Purpose:Toidentify,communicateandmonitorprogressonkeyprioritiesfortheyearthatadvancethestrategicplan. Process:Establishclearexpectations,keepitassimpleaspossible,andrefertoitoften,usingitasthebasisfor conversationsonstrategy,accountabilities,agreements,celebrations,etc. Creating:Managementdevelopsaplanannually,usuallycoincidingwiththefiscalyear,whichidentifiesthetop(no morethan20)objectivestobepursuedtoadvancethestrategicplan. o Requiresdisciplinetolimitobjectivestothosethataremostessential. o Helpfultoask:Ifwedonothingelsethisyear,whatismostessentialtoadvancethestrategicplan? o Thelimitednumberincreasesfocusandpreventsprogressreportingfrombecomingonerous. Progressreporting: o Format:Keepprogressreportbrief(phrasesvs.sentences;tangibleprogressvs.process,etc.),relevantand currentsothattheperiodicprogressreportiseasilyreviewedandremainsfresh.Makeitaccessible electronicallysoprogresscanbeenteredintoamasterdocument. o Roles/responsibilities:EstablishAOPcoordinator(e.g.aleadersexecutiveassistant)who:establishesand remindsLeadsoftimetableforprogressreports,andfinalizesanddistributesthefullprogressreport. o Timetable:Determinewhenprogressreportisneeded(e.g.tobeincludedinperiodicBoardmeetingmailing &/orevery2monthreviewbymanagementmeeting,etc.)andworkbackprovidingadequatetimefor: Leadstoenterprogressinmasterdocument(23daysissufficientifdatesareestablishedinadvance) AOPcoordinatortofinalizeformatting,etc; Adesignatedleadertoreviewentireprogressreportanddiscussanychangesneeded;and Finaldistribution(hardcopyorelectronic). Distribution:Shareprogressreportwithmanagementteam,atleast.Asaroutinepartofpremeetingmailingto BoardofDirectors,itcaneliminateneedforroutineverbalupdatesandenabletimeforricherconversationatBoard meetings.Canalsobesharedwithstaff,asis,orinabbreviatedform.
