About RetroBSD: A Port of BSD Unix to a Microchip PIC32 Microcontroller

About RetroBSD: A Port of BSD Unix to a Microchip PIC32 Microcontroller
By Serge Vakulenko I started this work a year ago as a hobby project. Now I can demonstrate a demo, running real Unix on a tiny development board. The project is hosted on Google Code: http://code.google.com/p/ retrobsd/. The system is targeted to a market of small embedded systems. Main features include: y Small resource requirements: RetroBSD requires only 128 kbytes of RAM to be up and running user applications y Memory protection: Using hardware mechanisms, kernel memory is fully protected from the user application y Open functionality: Usually, a user application is fixed in Flash memory, but in the case of RetroBSD, any number of applications could be placed into the SD card, and run as required y Real multitasking: Standard POSIX API is implemented (fork, exec, wait4 etc) y Development system on-board: It is possible to have a C compiler in the system, and to recompile the user application (or the whole operating system) when needed RetroBSD is based on 2.11BSD: the last in the series of Berkeley Unixes for the PDP-11 architecture. I ported the kernel, C library and a set of basic utilities to the MIPS32 architecture, using GCC/Linux as a development environment. I also created a PIC32 simulator based on the Virtual MIPS opensource project (http://code.google.com/p/ virtualmips/). There exists a similar system named uCLinux that is widely used for similar purposes. But uCLinux requires ten times more RAM than RetroBSD. It also has a limited multitasking capability (no fork), no memory protection and no C compiler on-board. I believe that RetroBSD could be quite popular for small embedded systems. For example, its possible to make something like a Unix stamp, as opposed to the widely known Basic stamp.

New Motor Control Kit Offers Advanced BLDC Control

Advanced motor control has traditionally required expensive development tools, equipment, and silicon to control the motor. Microchips new Motor Control Starter Kit (MCSK) coupled with the new low cost dsPIC33FJ16 family is changing all of that. The MCSK offers a simple, low cost tool to learning sensorless brushless DC (BLDC) motor control techniques. BLDC motors eliminate the brushes of a traditional DC motor to achieve much higher reliability and long life. In a simple brushed DC motor, the brushes make contact with the rotor. Eventually the brushes wear out and have to be replaced. A brushless DC motor eliminates the brushes and is electrically commutated by a controller. BLDC motors have three phases (or windings) that are energized in a specific pattern in order to spin the rotor. (see diagram) The controller must change which phases are energized (and hence commutate) when the rotor reaches specific points in its rotation, so the controller must always know the rotors position. Typically a BLDC system uses sensors to detect the position of the rotor. However, these sensors introduce a point of failure to the system and also add costs for cabling and sensors. A more advanced BLDC system uses feedback from the windings to calculate the position of the rotor and eliminates the sensors, cutting costs and improving reliability. While this sensorless technique isnt new, it can be difficult to understand and tricky to implement. Enter the new Motor Control Starter Kit (MCSK) from Microchip. The inexpensive kit includes everything needed to learn sensorless BLDC motor control from the ground up. Fully supported by Microchips MPLAB IDE, the MCSK comes with everything on the board: an ultra low cost dsPIC33F controller, USB programming and debugging, a BLDC motor right on the board, and lots of test points to probe signals. It even has an mTouch slider for controlling the motors speed. Source code is available for free. Finally the board includes complete hardware documentation, including schematics and bill of materials and is a great starting point for learning BLDC hardware design. Available from Microchip Direct, the Motor Control Starter Kit is truly the easiest and least expensive way to learn sensorless BLDC motor control.

Know more about Microchips Motor Control Starter Kit with mTouch Sensing
The Motor Control Starter Kit with mTouch Sensing Solutions is a complete hardware and software tool suite for evaluating Microchips ultra-low cost Motor Control Family dsPIC DSCs. It provides a ready to use application that demonstrates integration of a noise sensitive mTouch application within a standard Motor Control environment. It contains a single board with a BLDC motor, capacitive-touch sliders and a built-in debugger. The figure below shows an overview of the starter kit schematic which is based on the dsPIC33FJ16MC102 DSC. The starter kit is preprogrammed with an application featuring integrated motor control and mTouch functionality. windings. The dsPIC33FJ16MC102 DSC features three analog comparators. One internal comparator is used to trigger the Fault function of the PWM module if an overcurrent condition occurs. The advantage of the internal comparator is that different software thresholds can be used to implement overcurrent conditions on different motors. The demonstration application accepts user inputs from two sources: the capacitive slider, and the push button. The devices CTMU module works together with the A/D Converter to sample and convert both the channels of the capacitive slider. Three user LEDs are also available for various display combinations. Integrating Motor Control environment with mTouch application The dsPIC33FJ16MC102 DSC runs at a maximum of 16 MHz, and has sufficient resources to run the Motor Control Starter Kit demonstration application, including the motor control and the mTouch features. Capacitive touch applications require a noise free environment, which is not the case of motor control applications where MOSFETs turn on and off continuously, generating noise spikes on the power supply levels. In such an environment, it is important to take the capacitive slider measurements at a time when no MOSFETs are switching. This is achieved by reducing the capacitance charging time to a minimum, by increasing the charging current, and synchronizing it to the PWM cycle. The ADC module of the dsPIC33FJ16MC102 DSC allows simultaneous sampling of four different analog channels. Because three channels are needed for the BEMF feedback from the motors phases, one channel remains available for the CTMU module. Both of the sliders channels are sampled and converted alternatively on subsequent PWM cycles. The CTMU module uses a trigger to start and stop charging of the sliders capacitors. The trigger is configured in such a way that the ADC starts conversion a few nanoseconds after the capacitor has stopped charging. This ensures that no PWM switching occurs while sampling the voltage on the capacitor. However, avoiding the PWM switching events in the charging period is also important. This is easily achieved in this configuration since the duty cycle is usually much larger than the capacitor charging time. After the ADC completes converting all four channels, three BEMF signals and one of the capacitors, the ADC interrupt is triggered and the capacitor is discharged to allow charging another one in the next cycle. The motor control application with mTouch on this starter kit is based on the application notes AN1160-Sensorless BLDC Control with Back-EMF Filtering Using a Majority Function and AN1250 Microchip CTMU for Capacitive Touch Applications

The PWM module features three complementary output pairs, hardware Fault shutdown, programmable dead time, among others. A standard 3-phase inverter is used to interface the device and the motor. Three ADC channels provide information of the motors BEMF by reading the voltage on the motor

For information on scheduling custom in-house training, contact your local RTC directly or visit the Microchip RTC web site: www.microchip.com/RTC

In tough economic times, companies often look for ways to trim expenses as a means to cope with a downturn in sales. One of the areas often targeted for cutbacks is employee training. There is not only the direct cost of the training to contend with, but also travel expenses and time an employee spends away from the job. During this challenging business climate, however, competitive pressures and technology changes dont stop and it is training that can help a company be better positioned to take advantage of the potential upswing. Microchip, with its global network of Regional Training Centers (RTCs) and third-party training partners, is here to help companies stay competitive with cost-effective, local training. To help companies deal with issues of travel expense and time, classes are given not only in Microchips facilities, but are also taken on the road. Customized customer premise sessions can be scheduled offering the most convenience. Time away can be managed more efficiently with the flexibility of half or full day class sessions. To be effective in teaching, instruction must take into account the needs and expertise level of the attendee. Microchips Regional Training Center classes are developed to provide a coordinated flow, enabling engineers to implement a solution to their product development needs. Instruction is developed and presented in product, technology and implementation classes that are grouped into application based curriculum. Each curriculum flow enables the individual to engage with the training at a level that meets his or her current knowledge and needs. The intent is to provide
