INDONESIA: DEFORESTATION AND CARBON CREDITS

http://carboncentralnetwork.com/
Indonesia, like so many tropical nations, struggles to compete in the contemporary world. The nations greatest resource is it tropical rainforests, which can be utilised for many economic purposes, and its deforestation is a result of global economic competition. All over the world, rainforests are cleared for agricultural and grazing lands. The exotic and commercial-grade timber from the clearance is a high-value cash commodity. THE IMPORTANCE OF RAINFORESTS Environmental organisations recognise and promote the importance and value of conserving and preserving rainforests. The enormous mass of living plants in the rainforests function as massive sponge to absorb greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, from the atmosphere. Scientists have stated that greenhouse gases may contribute to global warming, which may cause climate change resulting in ecosystem and environmental damage. Many environmental organisations, industries, and nations recognise the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles, residencies, and work places. Efforts are being made to make these changes. But, these changes do not address the excess greenhouse gases currently in the atmosphere. A solution answer lies within carbon offset credits.

CARBON OFFSETS CREDITS Carbon offset credits are an economic method of neutralising

greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. One carbon credit is equal to one tonne (metric ton) of carbon dioxide or equivalent greenhouse gas. Anyone can purchase carbon credits to offset their carbon emissions. Individuals can purchase carbon credits to promote a green lifestyle. Industries purchase carbon credits to promote conscientious business practices, environmental awareness, and reduce tropical rainforest deforestation and ecosystem destruction. DEFORESTATION IN INDONESIA Illegal loggers have exploited Indonesian rainforests for decades. Legally approved palm oil plantations, also require the removal of native rainforest growth. As a result, legal and illegal deforestation is rampant and native forests are being lost. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation procedures (REDD) is a United Nations program to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions from deforestation and degradation. Wealthy nations provide financial support for developing nations to promote woodland preservation. In 2010, Indonesia was the first nation to set the framework for REDD. At that time, some international banking investors provided financial support for the program. The intention of the REDD program is to reward Indonesia for rainforest protection.

RAINFOREST STEWARDSHIP When individuals, organisations, industries, and investors buy carbon credits, they are not buying property, they are becoming rainforest stewards to reduce or prevent deforestation. Their investments, no matter how small or large, contribute to the grand plan of protecting the rainforests, the environment, and being responsible citizens of the planet.
