Since his last encounter of a prickly kind The Jet has not had the opportunity to demonstrate whether he actually learned a lesson. We did go for a walk the other day and noticed a large porcupine hanging out under the same apple tree, but The Jet didnt notice in his rush to get out to the woods. I can see a conflict arising in the future, though, as the supply of apples on the ground starts to dwindle. You see The Jet loves his apples. After having a large meal the other night, I needed to have a quick walk just to ease that over-stuffed feeling of an all you can eat buffet. Surrounding our house and along the driveway, there are at least five or six apple trees that he is very familiar with. So as we walked The Jet enjoyed his very own version of an all you can eat buffet!!! Three circuits of the driveway and six or so apples later, The Jet has had a great time!! In other news, work on my woods road is proceeding faster than I expected, but it is fairly crude with lots of alders, stumps and other debris along the route. My main objective is to just get the road through and worry about the fixing up later. I am afraid, however, that the fixing up could be a three year to life sentence. As I have been working on the road, I have also been thinking!! Strange I know, but it sometimes happens. It is generally agreed that the City of Saint John has a few issues with their own roads that need to be fixed. The solution, however, will likely run into the millions of dollars!! But, I may have a much cheaper solution!! You see, in order to have happy residents, it is important to manage expectations. So for a measly $10 per resident, I am willing to give Saint John residents a ride on my very own version of Chesley Drive (including a crossing of our famous bridge). A simple 15 or 20 minute journey will quickly reset forever, their whole notion of what a bad road looks like. The City will save millions and the $680,000 in trip fees will allow me the time, material and equipment needed to nicely finish my road!! A win-win situation if I ever saw one!! For the visitors from the West Side to my road adventure, I was hoping to recreate Simms Corner, but Ill be darned if I can figure out how to construct such a convolution. But us West Siders know that Simms Corner was designed to keep out the foreigners and the less than courageous; and it has worked darn well for many decades!! 800

In recent weeks, my coverage of the multitude of successful Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership fundraisers has overshadowed another very important event that has taken place. In a letter from Mr Sam Mncina, Principal at Piggs Peak Central High School, we were told that on July 1st the school opened their new latrines for use by the students. This is very exciting news! Many of you will remember John Lovett telling us of the situation that existed at the school about a year ago. Almost three hundred school girls have just two very unsanitary pit toilets for which they must line up to use at break time. Furthermore there are no facilities for washing their hands after using the toilet, so they go to lunch or home economics class with a very good chance of spreading disease. The other side of this is that it does little to enhance their self-esteem in suffering the indignity of lining up in public view to use these inadequate facilities, especially in a country where females are considered second class citizens. So providing these toilet facilities will perhaps be just one small way to empower them. The gender inequality that John describes has been recognized as one of the key reasons for the proliferation of HIV in Swaziland and other African countries. According to the AIDS Epidemic Update 2004 (UNAIDS, WHO), Increasingly, HIV/AIDS is striking women. Today, more than 20 years into the epidemic, women account for nearly half the 33 million people living with HIV worldwide. In sub-Saharan Africa, 76 per cent of the young people living with HIV are female. In typical fashion, the people of Hampton responded to this inherent injustice! We are, after all, the home of John Peters Humphrey whom Nelson Mandela described as the father of the modern human rights system. Through a fundraising dinner for women last November combined with individual donations from generous Hamptonians, the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership raised enough funds to rectify the problem. Under the supervision of John Lovett, without whom construction would have been almost impossible, we built a modern new facility for both males and females. John tells us everything has turned out well and the head teacher and school committee seem to be pleased with the result. In fact, in Mr Mncinas letter, he describes them as special toilets, adding may the Lord God keep and make grow such a good relationship between our two organizations. Thank you a thousand times. We can all be proud of the good work we are doing in accomplishing our mission to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS in Piggs Peak. There are a number of other projects on the table we would like to pursue. We hope, with your continued support, we will be able to do so. You can check out whats being done there through the HamptonPiggs Peak Partnership at www.hamptonpiggspeak.ca. 110

Hampton High School played their first football game on September 9th against Simonds and won 49 to 19. Dan Brown lead the scoring with four touchdowns, Trevor Floyd scored two TDs and Cody Greer chipped in with one as well. Mike Bettle kicked seven converts. Nic McInnes sacked the opposing QB several times right off the start which gave the Huskies the winning spirit. Dustin Arsenault, a defensive linebacker, filled in for our injured QB and threw a beautiful 30 yard pass to Marcus Perry as well as many tight passes to execute plays for most of the game then switched off to Tommy Woods for the last few minutes just in time to tackle Simonds fastest player in two attempts at a touchdown. Jeff Moorcroft was another defensive player who was able to catch/tackle their #17. Jade Trent Richards intercepted two passes plus made several great tackles to help the teams defense. Other tackles that stopped the opposition from scoring were done by Matt Pothier (whose blocking tackle was heard by most of the crowd), Mark Hickey, Kieran Tompkins and Colt Lanteigne to name a few. The entire offensive linemen were the heroes that enabled the team to score. Tyler Hodgin had to be convinced to step out of the game after having his jaw dislocated during a tackle, Devin Henry didnt get to play the second half after an ankle injury and Zach Guimond watched from the sidelines due to an injury at practice. This didnt put a damper on the teams spirit; they were enthusiastic and uplifting. Martin Gallant was one of the many players offering high fives to players as they switched from offense to defense. Their sportsmanship was evident throughout the night. For a complete team list and game schedule, check out the HHS or the NBIAA website and be sure to come out and watch this amazing team of athletes! 124 A Launch Party for the Anglican Parish of Upham Cookbook will be held on Thursday, September 22nd from 7:00-9:00pm at the Holy Trinity Church Hall in Smithtown. Stewarton United Church truly is a magnificent building looking very pristine amidst the trees and blueberry fields that surround it. The Church recently had its roof and outside front sides and walls painted, windows repaired, signs refreshed and a newly painted green door which will match the inserts in the steeple in the future. The work was made possible by generous donations to Stewarton by generous people and we thank you. The work was completed by Jack and Nicholas Desruisseau of East Scotch Settlement. The structure of the church is next on our list, in maintaining this 145 year old church, with plans to start hopefully this fall. We invite everyone to come to our Lamplight Service on Sunday, October 2nd at 7:00pm with special music by Marie Short and Herb Isbill. After worship we will share stories and memories and enjoy a shared lunch. The Hampton Communities in Bloom Committee felt that it was important to recognize the Hampton businesses that have taken that extra step to show their community pride. The resulting Looking Good is Good for Business Awards recognized some of those businesses; but there were many more businesses that have made that extra effort to show residents and visitors alike their pride of place and we salute them. Our Most Improved Business award went to the newly renovated and landscaped Hovey Insurance and Financial Services. Seeing is believing. The Most Tidy Business was awarded to the Hampton Pharmasave but to be honest they could have been awarded any number of awards! The same can be said for the Lutz, Longstaff, Parrish who were awarded Best Bloomin Business. Zeldas River Adventures was awarded the Most Environmentally Friendly Business Award; her participation in the Great Canadian Shore Line Clean up each year among other initiatives didnt go unnoticed. The Best Flower Garden award was presented to the Hampton Tim Hortons. Their property is as neat as a pin. We couldnt find even one weed in their flower beds and certainly no litter. We want our businesses to know that Communities in Bloom notices their efforts but more importantly, so do their customers. Looking good, really is good for business. 116 The next monthly meeting of the KNS will be held on Monday, September 26th at 7:30pm, upstairs in the St Pauls United Church (Morrison Drive, Sussex). Over the summer our Australian Exchange student, Joe Roy, had a fantastic experience of travelling across the country as part of the Cross Canada Tour organized for Rotary exchange students, primarily those who have been placed in Eastern Canada. The tour goes literally from the east to the west coast, stopping at some of the great places in Canada along the way. What must if be like to be part of the crowd on Parliament Hill for Canada Day celebrations? One of the chaperones for part of the trip was our own Rotary Club member, Virginia Stites. Thanks Virginia for giving up time and energy to help make this a memorable trip for the over 40 participants. In early July our 2010-2011 exchange student, Will MacMackin, returned from a year in Berlin. At our last meeting Will gave a presentation on his experience. We understand from his siblings that he has a great command of the German language. In August, Bailie Tompkins left as our 201112 outbound student to a location further north in Germany, not far from the city of Hamburg. The Rotary Club of Hampton is gearing up for a busy and worthwhile fall season. One of our first small projects has been to inspect and then organize some work in Spooner Island Park which suffered damage as a result of Hurricane Irene. Limbs, the top of a large tree and some whole trees had come down so clean up of these things had to be for safety reasons. At our August 29th meeting we hosted the three winners of the clubs three bursaries. Accompanied by their parents they were: Geena Sipkema, Bellisle High graduate who will study nursing at UNB, Karmen Magarvey, Hampton High. graduate who will study for a B.A. at St. Thomas U and Kenton Folkins, also a Hampton High. grad who will be attending NBCC in Saint John and studying Mechanical Engineering in the fall. Ivan and his crew have been busy providing bar services for a variety of events at the Hampton Seniors Resource Centre. Thank you, Ivan and your volunteers. Ahead of us is the Thane Dunn concert which is sure to be a crowd pleaser on Saturday, September 24th. There are some tickets left so contact any Rotarian or call the Barnsteads, John and Rosemary at 832-5884. Cost is $35. Funds raised will go to Rotary projects in the community and beyond. Preparations are underway for the Annual Used Book Sale. Leave your donations at Floyds Store or if you need assistance with a large quantity please call Keith at 832-5383. The sale takes place the weekend after Thanksgiving friday, october 14th (5:00-9:00pm) and Saturday, october15 (9:00am-1:00pm). Submitted by Beverley Lyons on behalf of Keith Lyons, PR Committee member. 108 County of Kings East Orange Lodge Association will be holding their annual Church Service at the Lower Millstream Baptist Church on Sunday, october 9th at 2:00pm. A lunch provided by the Orange Lodge will follow the service. The County of Kings East Orange Lodge Association will be meeting in Waterford on Thursday, october 22nd at 3:00pm. Les Scribner, in the chair, for the Nauwigewauk Darlings Seniors opened the regular meeting, with O Canada and The Lords Prayer. Regular Meeting was then adjourned and followed by the Annual Meeting. The various committee chairs are to have their written reports to Judy Hill, secretary, who will forward them to the Community Club for their Annual Meeting. Hearing reports gave us a good insight to all that was accomplished and/ or initiated during the year. Birthdays during September Judy Hill and Donna Cameron. Note: A moment of silence was observed at the August meeting in loving memory of the late Jane OBrien who had recently and suddenly passed away. Submitted by Judith Moore. 105 Come out and enjoy 2011 on the water - check out Fundy Paddlers Club at fundypaddlersclubinc.com. Training, tripping and meetings with fellow paddlers. tHereS an app for tHat

I must confess I am a cell phone dinosaur. I am not the last hold out who doesnt own a cell (that will likely be Michael), but all I want is a phone that is a phone and only a phone. My current model is several years old and does me just fine. I expect it can take pictures, but I have no idea how nor do I care to learn. If I want to take photos I will use my camera. It may or may not play music. It may or may not function as a GPS. There are likely a number of unexplored features and cool things it can do, but I have no inclination to discover them. The main selling feature to me is that when I go to enter a phone number (no I dont have any numbers stored in it, I either know the number or I look it up in (gasp) the phone book) the numbers on the display are BIG! I can see them without my glasses. Perfect! At the same time my daughters love to share all the cool things that newer phones can do. It seems there is an app for virtually anything you can imagine, and many that would never have crossed your mind. The Apple website claims 425,000 for just their version of the smart phone. Heard a tune you cant remember the name of . . . theres an app for that. Want to know what furry critter left behind that track in your ravaged garden . . . theres an app for that. Wish you could get that $200 back you leant Uncle Joe but the only way you will get paid is if you could get a credit card payment from him . . . theres an app for that. Flashlight died and its DARK OUT THERE . . . theres an app for that. The party is hopping and you forgot your guitar . . . theres an app for that. Want to check on the status of your flight . . . theres an app for that. Misplaced your Mercedes-Benz in the parking lot . . . theres an app for that. Golfing and want to know the distance to the next hole . . . theres an app for that. Some of this stuff really is pretty cool. But as for me, I am happy with having a phone that is a phone. So I got home, and the phone was ringing. I picked it up, and said Whos speaking please? And a voice said You are. ~ Tim Vine.
