
