Police dogs are a huge asset to the police service. Not only do they help to deter criminals and safeguard the public they also offer an amazing sense of smell. A dogs nose is many, many times more sensitive than a humans and so is ideal for tracking or detecting, whether it be criminals, bombs, stolen property or people who have lost their way. The canine sense of smell is so finely turned that you can train to detect a number of different substances. Through intensive training both the police dog handler and the dog itself learn a series of commands and hard signals to determine a particular behaviour. Becoming a police dog handler is a big commitment often involves the dog living with the handler and taking full responsibility for the well being of the dog. Pcso Pcso`s are helping to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour. They are making people feel safer in their community and closing the gap between crime and the fear of crime. As a police community support officer (pcso), you will work on the frontline of your local force, providing a visible and reassuring presence on the streets and tackling the menace of anti social behaviour the role of the pcso is typically a full time position and is similar to the role of police officer in that it is based on a shift working pattern. However, the job is also a flexible one and personal and individual circumstances can be taken into account when determining the weekly schedule

The position of a pcso can be a long term career with the police and many applicants see it as a stepping stone to becoming a police officer. While it is true that many pcso`s do go on to become police officers the progression is not guaranteed you still need to apply for this position.
